Europe build lead on feisty second day at Ryder Cup

  1. Emotional McIlroy lets it all outpublished at 21:38 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry 1UP (14)

Rory McIlroy has been far from fluent during this nip-and-tuck first match but he's managed to hold his game, and his emotions, together.

He putts in from about five feet at the 14th and there's a huge release of emotion, and a few expletives, to heap the pressure on Justin Thomas.

The American wilts and his putt from a similar distance goes off at a right angle.

Europe regain the lead in match one.

  2. Hole halved in birdiespublished at 21:36 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 2UP (13)

Scottie Scheffler does indeed make his birdie - but that will feel like a loss to this star-studded US pair.

Tommy Fleetwood with a savage blow to the solar plexus.

If Justin Thomas fancies giving golf up, then he’s got a bright future ahead in crowd control.

Albert. Attentive. Assertive. And authoritative arm signals.

He’s got all the qualities needed to quieten people.

    TOMMY FLEETWOOD!

The Southport lad coaxes a 25-footer in for birdie.

That will be an absolute sickener for the US pair.

Now Scottie Scheffler has to hole his just for the half!

They know they need something, they need a lot from this session.

You can sense the fight in this American team today.

They are not going to let this go easily.

  6. Spaun misses birdie chancepublished at 21:33 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (12)

Three long birdie putts don't drop for this group over at the 12th green.

So JJ Spaun has the chance from 12 and a half feet to wipe out the European blue. But he can't.

    On we go.

  7. 'Big splodge of blue, but it's narrow'published at 21:30 BST 27 September

    Burns/Cantlay v Hatton/Fitzpatrick 1UP (11)

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live at Bethpage Black

It’s been such a tight tense contest. Only one hole won throughout by Matt Fitzpatrick on the ninth.

Big splodge of blue on the board, but it’s narrow.

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 2UP (12)

Scottie Scheffler must have heard about my barb. He hits it to three feet on the 13th.

    Sorry for jinxing that, everyone.

This has got the makings of an all-time match.

  9. 'Fatigue playing a bit of a part'published at 21:29 BST 27 September

    Spaun/Schauffele v Rahm/Straka 1UP (10)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Bethpage Black

I think fatigue is playing a bit of a part. Long days, long walks around this golf course and it’s hard to keep executing.

We’ve seen a couple of loose shots that you weren’t really expecting, Four rounds over two days in the heat – it’s a long week.

They’ve got to hang in there as long as they can.

Sheesh. Nerves of steel from McIlroy. Looked routine but didn’t feel like it.

McIlroy’s dad Gerry cuts the tension on the way to the 14th tee.

"Anyway, what’s the Spurs score?" he chuckles.

    Burns/Cantlay v Fitzpatrick/Hatton 1UP (11)

Matt Fitzpatrick will need to rely on Tyrrell Hatton from downtown at the 11th.

He slings his ball left and long into the rough and all of a sudden the English duo's hard-fought lead is looking vulnerable.

Hatton comes up with a quite brilling putt from 52 feet that stops inches shy of the cup but Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns are both putting to win the hole from inside 20 feet.

Cantlay's closest but sweeps four feet past, leaving Burns to tidy up and halve a hole they looked favourites to take.

  13. 'Tense and attritional'published at 21:25 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (13)

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have been hanging in there, playing some tidy uncomplicated golf, since they were pegged back to all square having been two up.

They get a glimmer of hope on the 13th after Cameron Young and Justin Thomas and Cameron Young make a dog's dinner of getting on the green.

McIlroy misses a 15-foot putt and a chance to put the pressure on. After Young squanders his birdie chance it's left to McIlroy to slide one in to halve the hole.

Maybe America would be doing better if they weren't wearing caps?

  16. Get Involvedpublished at 21:17 BST 27 September

Paul: Nothing beats Ryder Cup golf. These players play week in week out against each other and desperately hoping to beat one another. However when Ryder Cup golf comes around the togetherness on each team is phenomenal, particularly the Europeans. You can cut the atmosphere with a knife. Fab!

Malc: Remember when the Ryder Cup was a close contest? Maybe we need to add some 'rest of world' players to make America competitive again?

Joey: How many holes has Tommy Fleetwood won for Europe in the last two days. Absolutely ice cold on the greens. Wonderful stuff.

Chris: Totally enjoying the golf.... TV on mute with BBC Sport app live reporting. Feel for the players surrounded by boorish louts.

Adrian: I wish I was young enough to have Justin Rose as my grandpa

Both captains following this first match tells you two things: how crucial this contest is and how tight it is.

"You’re doing a great job, Keegan," shouts an American fan.

"Yeah. For Europe…" comes a European reply.

Scoreboard - three blue, one all square

Apparently America have only been leading for two holes throughout this entire fourball so far.

And that putt from Tommy Fleetwood just keeps the door closed on the world number one.

Scottie Scheffler staring down the barrel of four defeats from four here.

  19. Fleetwood makes, Europe 2UPpublished at 21:13 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 2UP (12)

Can Bryson DeChambeau save the US? You just know he loving carrying the world number one on his back.

It's about 20 feet away. Across the green. Not loads in it.

And he burns the left edge of the hole. That was a fantastic effort.
