Royal Troon showed its teeth and while it proved too much for Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Bryson DeChambeau, Xander Schauffele showed why he's now a real major force as he powered away on Sunday to claim his second major of the season.

A tough one to take for Justin Rose, and also for Shane Lowry, but they'll both be back next year at Royal Portrush, where Lowry triumphed in 2019 of course.

So a huge thanks to everyone who joined us over the last four days - remember to check out Peter Scrivener's brilliant report from Royal Troon, watch highlights on BBC Two from 20:00 BST, and most importantly join us next year from Royal Portrush!

Earlier this year, Xander Schauffele celebrated winning the PGA Championship by putting his dogs Momo and Chewie inside the Wanamaker Trophy, but will not be doing the same with the Claret Jug.

"This trophy is a bit too small," Schauffele told Sky Sports.

"They'll probably stay clear of this one!"

    BBC Radio 5 Live

More from Xander Schauffele, who was asked whether his US PGA win in May helped him today:

"A lot. I think the sense of calm coming over me on this back nine, I knew there were hard holes and I knew it was going to be be difficult.

"I played that back nine yesterday in really bad weather so I just told myself today is technically easier so go out and get it.

"To have two of them [majors] is unbelievable. It took me so long to get one and it gets in your head a little bit, and now I'm just spoiling myself."

  8. 'The wind, the rain, you name it, I enjoy it'published at 19:21 British Summer Time 21 July

    Schauffele wins The Open

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Open champion Xander Schauffele, speaking to Iain Carter:

"It's hard to explain. As a kid you dream of it. I tried to force myself to dream of it as of late. It's surreal. It is a dream come true.

"It's always a special trip coming over here. Growing up in the States, it's a privilege to travel playing golf.

"It's something I always look forward to. The wind, the rain, the fans, the deep bunkers - you name it. It's something I always enjoy and it probably helped me win this thing."

Billy Horschel on champion Xander Schauffele: "Listen, he's the second best player this year in the world. No one has played better than him in my opinion.

"He's got two majors. I don't know if he's won anywhere else before the PGA, but he's been up there consistently, having chances to win.

"Obviously Scottie has got five or six wins and a major, but what Xander has done this year, the consistency he plays with - he's taken his game to another level.

"He deserves to hold that Claret Jug right now."

Justin Rose reflecting on the champion Xander Schauffele: "A guy at the top of his game. A guy that has all the attributes that make him a great player and a great champion.

"He's obviously now learning that winning is easy. He has a lot of horsepower, do you know what I mean? In the sense of he's good with a wedge, he's great with a putter, he hits the ball a long way and obviously his iron play is strong. So he's got a lot of weapons out there.

"I think probably one of his most unappreciated ones is his mentality. He's such a calm guy out there. I don't know what he's feeling, but he certainly makes it look very easy. He plays with a freedom, which kind of tells you as a competitor that he's probably not feeling a ton of the bad stuff.

"He's got a lot of runway ahead and a lot of exciting stuff ahead, I'm sure."

Once you feel like you belong and that you can win these majors, you're probably 99 percent of the way there.

Sometimes you can see that when someone wins their first event, they go on and win a few more, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Schauffele win some more.

Xander Schauffele now has some golfing CV on him after collecting his first two majors in the same year.

The lowest score in a men's major is 62 and has only been achieved five times in history - he's got two of them!

And he's now done something only Jack Nicklaus has done and that's shoot 65 in the final round to win a major twice.

He's a true major man, oh and also an Olympic champion!

  15. 'Schauffele a worthy champion, but heavy heart for Rose'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 21 July

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's been an incredible day for golf. Xander Schauffele has taken this championship by the scruff of the neck, he's gone on to dominate the day of proceedings.

He's such a worthy champion, such a classy guy. I thought he spoke really well when he picked up the Claret Jug.

I am sat here with a heavy heart for Justin Rose. He put everything out there, he did everything he possibly could and it just wasn't meant to be. I really hope he does get his hands on the Claret Jug one day.

Xander Schauffele speaking to Sky Sports: "I can't wait to drink out of it. My dad's here so I'll let him do the honours of choosing.

"It really is a dream come true to be holding it. It definitely hasn't sunk in yet. My brain is still grinding on this amazing property. I can't wait to sit back and have a moment with this Claret Jug.

"I thought [winning the PGA] would help me and it actually did. I had this sense of calm, a calm I didn't have when I played earlier at the PGA. For some reason, I was calm and collected. I was telling my caddie Austin that I felt pretty calm coming down the stretch and he said he was about to puke on the 18th tee!

"I just told myself to just hit it down there and keep moving along!"

Justin Rose, who finished tied for second place, has been speaking to Andy Stevenson:

"When I walked off the course it hit me. The dream's been alive all week and I felt that I did an awesome job of coming out and really getting amongst it from the word go.

"I got off to a strong start and felt like I played my way into the tournament.

"I saw glimpses of my name at the top of the leaderboard at times, did some of the hard work on the back nine but Xander got that momentum.

"He's an ice cold competitor and one of the best players in the world and it was tough to keep up.

"This will be a tough one but a great one. I played in some of the hardest weather all week. I played some of the best golf but it didn't quite add up to the trophy."

Xander Schauffele got some motivation by watching Henrik Stenson's win over Phil Mickelson at Troon in 2016 in the build-up:

"I actually watched the highlights of Phil and Henrik to motivate myself for this week and I guess that paid off pretty nice."
