    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (11)

Shane Lowry thumps his iron in frustration after finding the bunker with his approach to the 12th.

Rory McIlroy walloped a huge drive with his tee shot, though, and a seven iron from 170 yards puts him closet to the pin but not by much.

Both Justin Thomas and Cameron Young also on the green in two and a similar distance from the hole.

  2. Postpublished at 20:47 BST 27 September

It's tight - but Europe have the edge at the moment.

    Three European matches in front
  3. Fitzpatrick putts Europe aheadpublished at 20:47 BST 27 September

    Burns/Cantlay v Fitzpatrick/Hatton 1UP (9)

A few oohs and ahhs as Patrick Cantlay's birdie putt from 11 feet skips on past the hole.

Matt Fitzpatrick's putter has been pretty cold in the fourballs but he drains his effort and then motions for greenside fans to settle down. Europe are finally ahead in this match.

Couldn't resist the pun in the headline!

  4. PGA statement on fan behaviourpublished at 20:47 BST 27 September

The PGA of America, the body which runs the Ryder Cup, has released a statement in light of the crowd's behaviour in the match containing Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry.

“We have added security and State Police to Match No.1 as well as the other three matches in today’s afternoon fourballs," it read.

"Additionally, the frequency of fan behaviour messaging on video boards across the golf course has increased. We will continue to closely monitor fan behaviour and take appropriate action.”

  5. Postpublished at 20:43 BST 27 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (8)

A wry smile from Tyrrell Hatton who catches a tree branch with his second after going way left off the ninth tee. The home fans let him know all about that with Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay on the dance floor.

The only bonus for Hatton is that his playing partner Matt Fitzpatrick is also able to land his ball up there (just) inside both of their opponents' balls.

  6. Postpublished at 20:43 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 2UP (10)

But who can hit it close after those monster drives?

Tommy Fleetwood - 20 feet away as he was half a club short.

Bryson DeChambeau - finesses a wedge to eight feet.

Justin Rose - shuts the clubface on his approach and turns it over, so that's long and left in the rough.

Scottie Scheffler - after the longest drive by nine years, hits a 7/10 approach to 15 feet. It will give DeChambeau a good read though.

  7. 'Flanked by state police'published at 20:42 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (11)

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live golf commentator

Rory McIlroy is flanked by state police as they walk from the hole.

I don’t think that is a coincidence that the state police are surrounding him in that situation.

  8. Get Involvedpublished at 20:41 BST 27 September

Peter: It is a shame the spectators think that insulting the opposing team to put them off is the right way to try and win a tournament. It is an insult to their own players to show they have to help their players win with insults

Nick: Just goes to show the world rankings aren't fit for for purpose. Too many points awarded on the USPGA for playing on easier courses

Jim: The idiots shouting must be embarrassing for the USA players. If they win then it would be a travesty. Fortunately the European team are rising above all this nonsense.

John: I should imagine the Golden Bear, Tom Watson and their contemporaries are less than impressed by this crowd behaviour. As everyone knows, it's nothing new and it is still a sorry sight in a sport where etiquette is the name of the game.

  9. 'Had quite the partner in Lowry'published at 20:40 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (11)

    Shaun Micheel
2003 US PGA Championship winner on BBC Radio 5 live

The emotion of today. All the stuff that goes on in the build up to this adds to it.

McIlroy has been scratching his nose, scratching his head, got his head down quite a bit. But, he has had quite the partner in Shane Lowry today.

  10. Postpublished at 20:39 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 2UP (10)

Some serious artillery sent down the 11th in Match Two.

  11. Lowry holds his nervepublished at 20:38 BST 27 September

    It's tense on the 11th.

Rory McIlroy is just wide with a 50-foot putt while Shane Lowry's chip from just off the edge of the green just misses the hole.

That leaves Justin Thomas with a chance to win the hole with a putt from 10 feet, but he fizzes it a fraction wide.

McIlroy misses from about six feet leaving Lowry with a kneeknocker from about four feet to halve the hole. The Irishman steadies himself and breathes a sigh of relief after sinking it.

  12. 'Rahm absolutely took advantage'published at 20:37 BST 27 September

    Spaun/Schauffele v Rahm/Straka 2UP (9)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Bethpage Black

[Jon Rahm] absolutely needed to take advantage of that and you can’t afford to let any opportunities like that go by right now.

Keep applying the pressure on the US team is exactly what they’re doing.

  13. Two up at the turn!published at 20:36 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 2UP (9)

Jon Rahm hits his approach to seven feet on the ninth and with Xander Schauffele and JJ Spaun miles away they can't do any better than a four.

Sepp Straka actually comes closest to holing out from downtown, but it's left to Rahm to stroke his birdie putt home and put this European pair two ahead at the turn.

  14. 'Back in boisterous country'published at 20:32 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (10)

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live golf commentator

We are back in boisterous country.

They are being very loud in the grandstand. But, Justin Thomas and Cam Young have both asked for silence.

  15. Postpublished at 20:32 BST 27 September

    Jonathan Jurejko
BBC Sport golf news reporter at Bethpage Black

A message reminding the crowd to behave has been flashed up on the big screen close to the 11th green.

    Jeers greet it.

  16. Postpublished at 20:32 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (10)

Rory McIlroy and Cameron Young both chip out of the sand on the green at the 11th.

Justin Thomas is the best placed of the four players having come in off the fairway.

  17. Europe 2UP in match twopublished at 20:31 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 2UP (10)

Right, Scottie Scheffler. He deserves this chip to go in. And it nearly does. Catches the edge but not enough of it to drop in.

So it's left to Bryson DeChambeau. Can he find a putt to stay just one down?

No. Misses by half an inch in truth, on the left side.

  18. Postpublished at 20:28 BST 27 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (8)

Nothing is quite dropping at the moment and another opportunity to add another shade of blue to the scoreboard goes begging as Matt Fitzpatrick's mid-range left-to-right putt arcs away from the cup on the eighth green.

  19. 'You see it every week... but rarely does it interfere'published at 20:27 BST 27 September

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live at Bethpage Black

Obviously around the ninth which is very atmospheric part, around the matches that have the big names, that is where people are shouting out. Trying to make a name for themselves.

We know that is part of American culture. You see it every week on PGA tour, those lone voices, but very rarely does it interfere with the play. Very rarely does it cause players to back off their shots, but that is what we have been seeing today.

  20. Scoreboard checkpublished at 20:26 BST 27 September

Scoreboard - two blue, two grey

    Ever so tight
