Europe build lead on feisty second day at Ryder Cup

  1. Postpublished at 12:37 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy (12:26 BST)

Not an easy shot for Tommy Fleetwood after Rory McIlroy's wayward drive into the trampled down rough on the first... but he does OK.

His iron heads just off to the right of the pin and into the greenside rough.

Collin Morikawa has more of a formality and he lands it about 15ft behind the flag.

  2. All squarepublished at 12:37 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Young A/S Fitzpatrick/Aberg (2)

Role reversal on hole two as Matt Fitzpatrick almost holes his chip, using that unusual grip of left hand below right - it really works though!

Bryson DeChambeau then has to make a nice five footer for the half, which is does with minimal fuss.

    DeChambeau/Young A/S Fitzpatrick/Aberg (1)

Two fairways for the group, Ludvig Aberg goes first with his approach but he lands it a bit short and the spin takes it back to just resting against the collar of the fringe.

Bryson DeChambeau doesn't learn the lesson as he does exactly the same, only with much more spin and his ball zips off the green and dives into the rough.

Controlling spin with his wedges has been a theme for DeChambeau over the last year or so.

  5. Advantage USApublished at 12:31 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy (12:26 BST)

Not quite the start Europe and Rory McIlroy will have been hoping for.

Perhaps a bit of stiffness from the Northern Irishman as he sends his drive long but to the left and into the awaiting crowds next to the fairway.

A better strike from Harris English, however, as he sends his the more direct route over the trees on the right and lands it in the first cut.

The Americans will be the happier after those tee shots.

The weekend punters have arrived, it seems.

Without a doubt, the natives are much rowdier today.

Rory McIlroy is the target for pelters when he strides out onto the first tee.

The exact wording of the chant is not suitable for a BBC platform.

But it’s fair to say the New Yorkers tell him where to go. McIlroy laps it up, blows a kiss and laughs heartily.

  7. Here we go (again)!published at 12:27 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy (12:26 BST)

A sense of deja vu for these foursome pairings as they all walk out onto the first tee for the second day.

The European pair of Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy will be hoping for more of the same after their dominance yesterday morning, while Americans Harris English and Collin Morikawa will be looking for some kind of redemption.

As expected, plenty of cheers (and boos) as they are all introduced.

    McIlroy to get us underway...

I seem to be attracting them this week...

I've landed next to another American intent on booing every European shot. Matt Fitzpatrick might have been 300 yards away in the rough but he must have heard the jeers as he struck his peach into the first.

“Quit stalling,” bellows my new best mate moments before Aberg rolled it in.

I know we’re supposed to be impartial but I took great delight in celebrating that birdie to half the hole.

  9. Lively startpublished at 12:26 BST 27 September

It's been an electric start. The crowd are well up for this and that birdie-birdie start by the opening group was golf of the very highest order.

We could be in for a very special day if that's the tone being set.

  10. Match Twopublished at 12:26 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood & McIlroy (12:26 BST)

A quick rematch! Collin Morikawa and Harris English were a surprise pairing from Keegan Bradley, but the US skipper is doubling down and picking them again.

Sadly for them they're coming up against Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy again, who hammered them 5&4 yesterday.

Today's a new day, golf can change quickly and this US pair will be determined to make amends, but can they break down this unbeaten Fleetwood Mac partnership?

  11. Bringing the noisepublished at 12:24 BST 27 September

    Peter Scrivener

The practice putting green is on the walk from the media centre to the first tee. Bob MacIntyre was going through a one-handed drill as we zipped past.

The first tee is feeling a good deal rowdier this morning. The boos for Åberg and cheers for Bryson were delivered with a bit more feeling.

  12. Stunning!published at 12:22 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Young A/S Fitzpatrick/Aberg (1)

How about that then? Ludvig Aberg under all kinds of pressure and intimidation from this jacked-up home crowd but he goes through his process, thakes one look at the putt and bang - drains it for the half!

It was an electric start from the USA pair, but that chip from Fitzpatrick and birdie putt from Aberg were just out of this world - it's hard to overstate how good that was from the European duo.

    What a start!

  13. Great shot!published at 12:19 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg

Cameron Young hits a stunner on the first - landing it six fett beyond the flag and zipping it back to within a foot, that's a gimme three for the USA.

Matt Fitzpatrick digs out his effort from the rough and it's a splendid shot that settles about 10 feet away - Ludvig Aberg needs that for the half.

  14. We're off!published at 12:15 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg

Ludvig Aberg, sporting what looks a burnt orange shirt in the early morning sunlight, slices his tee shot badly off the first and it sails into the thick rough around the trees.

Bryson DeChambeau, with the USA in deep blue tops today, launches a drive high and straight and settles in the middle of the fairway.

Advantage USA off the first - as DeChambeau pumps the crowd up even more as he strides away. It started this way yesterday though...

  16. Another Donald masterclass?published at 12:10 BST 27 September

Deafening noise again on the first tee, but Europe handled it superbly yesterday. Luke Donald hasn't really put a foot wrong in either the last Ryder Cup or this one yet, and he's got a settled line-up for the foursomes.

Can Europe silence the noise again? Let's find out...

(This post is partly to build up some excitement, but really just because I just wanted to use this arty picture of the skipper)

  17. Match Onepublished at 12:06 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg (12:10 BST)

    Match oneImage source, Getty Images

Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg out first for Europe today, and they deserve that honour after taking down Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley 5&4 yesterday.

It's a tough ask today though, with Bryson DeChambeau smarting after losing twice yesterday but largely playing well, while rookie Cameron Young was one of few plus points for the USA.

Bryson's a fan favourite, Young is a New Yorker so this pair will have a huge following today - it's a tough opener for the visitors.
