Rose clashes with DeChambeau and caddy

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (4)

Another chance gone for Europe to edge ahead in this one.

Matt Fitzpatrick's right-to-left putt finishes an inch or two on the low side of the cup and that allows Patrick Cantlay to drop in a six footer for a birdie and share of the spoils.

Unlike elsewhere on the course this match is yet to ignite.

Shane Lowry’s dad Brendan seems unperturbed by the antics of the American fans.

He’s laughing as we discuss how tasty it was getting down in the sixth.

Real spice out on the course as tensions rise at Bethpage Black.

Attempts by home fans to unsettle Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry on the greens have largely proved fruitless thus far, though.

  4. Halved in birdiespublished at 19:16 BST

    1UP DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose (6)

And that is why he is world number one.

It felt like a must-make for Scottie Scheffler with Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose in closer and the putt lands straight in the middle of the cup.

Rose means business, though, and he is back on the birdie train to make sure Scheffler and DeChambeau don't stretch their lead.

  5. Postpublished at 19:13 BST

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (3)

That's a pearler from Matt Fitzpatrick who slings his second on to 12 feet on the par-five fourth hole.

Sam Burns is in the near bunker and Patrick Cantlay is off the back so the Englishman is the only player in this quartet to find the dance floor.

Can he convert this chance and help Europe forge ahead in this match?

  6. Postpublished at 19:12 BST

    1UP DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose (5)

    That is more like it!

They may not hit it quite as far as their American counterparts, but Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose have the touch around the course.

Two lovely approach shots from the European pair to give themselves really good birdie looks.

Not to be outdone, Scottie Scheffler also has a chance around 10 feet.

  7. 'Getting out of hand'published at 19:11 BST

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry 2UP (6)

    Shaun Micheel

I'm not sure but I'm seeing a lot more visible presence of the police. A lot more police heading towards the crowd.

Every hole's the same - they're picking on Shane and Rory and it's getting out of hand.

  8. USA levelpublished at 19:10 BST

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (4)

Xander Schauffele crashes in an eagle at the fourth to draw the USA level with a long-range putt. It's almost a waste though as both Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka were out of the hole anyway.

    All square here.

  9. 'Thomas shaking his head'published at 19:08 BST

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry 2UP (6)

    John Murray
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

Justin Thomas actually walked over to that side of the green and motioned to those people over there to quiet down with his hands – almost calming motion with his palms up and down. Justin Thomas has stepped up on that front.

He's shaking his head towards some of the spectators.

  10. Postpublished at 19:07 BST

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (3)

The third comes down to a putting contest between Sam Burns and Tyrrell Hatton again. Two of the very best, who at the moment cannot be separated.

More boos after McIlroy backs off.

"Can’t take it, Rory?" bawls a New York-accent.

The Bethpage crowd clearly think is fair game.

The New York State Police, decked out like grey Mounties, move in on one area of the crowd.

One officer tells me nobody was ejected, though.

Justin Thomas gestures to the crowd to calm it.

  12. Lowry holds his nervepublished at 19:06 BST

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry 2UP (6)

Rory McIlroy misses from distance but Shane Lowry rolls it in from about eight feet to halve the hole. Lowry might be fired up but he has ice running through his veins when it comes down to business.

McIlroy turns to the crowd and defiantly raises both his fists.

  13. 'Police organising and heading in that direction'published at 19:04 BST

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry 2UP (5)

    Shaun Micheel

The police are now organising and are heading in that direction. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a few of these people escorted off the property.

  14. Crowd heckling McIlroypublished at 19:03 BST

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry 2UP (5)

Rory McIlroy sits with his club on his chin waiting for the crowd to quieten down on the green at the sixth as the home crowd continue to heckle Europe's players.

He pulls away from the putt after a lone voice shouts something.

McIlroy shrugs his shoulders before a quick conflab with a Ryder Cup official.

  15. USA go one uppublished at 19:00 BST

    1UP DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose (5)

Tommy Fleetwood can't get his to drop and Bryson DeChambeau steps up first from the American pair... and no mistake as he pumps his fist to packed crowd around the sixth green.

Pars do not look like they will be good enough today in this fourball.

  16. Postpublished at 18:56 BST

    A/S DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose A/S (4)

Tommy Fleetwood is yet to really catch fire this afternoon after his impressive morning display, but he has given himself another slight look at birdie.

He might need to take it, too, with both Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler getting their approach shots to five feet of the hole.

Could this match be turning red soon?

  17. 'Pretty appalling what was said to McIlroy'published at 18:54 BST

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry 2UP (5)

    Shaun Micheel
2003 US PGA Championship winner on BBC Radio 5 live

It was pretty appalling what was said and Rory went over to the rules official and looked to have a conversation about when he’s over the ball, is there anything you can do to negate some of the things being said.

I think this is going to work against the US if [certain fans] continue the things they are saying.

It’s going to be over a lot quicker than even the US is worried about.

  18. Postpublished at 18:52 BST

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (2)

That will go down as an early missed opportunity for Europe with Matt Fitzpatrick failing to knock in a tiddler.

Hatton now has a putt of a similar length to halve the hole and makes no mistake.

In the background a fan shouts “fore” as the Englishman hits his putt.

Two huge roars of "Get in" - louder than every other reaction - come from the fifth green.

One from Shane Lowry. The other? From Shane Lowry’s dad.

  20. 'USA need to gather and get some points fast'published at 18:49 BST

    Spaun/Schauffele v Rahm/Straka 1UP (3)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Bethpage Black

It’s a new game and it’s desperately important to get a game on the board. Everyone wants to come here and contribute. That’s the main thing. Refocus, get out here and try and do your best.

This American team needs to really gather and get some points on the board fast.
