Rickie Fowler, a former Open runner-up, carded five birdies and three bogeys in a two-under-par round of 69.

An excellent start for the American, who is 36 years old now. Only seems like yesterday that he was the new kid on the golfing block.

  3. McIlroy on the green at ninthpublished at 17:58 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy -2, Fleetwood +1, Thomas -2 (8)

"Right, right" mutters Rory McIlroy as his approach shot to the green at the ninth starts to peel away from the pin. This looks like a two-putt job, but could be an outside birdie chance.

    Glover -4 (7)

    McIlroy -2, Fleetwood +1, Thomas -2 (8)

"GAWN RORY!" bellows a gentleman at the tee on the ninth as Rory McIlroy belts a dive straight down the fairway this time.

  6. Hatton settles for par at 10published at 17:50 British Summer Time 17 July

    Hatton -3 (10)

Called it! Tyrrell Hatton has hidden his natty shirt with a far calmer navy blue jacket.

He's taking aim from 12 feet for a birdie at the 10th but is gesticulating before it reaches the hole as he's hung it left of the cup.

    He'll stay at three under.

  7. Bezuidenhout eagles 12th to join leaderspublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 17 July

Christiaan Bezuidenhout bounces back from a bogey on 11 in the best way possible - with an eagle three on the 12th to move into a share of the lead.

The South African is one of five players now on four under par, three of whom are in the clubhouse with rounds of 67.

Justin Thomas almost holed his pitch on the fifth. He wasn't to be denied a second time. "I knew you had it in you!" yells an especially excitable fan.

We've reached the point at Royal Portrush when you don't need to be anywhere near Rory McIlroy to know when he's making a move.

You can tell the difference between a Rory roar and every other type of cheer from wherever you are on the course.

  10. McIlroy misses birdie puttpublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy -2, Fleetwood +1, Thomas -2 (8)

Raucous cheers greet Rory McIlroy as he arrives on to the green at the eighth hole.

McIlroy watches Justin Thomas chip in a quite brilliant birdie from off the green, but then misses his own birdie putt to disappointed gasps from the punters.

  11. Bogeys for Bob and Brysonpublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 17 July

    MacIntyre -2, DeChambeau +3, Rose -1 (9)

Bob is short-sided on the ninth so a flick out of the rough to 25 feet is about as good as it could get for the Scotsman. He's not knocking in the par putt though. First dropped shot but a solid front nine.

Justin Rose has a birdie putt from similar range. His ball grazes the right edge of the hole. The Englishman is not sure how he's missed that.

Bryson DeChambeau can't get up and down for par, missing with a 12-foot par putt.

  12. 'Hovland tinkering'published at 17:41 British Summer Time 17 July

    Hovland +1 (8)

Viktor took his time. Obviously the shot that he hit was worth it but he switched clubs four or five times, he backed off it three or four few times.

This wind right now, it's just a little bit of a breeze off his right shoulder.

Not too sure whether he’s going through a few technical issues with his swing - he's tinkered around with that lately.

  13. 'Rory feeling good'published at 17:41 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy -2, Fleetwood +1, Thomas -1 (7)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

He was watching it all the way, it was a brave shot but he's executed it perfectly.

I think he's feeling good from looking at him.

  14. Postpublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 17 July

    MacIntyre -3, DeChambeau +2, Rose -1 (8)

Scotland's finest is in a spot of bother down the right of the ninth, his ball buried in the thick stuff. And Bob MacIntyre compounds his error off the tee, pulling his second shot further right.

Bryson DeChambeau, from the other side of the fairway, goes flag-hunting and that's dangerous on the ninth with the flag perched above a steep run-off... and the American's ball does indeed scuttle off the green.

Justin Rose shows how it should be done, finding the heart of the green.

So Scheffler misses almost all fairways and ends -3?! Something wrong with course design of he can spray it everywhere off tee and finish 3 under par?

    Michael, Jersey

And to be fair to Scottie, he was pretty happy with how his long game went today.

"I actually thought I drove it pretty good - I don't know what you guys are seeing," he said. "When it's raining sideways, it's actually, believe it or not, not that easy to get the ball in the fairway. Thank you guys all for pointing that out!

"I felt like I hit the ball nice off the tee and really only had one swing I wasn't too happy with. Outside of that, I felt like I hit a lot of good tee shots, hit the ball really solid, so definitely a good bit of confidence for the next couple rounds."

  16. Spieth in troublepublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 17 July

    Aberg +1, Hovland +1, Spieth +4 (8)

Jordan Spieth has never missed a cut in 11 previous Open appearances but the signs aren't looking good for the 2017 champion here.

He's short of the eighth green in two and can't get up and down for par.

Ludvig Aberg is in a similar spot but makes his four, while Viktor Hovland misses a 20-footer for birdie.

  17. McIlroy has birdie chancepublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy -2, Fleetwood +1, Thomas -1 (7)

On this occasion Rory McIlroy manages to find the fairway with his tee shot at the eighth.

His approach shot is right on the money and bounces right need the pin before spinning back.

    A birdie chance.
