Chris: How does Rory come back from that man! Bryson didn't win it, Rory lost it there. Pressure, never underestimate it.

Paul: Im struggling to see how he recovers from that. Misses two putts less than 4ft when Bryson didn't have it all day. There's only so much pain a sportsperson can take.

Tony: Rory had it in his hands, but poor club selection on two holes cost him dearly.

It all fell perfectly for Rory McIlroy, just out of the spotlight enough not in the final pairing, but then getting on a back-nine run to take a two-shot lead late on in the US Open.

BUT, those two short missed putts cost him his fifth major and extends his wait to add to his tally, but just how much damage will it do?

He's come close before, but never really had this kind of moment where he has thrown it away right at the death.

So, do you think he'll be able to ever win another major? Let us know with those thumbs...

  4. DeChambeau bounces back to equal Kaymer's recordpublished at 00:22 British Summer Time 17 June

    DeChambeau wins US Open

While he only made two birdies today Bryson DeChambeau got the job done and equals Martin Kaymer’s record for the most birdies or eagles in a US Open at Pinehurst (15), set during his 2014 victory.

DeChambeau also becomes the seventh player to lose a major championship by one shot (or in a playoff) and then win the very next major.

He joins: Brooks Koepka (2019 US Open), Tom Lehman (1996 Open Championship), Tom Watson (1983 Open Championship), Jack Nicklaus (1975 Masters), Arnold Palmer (1962 Open Championship) and Bob Rosburg (1959 US PGA Championship).

Bryson DeChambeau is back in the bunker where he played that magnificent sand shot from earlier - the shot that won him the US Open.

And almost every fan around the 18th green has had a touch of that US Open trophy just as he promised, as well as an amazing golfer he really knows how to work a crowd.

  7. 'Unbelievable heartbreak' for Rory but 'as good as it gets' for Brysonpublished at 00:10 British Summer Time 17 June

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald writes: "As a golf fan that was epic to watch. Pinehurst was amazing. Such unbelievable heartbreak for Rory, but that up & down by Bryson DeChambeau on 18 was as good as it gets under that amount of pressure.

"Congratulations on your second US Open Bryson."

True to his word, Bryson DeChambeau is off around the crowd showing his US Open trophy off to them as he promised.

He's been a real fan favourite this week, partly because of his excellent golf but also partly because of his attitude, how he entertains them and his accessibility.

DeChambeau has been showing his emotions, showing another side to him on social media and he's cut a more humble and honest figure than perhaps in the past.

He's the people's champion this week, and now he's the US Open champion - and a worthy one at that.

"It hasn't sunk in yet but tonight I want all of you guys [the fans behind him] to somehow touch this trophy because I want you to experience what this feels like for me.

"You were a part of this journey this week, and I want you to be a part of it for the after party. I want you to be part of it at the afterparty."

That'll be some bar bill if Bryson DeChambeau is picking up the tab...

"And to Payne Stewart, the reason I went to SMU and the reason I wore that cap."

And on the fans: "I can't thank you guys for all the support this week. You are the best fans in the world and I can't thank you enough."

A teenage Bryson DeChambeau visited Southern Methodist University on a recruiting visit and found out that Payne Stewart had attended that institution and decided he would, too.

And on the 25th anniversary of Stewart's win at Pinehurst, on a final hole bearing a flag with his likeness, DeChambeau makes an improbable par to win the US Open. Written in the stars.

This one was right in his lap. He had the meltdown at the Masters and he bounced back to win the next one. But this is so far down the line.

It's the fashion of this one, the missed putts. Something big might have to happen now.

It's clear his game is there but there's something not right. I'm not down on Harry Diamond (his caddie) but someone like Steve Williams (Tiger Woods former caddie) would have got in his ear.

Overall, you have to say Bryson DeChambeau deserved another major title after his performances this year - playing well at the Masters then just missing out on the final green at the US PGA Championship.

This time, though, he played one of the best up and downs to win a major we've ever seen! What a fitting way to end a brilliantly dramatic final round today.

The American finishes with a round of 71, snapping a streak of seven major rounds of 69 or less, but do you think he cares one bit about that right now?

Four majors before the age of 25, only Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods had done that before.

It's a cruel game and it's given him an awful lot but at the very top of the game Rory's just found it too difficult to get over the line. He had this one.

It's a hot take but I don't see how he recovers from this.

Well, where do we start with that one? Bryson DeChambeau had it, then lost it, then won it again right at the death with an amazing bunker shot at the last bringing him his second US Open title.

Spare a thought Rory McIlroy though as two short missed putts in the closing three holes cost him the chance to end his long wait for a fifth major.

That will sting for a while.
