Europe build lead on feisty second day at Ryder Cup

  1. 'It is managing emotions'published at 21:11 BST 27 September

In this cauldron, in this environment, it is managing the emotions isn’t it [by the caddies]?

Just trying to keep them calm. Keep them up. It is long days and mentally draining so it is about keeping them focussed, keeping them in the game.

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (11)

Scottie Scheffler chips up to six feet. He is out of sorts.

Prediction for you though; he will be sent out first in the singles, where he will play Jon Rahm... and against the form of the week, he will win 3&2.

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (10)

Earlier today we saw Jon Rahm hole a spellbinding chip out of the bunker and over at the 11th, he's sizing up another out of the rough.

This one squirrels away though - we'll let him off.

Over to the rest of this fourball who all have lengthy putts.

I'd love to have Justin Rose as my Grandpa.

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (11)

Fair approach by Bryson DeChambeau but it looks tawdry compared to the Euros.

Massive chance to go two up again for the English pair.

  6. 'Been throwing haymakers at each other'published at 21:06 BST 27 September

    Scheffler/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (11)

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
    BBC Radio 5 Live commentator

This has been a brilliant match to watch because they have been throwing haymakers at each other.

Four of the world’s best golfers and there have been birdies all over the shop here.

  7. Postpublished at 21:05 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (11)

Justin Rose is called 'Grandpa' by the crowd, shrugs that off and hits his six-iron WITHIN Tommy Fleetwood's approach.

Europe surely certain to make three on 12.

  8. Fitzpatrick responds after Burns drains long puttpublished at 21:05 BST 27 September

    Burns/Cantlay v Fitzpatrick/Hatton 1UP (10)

Oh my. What a putt that is from Sam Burns, who is one of the very best on the PGA Tour with the flat stick in his hands.

Burns is clearly pumped as he drains it from 36 feet but then has to watch Matt Fitzpatrick repeat the trick from 32 feet.

The Englishman cups his hands to his ears and is letting it all hang out this week. Not sure I can recall seeing Fitzy ever look so charged.

  9. Postpublished at 21:04 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (11)

Scottie Scheffler pushes that a bit long and right. Couldn't hook it enough from the left trees.

Tommy Fleetwood absolutely buttons a five-iron to five feet. That is as good as a golf ball can be struck folks.

  10. 'Lowry had to tell the European fans to calm down a little'published at 21:02 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (12)

I am in the thick of it.

What I notice is there is probably six or eight police officers or security who spend their whole time when the players are on the green looking at the crowd and their eyes do not deviate for the whole time.

Actually, for majority of time they were on the green, Lowry spent his time looking up into the crowd, and he had to tell the European fans just to calm down a little bit.

They were trying to drown the Americans out a little with their ole ole oles when Rory was about to putt.

Blimey. Bob MacIntyre is a brave fella.

The European star is sitting out of the fourballs, but is out among the group trailing McIlroy and Lowry.

Shouts come his way but nothing too offensive.

"Ah it’s alright," says the fair-skinned Scot sniffs. "All I get is shouts of ‘sunburn’."

Then he sees a group of his fellow Obanites - who have British tennis star Jamie Murray - with them.

He rips his pals for not making enough noise.

  12. Still all square in match onepublished at 21:02 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (12)

Rory McIlroy has the power but not the direction with an awkward putt on the 12th, to open a window open for Justin Thomas and Cameron Young.

Neither of them can take it, though. All square in match one with six holes left to play.

  13. Who's winning this session?published at 21:02 BST 27 September

All the groups are onto the back nine now.

So, score prediction time for this session.

Europe 4-0, 3-1 or 2-2 (halves included), thumbs up.

    USA 4-0, 3-1 or 2½-1½, thumbs down.

  14. Postpublished at 21:01 BST 27 September

    Burns/Cantlay v Fitzpatrick/Hatton 1UP (9)

Wonderful play from Tyrrell Hatton, who makes a mockery of those earlier 'hacker' jibes as he comes out of the right fairway bunker and runs his ball on to the putting surface at the par-four 10th.

The Englishman is actually closer to the hole than his team-mate Matt Fitzpatrick and both Americans, who were all playing from the fairway.

    Anyone fancy walking this gauntlet?

This is the tight track between the 11th green and 12th tee where noise - somewhat vitriolic - rains on the European players.

Note the numbers of police officers and security staff guarding McIlroy and Lowry.

Last time I felt this ferocity close to this was Cardiff away as a Leeds United fan. No coins being lobbed here thankfully.

  16. Atmosphere 'only going to build and build'published at 20:54 BST 27 September

DeChambeau loves it! He is fired up!

That is a massive putt for the USA. They have reduced the arrears.

The grandstand was in the perfect position for him and he knew that was going in when he hit it as he goes and fist pumps to the crowd.

I think over the next couple of hours, this atmosphere is only going to build and build.

  17. Spaun holes huge putt to halve Europe leadpublished at 20:53 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (10)

We have seen very little of Jon Rahm's group but they have just flickered back onto our radar because US Open winner JJ Spaun has just holed a monster at the 10th green.

A wall of sound greets his 45-foot birdie putt as it lands bang in the middle of the cup.

Both Sepp Straka and Jon Rahm have chances to tie the hole from closer but can't match it.

Europe's advantage halved in this match.

  18. Postpublished at 20:53 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (11)

Scottish Scheffler is way left off the 12th tee.

Bryson DeChambeau is pumped up but that was actually a beautifully controlled drive. Perfect spot and a long way down. Impressive from the US talisman

  19. 'This is the atmosphere you want'published at 20:52 BST 27 September

    Scheffler/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (11)

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup on BBC Radio 5 Live

The crowd’s been pretty good natured with this one and that was a great reaction from Bryson DeChambeau and as a player, this is the atmosphere you want, to be able to show off, hole these putts and celebrate with the crowd.

  20. BDC comes up trumpspublished at 20:51 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (11)

Outside chances of three for the European pair. Not made.

This is really all about whether Bryson DeChambeau can hole his putt.

He can. So the US are back to one down and BDC's veins are bulging out of his neck as he roars to the crowd in celebration.
