  1. Postpublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 14 June

    Hatton -1, Fleetwood +1 (2)

A big puff of the cheeks from Tyrrell Hatton as he strides off the second green. He was short of the green in two but chips up to eight feet and nails the par putt.

Tommy Fleetwood is a little closer but cannot close the deal. Shot gone.

  2. Bogey for McIlroypublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 14 June

    McIlroy -4, Schauffele +2, Scheffler +1 (2*)

Oh dear, McIlroy's chip leaves him five feet but while he was so solid on the greens yesterday he's missed this one and drops a shot early in his second round.

That's a mental mistake as McIlroy was stood on the fairway just 150 yards away for his second shot but overcooked it when the centre of the green was the safe play.

Xander Schauffele also makes his second bogey in a row after that visit to the waste area.

  3. DeChambeau bogeys the secondpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 14 June

    DeChambeau -2, Homa +1, Hovland +7 (2)

A challenging second hole for this group sees Bryson DeChambeau suffer an early bogey.

Off the tee, he and Viktor Hovland found themselves in the open bunker on the left side of the fairway.

Both found themselves off the left of the green after their second shots and while DeChambeau is left with 14 feet to save par after a solid chip, Hovland has a tap-in after an excellent chip on, which he takes for par.

DeChambeau's par save attempt whistles just past the hole, taking bogey that sees him drop a shot.

There is also par for Max Homa, putting off the green with his third on the par-four to put him in comfortable putting range for his fourth.

  4. Postpublished at 13:13 British Summer Time 14 June

    McIlroy -5, Schauffele +1, Scheffler +1 (1*)

Spot of bother for Xander Schauffele who finds the scrub off the tee and then his escape really snags in some long grass so his ball just trundles about 50 yards down the hole.

Rory McIlroy finds the green, but the ball spins back and falls off the putting surface and between two bunkers - I think the sand would actually have been a better result as these guys are so good out of bunkers.

  5. Postpublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 14 June

    MacIntyre E (2)

Robert MacIntyre has started off his second round with two pars to stay on level par and still very much in the thick of the action.

He'd love to play well enough to ensure he makes the cut (top 60 players and ties) and then head off to watch Scotland kick-off Euro 2024 tonight I bet...

  6. Par startpublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 14 June

    McIlroy -5, Schauffele +1, Scheffler +1 (1*)

Rory McIlroy just fails to convert from 11 feet for birdie on the 10th green, so he has to settle for an opening par, as does Scottie Scheffler.

Xander Schauffele starts with a bogey though as he flew through the back of the green with his escape from the trees which left an near impossible task to get down in two.

  7. First round statspublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 14 June

    Rory McIlroyImage source, Getty Images
    • Thursday's scoring average was 73.25, which is almost exactly the same as the first round scoring in 2014 at Pinehurst which was 73.231.
    • Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia both went bogey-free on Thursday, only one player had started without a bogey in the first round of the three previous US Opens at Pinehurst - David Duval in 1999.
    • There were 15 players to shoot under par in the first round, that's the same as in 2014 here.
    • 23 player shot under par in the first round in 1999 and just nine in 2005.
  8. Tricky pin on onepublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 14 June

The pin position on this first hole could turn into a bit of a talking point today. It seems to be right on top of slope with anything even slightly errant suffering a huge punishment.

We've already seen Adam Svensson hit his second into about 15 feet. It looked like his ball had stopped but it went into reverse gear and trundled back towards him off the front edge.

His playing partner Mark Hubbard fired his approach straight at the pin. It did have more spin on it but his ball too zipped back and off the front.

One to keep an eye on.

  9. Birdie for Hovlandpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 14 June

    DeChambeau -3, Homa +1, Hovland +7 (1)

Easy as you like as Viktor Hovland starts with a birdie. His approach into the first green will be up there for shot of the tournament.

Meanwhile, DeChambeau and Homa both get good distance with their birdie putts, leaving themselves was easy tap-ins for par.

  10. Aggressive start for Hovlandpublished at 12:51 British Summer Time 14 June

    DeChambeau -3, Homa +1, Hovland +8

Knowing he faces an uphill task just to make the cut, Viktor Hovland has attacked the flag in his first hole.

While Bryson DeChambeau and Max Home focussed on just making sure their approaches stayed on the green, Hovland went for the pin and it paid off.

From 121 yards out, Hovland's second shot has finished within inches of the flag and he will have a tap-in for birdie.

