'It revs him up' - McIlroy hits brilliant approach after fan altercation

  1. Might Donald change his strategy?published at 16:46 BST

Might the fact Rory McIlroy's matches have more or less finished out in the country mean he - and perhaps also Tommy Fleetwood - lead to a change in strategy from captain Luke Donald?

Will Donald be tempted to send his main men out for a fourth session in a row because they haven't been down 18 three times already?

Might it be bad news for the likes if Tyrrell Hatton and Ludvig Aberg, who might not get out this afternoon?

Jon Rahm has played more holes but the Spanish bull has the demeanour of a man who is adamant he will play all five sessions this week.

Somehow Europe escape with a half!

Bob MacIntyre has a putt from a different zip code with the crowd giving him hardly a moment's silence, and he leaves Viktor Hovland about 12 feet.

Russell Henley can't hole out for the birdie so Hovland can halve the hole with this putt, under all kinds of pressure, the crowd rumbling in the background, but the Norwegian rolls it in!

There's a huge fist pump as Europe go dormie one, with a guaranteed half point coming their way, can they take a full point though?

    “Attaboy Scottie!”

The most American of satisfied statements sums up the mood around the 17th tee.

MacIntyre comforts Hovland with a hand in the shoulder. Forget about it, son. That’s the message.

The gallery behind the green has burst into life - chanting, booing and generally making a racket.

Then they count how long MacIntyre is taking over his putt.

What a shot from Scheffler. That’s what we have come to expect from Scottie with these iron shots.

The Americans have the advantage here, and the crowd is egging them on.

    Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (16)

Poor tee shot on 17 from Viktor Hovland who is miles away, and Scottie Scheffler takes the chance to fire one in nice and close and it looks like this will go level pretty soon.

  6. 'Unrelenting tension'published at 16:34 BST

    Relief for the Americans.

The hole is halved in pars, but halves are all Europe need from this match.

Unrelenting tension in this bottom match.

  7. Half on 16published at 16:34 BST

    Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (16)

A couple of nervy looking putts there, Russell Henley probably a better effort from further away, before Robert MacIntyre hits one that lacked any sort of intensity.

He definitely had the thought of not knocking it too far past rather than trying to hole it.

Not time for lunchtime sandwiches yet. Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton have got some golf to watch.

After a quick debrief with captain Luke Donald on the 16th green, the trio head to rough on the left of the putting surface to provide support for Vik and Bob.

It is stadium golf, it is jam packed.

It is a little subdued from the American side after this morning session.

Europe's grip on this Ryder Cup is growing stronger.

Scottie Scheffler with a nice wedge shot, pin high and about 20 feet left of the flag, then Viktor Hovland throws a dart right at the pin, and it lands really close but the spin takes it back down the slope about 15 feet away.

Think we are exaggerating how good Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton are together?

Both Rahm and Hatton - as well as Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood - are now 4-0-0 in career Ryder Cup foursomes.

Rahm has lost just one of his past 13 Ryder Cup matches (9-1-3) and is unbeaten in 10 pairs matches since 2018 (8-0-2).

These pairs deserve to be spoken of in the same breath as the ultimate European pairing, Seve and Ollie.

Rival groups of American and European fans competed for the attention of Jon Rahm on the 16th green.

You can gather the nature of the respective barbs.

One home fan tells Rahm to shift because he’s blocking their view of the hole.

Rahm doesn’t flinch. Hatton doesn't either when he clinches the win.

The pair break into broad smiles, embrace each other, then hug the watching skipper Luke Donald and his assistant Jose Maria Olazabel.

“Ole, ole, ole, oleeeee!” sing the European fans here.

Right then, just this match left on the course and it looks like going down to the wire.

Bob MacIntyre steps up on the 16th tee and lays the Scottish hammer down on it, smacking a driver 327 yards right down the throat of the fairway.

Russell Henley finds the left rough in response, but not too bad.

  14. Hatton-Rahm love-inpublished at 16:23 BST

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Rahm/Hatton 3&2

Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm are unbeaten in five matches together. And they love playing together...

Hatton: "He is a certainly a good partner. He pulls out some unbelievable shots at special times and is a good person to walk the fairways with."

Meanwhile, Rahm on his wonder chip on the 8th: "I just wanted to hopefully get it on line and the right distance. It's a bit of luck, the ball was lying well and I got decent contact."

Bob MacIntyre - nerves of steel for Europe!

He clenches his fist and gives a little wink to his partner Hovland.

  16. Big putt Bob!published at 16:20 BST

    Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (15)

Viktor Hovland fluffs his chips from the back of the 15th green, stubbing his effort with a dreaded deceleration into the back of the ball, and it leaves Bob MacIntyre with a testing 10 footer down the slope, is he up to it?

You bet he is! What a putt that is, all heart from the Scotsman.

That turns the heat up on Russell Henley for his putt but this is a rather simple one straight up the hill which he rolls in for the half - but a half won by Europe that one.

    Xander Schauffele holes.

This for the win from Tyrrell Hatton.

A 3&2 win for Europe in a tight match that could have slipped away unless they were careful.

Patrick Cantlay first. He's stalking this like a man who knows he might have to make it to keep his game alive.

Up the hill, off the shoulder on the right. Tricky to get line and length right.

He doesn't. Never threatens, and in fact the worst words in golf are apt "it's still you".

    Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (14)

Both teams up on the 15th green - well Europe just off it and 30 feet away and Team USA probably double that but on the dancefloor. Once again it's a putting contest, many say the Ryder Cup is just one long battle of the flatsticks.
