The big screen that dominates the 15th tee temporarily switches to the scoreboard while Rory McIlroy tees off.

A distant cheer from way up the hill… phones are checked. Aberg putt missed. A guaranteed half point is greeted with cheers.

And then eyes turn up the 16th fairway as the players plot their way back down the hill.

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (12)

Xander Schauffele is especially useful with his wedges but that pitch dug its toes in and leaves a long putt for four.

I just could copy and paste that sentence above for what Jon Rahm did.

So, two lengthy putts coming up for four, Europe a good bit closer.

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (12)

To the par-five 13th, and both teams in the fairway. Tyrrell Hatton hits a nice fairway wood, short and left of the green.

Patrick Cantlay makes a rare mistake, a duck hook into the left rough that will need a delicate pitch from his partner.

An image of supporters at the 15th tee

The sun is out and thousands of fans are gathered in a super spot that overlooks the 15th tee, 16th green and whole of the short 17th.

Most eyes are glued on the big screens though as they wait for the groups to come through.

  5. Dormie three to the USApublished at 15:28 BST 27 September

    3UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (15)

Oh that's horrible! Ludvig Aberg hits a really nice putt sliding down the hill for the win, but it just hits the edge and lips out!

That leaves the USA three up with three to play and guaranteed a half point at least - they'll surely get the full point though shortly.

  6. USA get hole backpublished at 15:26 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 3UP (14)

    Rory McIlroy misses!

It's their first bogey of the day and it gives Harris English and Collin Morikawa a glimmer of hope with four holes left to play.

    They couldn't... could they?

  7. Postpublished at 15:24 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 4UP (13)

It is near enough blow-for-blow in this foursomes.

Every time Harris English and Collin Morikawa think they may just have opened the door a little, it is almost instantly slammed shut.

Tommy Fleetwood's follows Morikawa's tee-shot into green on the 14th and gives his McIlroy a chance to win the match.

He can't take it... and sends it too long for comfort as well.

English secures the Americans' par, can Rory secure Europe's?

  8. USA winpublished at 15:24 BST 27 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (11)

Poor from Bob MacIntyre with an errant approach that leads to a bogey, which you simply can't be doing in foursomes - and allows USA to claw a hole back.

It also gives Scottie Scheffler a bit of belief as well which could be dangerous if he finally finds some of his best stuff.

  9. Colour reversalpublished at 15:22 BST 27 September

Those of you who were with us yesterday might have noticed me moaning about the colours of the respective team uniforms, with both in white.

Well today I'm just extraordinarily confused.

The US are in blue and Europe are in a burgundy red?

If that's Keegan Bradley's attempt to make the leaderboard look more accommodating, it's not really working.

    3UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (14)

Great shot from Matt Fitzpatrick, stinging a mid iron into the 15th green, and Europe are closer than Cameron Young when his effort goes a bit long, but it's pretty even given Europe need to win holes quickly.

  11. Bradley in bother at Bethpagepublished at 15:21 BST 27 September

The final four holes are across a road from holes 2-14. When US captain Keegan Bradley was at college his team used to sneak on to play those inner holes when the course was closed on a Monday.

They were told not to play 15-18 because they would be spotted by security.

Inevitably, curiosity got the better of them one day and they were caught and given a ticking off.

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP

    James Gregg
BBC Radio 5 Live reporter at Bethpage Black

This volatile European cocktail is up against the blandest of beverages.

And it's the cocktail that is prevailing at the moment.

  13. Europe double leadpublished at 15:19 BST 27 September

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (12)

Patrick Cantlay to putt first on the 12th. Unlikely three really, and he nudges that a foot past with a good lag putt.

Tyrrell Hatton now. Chance to double the lead. Drops it in the right half of the cup. Europe double the lead. Crucial.

Jose Maria Olazabal is following this match and Jon Rahm's performance is the equal of anything we saw from him or even his great friend Seve Ballesteros in their pomp.

  14. Europe savepublished at 15:18 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 4UP (13)

Well rescued by Europe and perhaps opportunity missed for team USA.

Harris English and Collin Morikawa need every putt they can get, but, English having hit a so-so approach onto the green, Morikawa can't get the ball to drop from distance and walks away with a five.

Tommy Fleetwood gets his 64-footer to within four feet of the hole and allows McIlroy to tidy up and keep the holes - and their lead - ticking along.

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Rahm/Hatton 1UP

A Spaniard with magic hands inspiring Europe at the Ryder Cup.

Jon Rahm once again channelling his inner Seve Ballesteros.

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 1UP (11)

Jon Rahm you are a ridiculous man. The ball is lying in juicy rough but he gouges that out to about four feet.

Key match this, and if Rahm has anything to do with it, Europe will hang on.

  17. Postpublished at 15:13 BST 27 September

    3UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (14)

Europe dodge a bullet as Bryson DeChambeau misses from eight feet - it's still a half though that moves them a hole closer to finishing this match off.

And they way these two have played they need to finish this off quickly as they'll surely be going out together this afternoon.

  18. 'Hovland and MacIntyre a really good pairing'published at 15:11 BST 27 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 2UP (9)

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup on BBC Radio 5 Live

Fantastic play and I think it’s a really good pairing.

Viktor’s such a happy-go-lucky guy and Bob is really laughing and enjoying it – I think he’s keeping Bob just that little bit looser.

  19. Scottie salvages a halfpublished at 15:11 BST 27 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 2UP (10)

    Scottie SchefflerImage source, Getty Images

Scottie Scheffler does make a putt from distance this time, that's the good news for the USA - but the bad news is that it's only for a half so they stay two down in this one.

  20. Postpublished at 15:10 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 4UP (12)

It was all looking good from the tee shots on the par five 13th for both Europe and USA.

It is looking less rosy after the second.

Collin Morikawa has sent his into the rough near the bunker before the green, meanwhile, Tommy Fleetwood's ball has ended up in the trees on the right.

The European pair will do well to leave this hole with their four-hole lead intact.
