Europe build lead on feisty second day at Ryder Cup

  1. 'We'll be ready'published at 13:40 BST 27 September

Luke Donald says Europe celebrated Friday's success, but is by no means complacent - and as you'd expect from this master golfing tactician is already formulating plans for this afternoon's fourballs.

"We celebrated yesterday because it was a great day for us but we know there's a lot more work ahead," said Donald. "Keep the momentum going.

"We have a plan depending on how this morning goes either way. I'm very confident that whatever happens, we'll be ready."

His team have certainly started pretty well this morning.

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 2UP (5)

Both pairs are well placed in front of the slope on this sixth hole, but it is a tight pin on this green with it sitting just three or four feet in from the right.

Harris English lands it nicely with his wedge but too much spin brings it back towards the front.

    What can McIlroy do?

Yikes. That is not the Northern Irishman's finest moment.

He tries to drive it low and it ends up straight into the greenside bunker.

This could be a hole back for the Americans...

    Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (3)

Europe keep the lead as the two teams make each other knock in short putts that they were ever going to miss really.

    Mind games kicking in?

  4. Postpublished at 13:32 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Young A/S Fitzpatrick/Aberg (6)

Not only did Bryson DeChambeau's ball not bounce into the trees but it bounced out and actually gave Cameron Young a decent shot at the green, albeit needing to cut it around the corner.

And it's now honours even as Matt Fitzpatrick is a bit loose when he goes long from the middle of the fairway. Short-game match coming up.

  6. US stay in touchpublished at 13:30 BST 27 September

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (4)

The US pair are just about hanging on match three.

Patrick Cantlay rolls in a birdie putt just to halve the fourth.

But they are staying in touch, and these games can turn round...

  7. Four in a rowpublished at 13:29 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 2UP (5)

Can Rory McIlroy take it? Of course he can!

A 22 footer, but it never looked like it was going anywhere else but into the cup.

That is four birdies in a row now for the European pair and they are really putting their foot on the accelerator - just like yesterday.

  8. Postpublished at 13:28 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Young A/S Fitzpatrick/Aberg (6)

Members bounce there for Bryson DeChambeau, who crashes his drive into the trees at the seventh but he gets a lucky bounce and stays in play nicely - when it could have gone anywhere.

  9. Europe ahead in anchor matchpublished at 13:26 BST 27 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Hovland/MacIntyre 1UP (2)

Robert MacIntyre rolls in a nice 20 footer to win the second hole for Europe to go one in front. The Scotsman played really well yesterday but suffered late heartbreak after one of the few times the crowd overstepped the mark a bit.

It's a confident start from him today though.

  10. Postpublished at 13:25 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 1UP (4)

Feels like Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy have settled into the match now.

McIlroy's tee shot lands in the first cut, while Harris English sends his left and in the rough off the fairway.

Nice approach from Collin Morikawa to land it on the green but still 30ft to the pin.

Even better from Fleetwood to land his inside of that and give partner McIlroy a look at a birdie on the fifth...

  11. Missed chance for Europepublished at 13:24 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Young A/S Fitzpatrick/Aberg (6)

Ludvig Aberg can't connect with a tricky but short putt on the sixth, and Bryson DeChambeau just taps in a tiddler for the half.

Europe probably should have given him that one but it never hurts to let the opposition have to make one, see if they get upset about it.

That has to go down as a missed opportunity for Europe though.

  12. Rory playing to the crowdpublished at 13:21 BST 27 September

How do you deal with thousands of Americans booing you and calling you all manner of names we simply cannot publish on the BBC?

Blow them a kiss of course!

Rory McIlroy is the pantomime villain at Bethpage this week but he's done really well up to now to largely not react negatively to most of it, and just embrace the nonsense.

  14. Europe remain in frontpublished at 13:16 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 1UP (4)

Tough third shot for Tommy Fleetwood here on the par-five fourth after Rory McIlroy's second shot landed next to the bunker in front of the green.

Superb touch from the Englishman, though, as he chips it to around three feet from the hole.

An excellent reply from Collin Morikawa, who lands his third shot mere inches from the pin.

Can McIlroy get the birdie and the half? He can and that is the slim lead kept intact.

Fair play to whoever splashed out on the giant European player heads.

  16. Halved in birdiespublished at 13:16 BST 27 September

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (3)

Tyrrell Hatton rolls in an eight-foot putt for a three. This Anglo-Spanish combination is on fire.

Xander Schauffele had hit it even close on the par-three third though, and Patrick Cantlay makes no mistake to half the hole.

    Top-class golf.

Two pretty solid pars for the half on the fifth, both just off the front of the green and both knocking it stone dead so not much stress about the finishes.

  18. Preferred lies again - but what does that mean?published at 13:12 BST 27 September

    Bethpage

With plenty of moisture on the ground again this fine Long Island morning, the organisers are allowing preferred lies.

That means the players can mark and clean their balls on the fairways.

Viktor Hovland welcomed the move, saying mud balls don’t make for a good spectacle.

It allows the pairs to switch balls if they wish - which takes away an intriguing part of Ryder Cup foursomes.

The top stars carefully select their balls on the basis of their style and whether they rely on more control, distance or spin.

Therefore they don’t like playing with other types of balls, leading to the captains having to think carefully about their pairings.

Different balls, chopped rough. Poor Bethpage has been tamed.

Scottie Scheffler will never be Tiger Woods. Nobody will.

But the comparisons between the world number one and the GOAT contender have been made regularly, on the basis of Scheffler’s vice-like dominance and ruthless ability to close out major wins.

Another parallel has emerged. Scheffler also can’t stamp his individual ability on the Ryder Cup pairings format.

Given another chance alongside his old buddy Russell Henley, the US side need their standout man to step up today.

  20. Euros double leadpublished at 13:10 BST 27 September

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (2)

    Tyrrell Hatton makes.

    Patrick Cantlay misses.

    Europe two holes up.
