Europe build lead on feisty second day at Ryder Cup

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (8)

Tommy Fleetwood decides he needs to pull his weight and hits his approach on the 10th stone dead.

Scottie Scheffler follows that by hitting the flag - and his ball bounces off the pin and into the fringe. That was incredibly unlucky for Scheffler.

Justin Rose hits his iron to 10 feet, but it's irrelevant as Fleetwood is in for a three effectively.

Bryson DeChambeau hits an acceptable iron but compared to Fleetwood it looks shabby.

The US must hole one of their shots or go two down.

  2. Rose follows his ball in stylepublished at 20:24 BST 27 September

    Scheffler/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (9)

Don't panic about the darkness on the still of this video. Instead, bask in the light of Justin Rose's majestic performance.

When I walk after one of my shots, it's not usually because of this result...

  3. 'Finally deciding they want to see some quality golf'published at 20:21 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (10)

    Shaun Micheel
2003 US PGA Championship winner on BBC Radio 5 live

I think the spectators are finally deciding they want to see some quality golf.

They want it to be about the four men out there on the course playing.

It has been very nice, the last few holes there hasn’t been much [said]. In fact, on the last hole we had a group trying to start the wave which is a favourite part of American culture

  4. Bin drinking?published at 20:20 BST 27 September

A picture of bins at Bethpage Black

We've just had this photo through from our colleagues at Bethpage.

Plenty of tins been consumed on the premises at Bethpage Black so far today.

Apparently the strongest alcohol is $19.

While those bins are pretty overflowing, I can't say I've got any pics from other Ryder Cups - or those of other sporting events - for comparison.

  5. Spectators given reminder...published at 20:20 BST 27 September

This message has flashed up on screens around the course. And it's not difficult to work out why the authorities have decided it was required. Will it have any effect? Or is the presence of the police more likely to be heeded...

Chris: Some of the comments being levelled at players is humourless and offensive. NYC is a great place to visit and New Yorkers are generous of spirit. This behaviour does not reflect well on them or the US in general.

Ewen: It's a sporting event, not a war...play the game and enjoy it. I won't watch or listen to the abuse given to either side.

Rich: Ryder Cup is a great event with rivalry that needs no "ramping up." It would have only taken a brief pause, a spectator to be ejected, and everyone else would show respect. Unfortunately, it's like dealing with low level classroom behaviour at school. We just want to watch golf!

Ali: It’s disgusting, the booing is bad enough (and that disgusts me) but the gamesmanship of waiting until the backswing is a disgrace. Put them out as soon as they open their mouths!!

John: Utterly classless carry on. A bit of banter and chanting is fine but once the player is over the ball it’s time to quieten down. No better answer though than to close out this second day with another 3-1 win.

Harry: Europe been far too good for USA. Every one of the players has stepped up, Rahm dominated the world number one, Rory has been superb and Fleetwood and Rose. USA have not done a lot wrong but have so far been beaten by the better team and better players. Simple.

  7. 10th hole halvedpublished at 20:18 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (10)

Is there a danger the emotion of the front nine taking a toll on Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry here perhaps?

Lowry misses the green on the 10th and McIlroy comes up short with a birdie putt to present the American pair with a chance to go one up.

Neither Justin Thomas nor Cameron Young are able to putt in from distance, though. As you were heading into the 11th in match one.

  8. Postpublished at 20:14 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (8)

Nobody can make a putt on the eighth - seems to be a theme over the last few minutes - with Jon Rahm having the best chance from 14 feet just on the fringe of the green.

JJ Spain misses a bad one so Xander Schauffele has to get his putter back out and knock in his tiddler for the half.

  9. Fleetwood's putt slides pastpublished at 20:14 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (9)

Tommy Fleetwood also misses. He was very quickly over that putt.

It felt a bit rushed, and that was one he would absolutely expect to make.

Still, this Euro pair move on to the 10th one up.

  10. Postpublished at 20:12 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (8)

And here is Bryson DeChambeau with his eight footer. Nope, not this time BDC. Slides past.

Scottie Scheffler now. Three feet. NO! That was a push from the world number one.