  11. Hatton bogeys firstpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 14 June

    Hatton -1, Fleetwood E (1)

Tyrrell Hatton said after his opening round that Pinehurst has the ability to bring everyone down to his level - in that he tends to get frustrated easily and this course will test the patience of even the calmest of players.

And the Englishman's patience is being immediately tested today. A six-foot par saver on the first slides by on the right. He's not quite sure how he's missed that. Bogey.

Playing partner Tommy Fleetwood in for a regulation par.

  12. An eight on the first for Hughespublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 14 June

    Hughes +6 (1)

Canadian Mackenzie Hughes has had an awful start to his second round at Pinehurst No.2.

Starting the day on two-over-par, Hughes has dropped four shots on the first hole, carding an eight on the par-four.

In an eventful first round on Thursday, Hughes carded an eagle, a birdie, three bogeys and a double bogey.

  13. Postpublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 14 June

    McIlroy -5, Schauffele E, Scheffler +1

Rory McIlroy had to wait an age to play his second shot while the green cleared - an early illustration of the patience players need at Pinehurst not just being focused on shots.

McIlroy hits a solid fairway wood that pulls up just short of the green, while Xander Schauffele carves his miles right over the gallery of fans and off into the trees.

  14. DeChambeau heading outpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 14 June

    DeChambeau -3, Homa +1, Hovland +8 (12:40)

Bryson DeChambeau will be looking to build on his brilliant three-under-par score of 67 as he tees off among the early groups today.

With four drives north of 350 yards in his opening round, the long holes at Pinehurst No.2 have really suited his game.

Max Homa starts the day after an opening round of one-over-par, while Denmark's Viktor Hovland is aiming for redemption after an eight-over-par opening round score of 78.

  15. Positive signs for McIlroypublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 14 June

    McIlroy -5

Thursday marked Rory McIlroy’s 51st round at the US Open and it was only the second time that he finished bogey free.

The only other occasion he managed that was in the first round in 2011, en route to winning that year at Congressional.

He also achieved the same feat at the 2014 Open Championship and the 2012 US PGA Championship.

Oh and he won both of them as well!

Can he keep that record going here this weekend?

  16. Round Two pinspublished at 12:37 British Summer Time 14 June

Here's where the flags are placed today - again some really tough ones tucked on the edges of these hugely slopey greens. This will not be easy.

  17. Rory tees offpublished at 12:33 British Summer Time 14 June

    McIlroy -5, Schauffele E, Scheffler +1

Rory McIlroy gets his second round underway at the 10th, this group starting on the back nine this morning, and the joint leader finds the fairway nicely on this 619-yard par five.

US PGA champion Xander Schauffele joins McIlroy on the short stuff, and even Scottie Scheffler, who couldn't buy a fairway yesterday, manages to safely send one down the middle.

  18. 'A really controlled round of golf'published at 12:29 British Summer Time 14 June

    McIlroy -5 (12:29 BST)

Rory McIlroy & Scottie SchefflerImage source, Getty Images

Rory McIlroy speaking after shooting a bogey-free five-under 65 to take a share of the first round lead: "I think I was saying at the start of the week, my approach at US Opens...I guess I've had some success by the sort of mindset that I've brought in, especially last year.

"The golf course is a little different to what it was last year, but still the same strategy, same mindset. Just trying to hit it into the middle of greens and giving yourself chances every single time, taking your medicine if you do hit it into trouble.

"My short game was good early on. I chipped in at five and had a really good up-and-down on six, another really good up-and-down on eight. But apart from that, I think I hit every other green. It was a really controlled round of golf.

"I enjoy playing in these groups. When you've been out here for, whatever it is, 16 or 17 years, sometimes you need a little extra to get the juices going, and being in a group like that definitely helps."

  19. McIlroy & Cantlay set the pace on day onepublished at 12:27 British Summer Time 14 June

    Rory McIlroyImage source, Getty Images

Rory McIlroy is the joint leader of the US Open alongside Patrick Cantlay after an intriguing first day at Pinehurst, North Carolina.

American Cantlay was superb in the early wave shooting a five-under 65 to lead by one from Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg.

Going out late, McIlroy plotted his way round a difficult golf course, keeping his card clean and looking unruffled as he birdied the 18th to match Cantlay's score.

It was one of the most stress-free McIlroy rounds you'll see actually, while world number one Scottie Scheffler struggled to hit a fairway never mind drop in many birdies as he toiled to a one-over 71 in the same group.

Anyway, you can read all about that and the fortunes of the likes of Tiger Woods, Bryson DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood and Robert MacIntyre in our report.
