Europe build lead on feisty second day at Ryder Cup

  1. 'My goodness!' - McIlroy birdies fifth for fourth in a rowpublished at 14:13 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 4UP (8)

One European group is absolutely in control.

This was Rory McIlroy on the fifth, making a fourth birdie in a row alongside partner Tommy Fleetwood.

  2. Match three tied uppublished at 14:13 BST 27 September

    Cantlay/Schauffele A/S Hatton/Rahm (7)

Patrick Cantlay HOLES. He is a competitor of the highest order.

    Tyrrell Hatton MISSES.

The US are edging their own personal putting competition at the moment.

  3. Postpublished at 14:09 BST 27 September

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 1UP (6)

Poor from Jon Rahm. That is as easy a chip as you can get and should have been stone dead. Eight feet left for the four.

Now Xander Schauffele. Easy bunker shot for him too... but he also makes a mess of it. Way past the flag and they will putt first.

  4. Europe two ahead!published at 14:07 BST 27 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 2UP (5)

Some bunker trouble for Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley sees the Americans make a bogey with Robert MacIntyre sticking his approach to 10 feet.

That's a great two-hole lead now for Europe with the world number one yet again up against it.

  5. Another hole, another Europe winpublished at 14:06 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 4UP (8)

A penny for Keegan Bradley's thoughts right now and his decision to send Harris English and Collin Morikawa out again today...

They almost end up up in the water in front of the green on the eighth and English can only get them to a knee-knocking five feet from the pin.

Rory McIlroy almost gets another birdie for him and Tommy Fleetwood but it just turns away at the last moment.

Pressure back on Morikawa... and it tells as he sends his putt sailing past the hole.

  6. Postpublished at 14:06 BST 27 September

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 1UP (6)

Patrick Cantlay schlaffs his approach from 220 yards into the right right bunker on the seventh.

    An opening for Europe.

To shouts of 'fore!' from the gallery, Tyrrell Hatton hits a bullet from an awkward spot at the roots of a tree down the right. Absolutely nailed that to the front edge.

  7. Big time Brysonpublished at 14:05 BST 27 September

    2UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (9)

Bryson DeChambeau shows up big time by draining a 16 footer on the ninth to secure the half after Matt Fitzpatrick had struck one in close to give Ludvig Aberg the chance to make a birdie.

All the pressure on Bryson there but he delivers to keep a healthy lead for the Americans at the turn. There's not much between these two though.

  8. Foursomes a doddle?published at 14:00 BST 27 September

Foursomes is a difficult format isn't it? That's what we are always told.

We've not had two hours of play yet today and there are birdies all over the place.

In match one the US have made three and Europe two and in the other three matches the US pairs have all made two birdies and the Europeans three per pair.

The games are not even at the turn.

And Europe have only made three bogeys in foursomes across both days so far.

    Sensational, sensational golf.

  9. Fleetwood and McIlroy flyingpublished at 13:59 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 3UP (7)

It might be messy, but that doesn't matter when you are sinking the putts.

More wayward play from the tee but, between them, Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy get themselves to just under 20ft from the hole on the seventh to try and save par.

It is also a bit messy from the Americans and Collin Morikawa can't save their par.

Over to Fleetwood... and in it goes!

For the second morning, this European pair are building up a strong lead against this American duo.

  11. Hatton redeems himselfpublished at 13:56 BST 27 September

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 1UP (6)

Patrick Cantlay for the three... he drops that in the front door with perfect pace.

Now can Tyrrell Hatton follow him in? Especially after that short miss on the last?

It's downhill and he is putting through his shadow. But he knows the one back is irrelevant.

    IN!

Beautiful pace. That was set off on the right line and never looked like missing.

  12. Scheffler saves a halfpublished at 13:52 BST 27 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (4)

Scottie Scheffler holes a great 17 footer to halve the hole, and that might just wake his game up maybe?

That's one of those that can be a great confidence boost, or you could see it that is the USA have to keep holing long putts just for halves then that could spell trouble.

  13. Postpublished at 13:52 BST 27 September

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 1UP (5)

Some serious action on that approach by Xander Schauffele to the sixth and it spins below the hole - further away than the Euros but arguably an easier putt.

  14. Postpublished at 13:48 BST 27 September

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 1UP (5)

Tyrrell Hatton sends his drive off the sixth into orbit. Felt like there was a bit of anger in that one.

The US have fought back in the last 10 minutes and these matches are beautifully poised.

  15. Two down!published at 13:48 BST 27 September

    2UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (8)

The tide is just turning a bit here as Cameron Young hits a brilliant tee shot on the par three that's stone dead and has to be given.

Matt Fitzpatrick hits a wonderful response, but Ludvig Aberg's putt catches too much of the right edges and lips out!

Aberg had a day of two halves yesterday; he putted beautifully in the morning foursomes but was poor on the greens in fourballs - there's been a bit of both already today.

  17. Well saved!published at 13:47 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 2UP (6)

Nice bunker play from Tommy Fleetwood to give Rory McIlory a chance to save par after his mistake.

Collin Morikawa sends a long putt up to the hole but can't make it drop.

Can McIlory redeem himself? Yes he can!

His putt on the first lipped out, but he gets more luck this time as the ball takes a wander round the edge before dropping in.

  18. US pull one backpublished at 13:47 BST 27 September

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 1UP (5)

I did say these things can turn round...

Tyrrell Hatton dribbles a weak effort in his attempt to match the US on the fifth and that slides past the left edge.

    Hole back to the US.

  19. Donald getting everything rightpublished at 13:44 BST 27 September

Yesterday was a tale of two Donalds. Today it is all about just one Donald and his team.

Europe have been sensational so far in these foursomes, and have only just made their first bogey - a sensational effort in this format.

  20. Rare bogeypublished at 13:43 BST 27 September

    1UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (7)

Cameron Young puts the US one up in this match after Matt Fitzpatrick leaves his par putt just inches short of the hole so it's a rare bogey for the Europeans.

That really stings to give away a hole to a bogey.