Now then, can Tommy Fleetwood hole his? This would be a big moment in this high-quality match...

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (7)

All four balls well in play on the seventh although Patrick Cantlay then tugs his second into the right greenside bunker as Tyrrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick both find the putting surface.

The American goes close as he splashes out in fine style, while Sam Burns runs a long putt down towards gimme range. This going to be another hole halved.

  12. Postpublished at 20:09 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (8)

Justin Rose, in a shock twist, hits his approach 20 feet away. Useless from Rose (hope you can detect the sarcasm)!

And then Bryson DeChambeau arrows his approach to about eight feet.

Three very good looks at birdie in this group. US with two of them.

  13. Postpublished at 20:09 BST 27 September

    Jonathan Jurejko
BBC Sport golf news reporter at Bethpage Black

The first group is already a tinderbox, so the Americans fighting back only serves to further fuel the rambunctious behaviour.

Thomas bears his teeth on the ninth green, yelling in delight as his eyes bulge towards the home fans.

One steward, who looked exasperated as he tried to quell the fans before the putts, shakes his fist in celebration.

“This is crazy!” he grins. Crazy than you thought it would be? “Even crazier than I thought it’d be.”

He says this atmosphere compares to no other he has witnessed at a sporting occasion in New York.

“Baseball, football, basketball… they don’t have the intense rivalry this does.”

Max: Referees need to be stronger and stop play until behaviour is appropriate like at snooker. Unfortunately, this boorish nonsense is part of US sport culture, watch college basketball for example. They need to learn sportsmanship. Would be a great win for us

Ken: If the hecklers have ever played golf they’d learn to keep quiet when players are taking their shots. yellow card for 1st offence then red for 2nd

Mike: Just spoils what is a fantastic sporting event. Been watching on mute for past 3 hours.

Gary: Not surprising - why do fans think it’s ok to get involved in the game? Imagine paying over 1,000 dollars just to hurl abuse at golfers just because your team is getting beat.

Pam: Banter, fine. But this has gone way beyond that, I’m 72, followed golf for years, I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s truly shameful.

What do you make of scenes?

  15. Postpublished at 20:06 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (8)

A dart from Tommy Fleetwood from 169 yards on the ninth. That is as good as a three.

Can Scottie Scheffler match it? Yes he can. That is absolutely majestic golf.

Basically in match two, you need to make birdie to not lose the hole.

  16. 'We are right in the heart of it'published at 20:05 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (9)

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live at Bethpage

It feels like now, in the months and years of build up to this Ryder Cup we have talked so much about what the atmosphere is going to be like and this is it. We are right in the heart of it.

We have got Justin Thomas in the middle of it as well and I think he is playing it well. Celebrating when going well and then hushing the crowd when needed.

All credit to Justin Thomas. He is treading the right line. He ii up when he should be up. He is being respectful and he is playing excellent golf.

McIlroy walking through walkway together with Lowry with his arm round his shoulder. There is a gentle chorus of booing.

As one blue stripe disappears, Sepp Straka duly plants another on the latest leaderboard.

The US cannot get a foothold.

Scoreboard - two blue, other two grey
  18. A welcome Europe holepublished at 20:01 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (7)

USA just looking to pinch the momentum in that top match, but here Sepp Straka says not so fast and as quick as some blue was removed from the scoreboard he puts more back on there with a birdie at seven.

Xander Schauffele needed to can a 15 footer to try and force a half, and when he couldn;t the big Austrian stepped up and slotted home his putt to move his team in front.

  19. All square as USA battle backpublished at 19:59 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (9)

Justin Thomas roars in celebration with putter in handImage source, Getty Images

Justin Thomas gesticulates to settle down the crowd surrounding the ninth green to allow Rory McIlroy to take his putt.

The Northern Irishman goes close before Justin Thomas rolls it in for a bridie to heap the pressure on Shane Lowry to halve the hole from about six feet.

    But Lowry misses.

USA have battled back from two down to go all square.

  20. Postpublished at 19:56 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (8)

When I say that Justin Rose walked that in, I really do mean it. He had taken at least two steps before that dropped in the hole.

That was Tiger-esque confidence that the putt was dropping.
