Europe build lead on feisty second day at Ryder Cup

  1. USA claim pointpublished at 23:20 BST 27 September

    1UP Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka (F)

Nothing much Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka can do with their efforts on the 18th green to prevent the USA from taking the hole.

Rahm putts for par, but JJ Spaun taps in for a birdie to seal a vital point for the hosts.

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (17)

The final group head onto the 18th tee.

Anywhere on the fairway or first cut will do and Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay oblige. As does Tyrrell Hatton as his European team-mate Matt Fitzpatrick leaks his right into a fairway bunker.

  3. Shades of 2012?published at 23:14 BST 27 September

Anyone remember Medinah in 2012? Europe trailing 10-4, win the final two matches on Saturday - both on the final hole - to get to 10-6 and take that momentum through to a miraculous Sunday win?

  4. 'A challenging day'published at 23:14 BST 27 September

Rory McIlroy, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, after he and Shane Lowry won match one against Justin Thomas and Cameron Young: "It was mostly good for us. We are just so happy to get a blue point on the board. It's our first full point as a partnership, we weren't able to get a full one at Whistling Straits, we had a half yesterday, and then a full one today.

"So I'm really happy that I'm able to walk inside the ropes with this man and he was there for me today. All of the credit for this win goes to Shane. It was a really challenging day. I am going to sleep well tonight."

  5. USA eye late pointpublished at 23:14 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka A/S (17)

Up the hill to the 18th and JJ Spaun's iron shot is a stunner.

It plops on to the green then spins back to within a foot of the hole.

Sepp Straka is off the green, while Jon Rahm finds the sand.

A chance for USA to pinch a point at the end here?

    A/S Burns/Cantlay v Hatton /Fitzpatrick A/S (17)

    A graph of the match

Earlier, this was the game that had barely anything going for it.

But that's how tight it's been.

Fitting that Burns and Cantlay against Hatton and Fitzpatrick is going the distance.

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (17)

Sensational from Tyrrell Hatton. He tickles another putt right into the heart of the cup to prevent the US duo from taking a lead down the 18th.

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (16)

Lots of shouts of 'get in the hole' swirl around the 17th tee as Sam Burns zings his iron into the green on the par three and spins his ball back to four feet.

You'd put your mortgage on him to drop that in for a birdie and with Patrick Cantlay almost 20 feet out it that has upped the decibels considerably.

Not to be outdone Matt Fitzpatrick plays a beauty to five feet.

Europe needed that albeit Tyrrell Hatton has a presentable birdie chance as well with his ball trickling down the slope towards the flag.

  9. Get Involvedpublished at 23:09 BST 27 September

Adam: The ultra partisan crowd have had a negative effect on the US team. Embarrassed them and put more pressure on them.

Grahame: Unbelievable golf expertly handled by our boys! Time for a rendition of Sweet Caroline me thinks …. so good so good !

Chris: Europe playing for pride & not pennies. Bring it home fellas

David: Is there any reason they don't have red balls for USA and blue balls for Europe? Would make it easier to understand where each team is when TV cuts from hole to hole.

That sounds like my issue with the uniforms, David. Why are they wearing each other's colours?!

  10. Postpublished at 23:08 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka A/S (17)

Xander Schauffele and JJ Spaun both drive solidly at the tee box on the 401-yard 18th hole.

Ditto Sepp Straka and Jon Rahm.

Not much to choose between them. All to play for on the final hole in this match.

The least colourful leaderboard we have seen for some time.

Two blue matches and two all square
  12. Hatton & Cantlay trade big momentspublished at 23:02 BST 27 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (16)

A chip in birdie from Matt Fitzpatrick would be the icing on the cake here but his effort trickles past the cup.

Tyrrell Hatton is the man to deliver another massive moment for Europe, punching the air as he rattles the back of the cup from 20 feet.

Worst case scenario from here is walking on to the 17th tied...

But could it get better than that? Sam Burns' putt limps up to the hole and stops an inch short.

Patrick Cantlay, the man who has barely taken his team hat off at Bethpage Black, retrieves the situation.

  13. Spaun levels for USpublished at 23:01 BST 27 September

    Blink!

Did Jon Rahm take too long over that putt? It seems like that's the first one has missed.

But in goes JJ Spaun's putt and the European blue is wiped away.

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (16)

Sepp Straka and Xander Schauffele both miss their birdie putts at the 17th.

Can Jon Rahm or JJ Spaun make theirs count?

  15. Postpublished at 22:56 BST 27 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (15)

Matt Fitzpatrick launches his approach towards the 16th green but the fact there's not a flicker of sound at all tells the Englishman he has turned that over, with his ball going long and right.

Not ideal with his playing partner Tyrrell Hatton in the knotty longer grass down the right back down the hole.

The 33-year-old somehow whips into the heart of the green from there but both Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay are better placed.

  16. Postpublished at 22:56 BST 27 September

Sheer joy in the eyes of Rory McIlroy as he greets Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose after thier stunning performances this afternoon.

    Talk about Europeans delivering.

  17. Postpublished at 22:55 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (16)

Every time Jon Rahm has been asked a question he has responded in style and do so once again here at 17.

It's not as close as Spaun, but if he knocks that in from eight feet, he will guarantee Europe at least half a point.

  18. Postpublished at 22:54 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (16)

America's captain Keegan Bradley accompanied JJ Spaun and Xander Schauffele to the 17th tee.

Whatever he said clearly worked as both have hit pearls onto that expansive green, Spaun leaving himself three feet for birdie.

    How will Europe respond?

Talking of emotions erupting, two fellas lunge at each other on the 18th grandstand.

Not sure why they are fighting or who they are supporting, but they both get hauled out by police.

Security were very sharp on the scene to sort it out.

A police officer tells me there were no arrests.

  20. 'Still work to be done to keep blue on the board'published at 22:49 BST 27 September

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Bethpage Black

It’s looking really good but there’s still work to be done. There’s two big points still to play for out here today.

They’ve just got to try and keep the blue on the board.
