The home fans might have left Bethpage yesterday with their tails between their legs, but the Americans are looking sprightly as they flock back this morning.

Especially the groups who are already swigging lager from cans on the walk to the course from nearby Farmingdale. It’s not even 7am here...

  2. Stats Quiz: Guess who?published at 12:02 BST 27 September

We often think of Team USA having the stronger individual players at the Ryder Cup, but strangely enough an American has only finished as the outright top points scorer in the event once in the last 13 Ryder Cups.

The honour has been shared a couple of times but only once since Corey Pavin in 1995 has one of Team USA been the solo top scorer, can you guess who that was?

The picture should be a bit of a giveaway...

Before the start of this tournament, Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose had combined for more career Ryder Cup matches played (59) than the entire American team (56).

The average of 4.7 Ryder Cup matches per player is their second-lowest for a US team this century.

Luke Donald has always been quick to thank his vice-captains and lean on their expertise, and in this respect they've got a huge advantage on Team USA.

He has former captains Thomas Bjorn and Jose Maria Olazabal, a furture captain no doubt in Francesco Molinari and also the stats guru Edoardo Molinari - plus Alex Noren.

And not only is Keegan Bradley a first-time captain, but Brandt Snedeker and Webb Simpson are vice-captains for the first time while Gary Woodland and Kevin Kisner have never even appeared in the Ryder Cup before.

They have just Jim Furyk with all the experience, as he's a former captain and player appearing in his 14th consecutive Ryder Cup, but in the heat of battle at Bethpage you'd imagine Donald's men could be key.

One of the highlights of Friday this one...

A pretty huge moment on the seventh hole from Ben Griffin in Friday's fourballs and an immediate response from Justin Rose is what the Ryder Cup is all about.

Friday very much felt like a tale of two Donalds.

We suspect Europe's captain Luke Donald enjoyed how things went in the opening two sessions a tad more than US President Donald Trump.

    USA 2.5-5.5 Europe

"Everyone's got a plan until they get hit on the nose."

US captain Keegan Bradley seems to have ignored Mike Tyson's words with his Saturday morning foursomes; he got hit on the nose yesterday, but has stuck to his plan anyway.

He needs it to come off or he will be in Hal Sutton territory.

He knows that though - he had the expression of a man who was about to miss his flight to his own wedding towards the end of Friday's fourballs.

  9. Saturday stat attackpublished at 11:45 BST 27 September

    • Saturday morning’s session has ended 3-1 to the home side in all of the last three Ryder Cups.
    • Europe have won 10 points in foursomes to the USA’s two since the start of the 2023 Ryder Cup, winning almost double the amount of holes as the USA (70 to 37).
    • In the last two Ryder Cups and the 2024 Presidents Cup the USA’s overall foursomes record is 5-16.

Rose clinches fourballs match with birdie putt

After a tight match against Bryson DeChambeau and Ben Griffin, Justin Rose gave it the big point at partner Tommy Fleetwood when he drained the winning putt on the 18th green.

Europe's eldest statesman is always good value - and he showed plenty of emotion on Friday.

For players who have played a minimum of 10 matches, Tommy Fleetwood has equalled Tom Watson’s highest points percentage record in Ryder Cup foursomes and fourballs.

The Englishman’s tally reads 8-2-1 (77.3%) which is the exact same as the American great with the best being Arnold Palmer with 16-5-0 for 76.2%.

  13. How's your luck Collin and Harris?published at 11:33 BST 27 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy (12:26)

What do you not need when you were whipped in Friday's foursomes and are the subject of criticism verging on ridicule?

To be given another chance by your captain... and get drawn against Fleetwood Mac.

Collin Morikawa and Harris English face Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood from 12:26 and the US pair are huge underdogs.

It's arguably Europe's strongest pairing and if McIlroy and Fleetwood get up early, it could be a long day for the home duo.

Unless, of course, they get shots on the odd-numbered holes, as one wag in the office suggested they needed to make a game of it yesterday...

  14. How many points to win the Ryder Cup?published at 11:31 BST 27 September

    Ryder CupImage source, Getty Images

With 28 points on offer across the Ryder Cup, a total of 14½ points is enough to secure victory. A 14-14 draw will see Europe retain the trophy as current holders.

In 2023, Europe won 16½-11½ against the United States.

The last Ryder Cup to take place in North America in 2021 ended with the US recording a 19-9 win.

  15. McIlroy's daypublished at 11:28 BST 27 September

In the morning, he and Tommy Fleetwood reprised their indomitable performance from the Ryder Cup in 2023, dispatching Collin Morikawa and Harris English in the foursomes.

  16. Scheffler strugglingpublished at 11:21 BST 27 September

Two matches and two more losses for world number one Scottie Scheffler who continues to struggle at Ryder Cups.

Scheffler is just the third top-ranked player to lose twice on the first day of a Ryder Cup - joining Ian Woosnam in 1991 and Tiger Woods in 1999 and 2002.

It means Scheffler has just a 2-4-3 won-lost-halved record in the event, which is just incredible considering how much he dominates on the PGA Tour.

And his stats in Ryder Cups are incredibly poor - losing by at least four holes in each of his three career foursomes matches, and of the 41 holes he’s played in foursomes he has won just THREE!

Also incredibly he's got almost the exact same points percentage at the Ryder Cup as Woods of about 39% - and there are a few more similarities in his as Tiger's Ryder Cup struggles.

Read more on how Scheffler and Tiger compare in their Ryder Cup woes.

Rahm booed on first tee as Ryder Cup begins

The Ryder Cup started with a raucous atmosphere with the USA receiving plenty of backing, and the Europeans a fair bit of stick.

Jon Rahm was the first to tee off for Europe in the foursomes early Friday morning and he did so with boos and jeers ringing in his ears.

  19. Saturday's foursomespublished at 11:12 BST 27 September

The schedule outlines the Saturday Foursomes matches with the following pairings and tee times (all times BST): 12:10: DeChambeau / Young (USA) vs. Aberg / Fitzpatrick (Europe) 12:26: English / Morikawa (USA) vs. Fleetwood / McIlroy (Europe) 12:42: Cantlay / Schauffele (USA) vs. Hatton / Rahm (Europe) 12:58: Henley / Scheffler (USA) vs. Hovland / MacIntyre (Europe).

Four more huge matches coming up today - including an all-star clash between Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton facing Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele.

And of course Fleetwood Mac is out again, can Rory and Tommy continue their fine run?
