How Europe retained the Ryder Cup on the 18th

  1. They couldn't, could they?published at 19:54 BST

Keegan Bradley, a big New England Patriots fans, has been citing Tom Brady's miraculous Super Bowl comeback victory as inspiration to his troops.

And don't look now but Team USA are turning up the heat at Bethpage looking for their own epic comeback. They couldn't though, could they?

  2. US on the marchpublished at 19:49 BST

Nobody of a European persuasion panic but...

Scoreboard: four red and two blue
  3. Scheffler gets aheadpublished at 19:49 BST

So Rory needs to hole this from the fringe for a half.

Bang on line... but short. Half a roll of the ball short.

It hangs on the edge and that's a loss for Europe.

  4. Morikawa hits the frontpublished at 19:48 BST

    1UP Morikawa v Hatton (5)

Another splash of red on that scoreboard as Collin Morikawa gives a huge fist pump as he sees a left-to-right 17 foot putt right into the heart of the cup to take the fifth hole.

The American is playing like this match, may count for something and if Europe are not careful it could.

  5. 'Rose looking tired and jaded'published at 19:47 BST

    3UP Young v Rose (12

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup on BBC Radio 5 Live

What a huge turning point. It did look as though Justin Rose might get it back to one down but now he’s three down.

He just looks a little tired, a little jaded today. Maybe all that wonderful golf he played yesterday and the first day is just catching up with him.

  6. Postpublished at 19:47 BST

    Scheffler A/S McIlroy (9)

Rory McIlroy's ball ended in very long, thick rough that surrounds a greenside bunker. Think of Tommy Fleetwood's hair and you've got the idea.

Turns out the Southport superstar's locks are tricky to chip from, because McIlroy's hosel got caught up in it and ends well short of the hole. In fact it's not even on the green.

Work to do for a five.

  7. Aberg level at the turnpublished at 19:46 BST

    Cantlay A/S Aberg (9)

Pars on the ninth sees Ludvig Aberg hit the turn all square with Patrick Cantlay - and the way the leaderboard is looking now this match could end up being pretty important.

  8. Postpublished at 19:45 BST

    Scheffler A/S McIlroy (9)

Rory McIlroy pitches his shot from the left of the 10th green to the right of the 10th green.

Never saw the putting surface. Problems here.

Scottie Scheffler pitches out safely. Five certain.

  9. Fitzpatrick maintains three-hole leadpublished at 19:44 BST

    DeChambeau v Fitzpatrick 3UP (10)

Bryson DeChambeau and Matt Fitzpatrick trade five-foot putts on the 10th green. Honours shared and the BDC revival just checked.

  10. Young three uppublished at 19:44 BST

    3UP Young v Rose (12)

Cameron Young hits from 12 feet and again Justin Rose can't find the target with the putter as he slips three behind and in deep trouble now.

New Yorker Young is doing the job he was sent out to do.

  11. There's always a moment in singlespublished at 19:43 BST

Two red, two blue, the rest all square

    Justin Thomas believes.

The US are wiping blue off the board all the time.

  12. Thomas claws it back levelpublished at 19:42 BST

    Thomas v Fleetwood A/S (11)

Justin Thomas has a spring in his step now.

The American has had an up-and-down round against Tommy Fleetwood thus far but a neat approach to the green at the 11th and he taps in from five feet to win the hole.

Thomas keeps a lid on his emotions but cannot resist a few hand slaps with the crowd on his way to the 12th tee.

  13. Spaun levelspublished at 19:41 BST

    Spaun A/S Straka (7)

Not good from the big Austrian on the seventh. JJ Spaun has two putts for the hole and uses them.

Back to all square in this game.

  14. 'First moments or incidents at the 10th'published at 19:41 BST

    Scheffler A/S McIlroy (9)

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live at Bethpage Black

McIlroy backed off his tee shot early on this 10th hole and pointed to someone in the crowd. So the first moment or incident in this match.

Luke Donald has been here with him and walked along. McIlroy had a word with the referee after what happened there as well.

We’ll just keep a eye on the atmosphere around the more boisterous parts of the course.

  15. Postpublished at 19:39 BST

    Scheffler A/S McIlroy (9)

Was sand actually. A good outcome. But that's another poor shot from Rory McIlroy. Work to do for his par.

Opening for Scottie Scheffler... but he urns that over long and left into the rough.

Really poor from the world number one.

  16. 'Scheffler and McIlroy digging deep'published at 19:37 BST

    Scheffler A/S McIlroy (9)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Bethpage Black

It’s a tiring week. They’ve both got the weight of the world on their shoulders. Russell Henley said that Scottie is carrying the team, and you can tell that he’s carrying that pressure.

Rory is probably just fatigued. It’s been an incredible display of golf these last couple of days.

It’s impossible for them to be fully fresh. They’re just digging deep in energy reserves and adrenaline and trying to carry that through.

  17. As it standspublished at 19:37 BST

Some blue leaks off the board.

Still nothing like the miracle turnaround the US need - but a bit of a momentum shift here.

    Four blue, two red
  18. Postpublished at 19:36 BST

    Scheffler A/S McIlroy (9)

Rory McIlroy was put off by someone in the crowd while on the 10th tee and was pointing them out to officials. Likely they've seen their last golf of the day.

Their antics may have worked though because McIlroy hooks his drive into the reeds - or is it the bunker. Looks sub-optimal wherever it ended up.

  19. Morikawa bounces back against Hattonpublished at 19:32 BST

    Morikawa A/S Hatton (4)

The pressure is on for Tyrrell Hatton as Collin Morikawa signs for an eagle on the fourth to draw level with the Englishman.

Hatton had a putt from 14 feet there, Morikawa from 10.

  20. Hojgaard still one downpublished at 19:31 BST

    1UP Griffin v Hojgaard (5)

Two pars on the fifth, with Rasmus Hojgaard rescuing the situation nicely after going wide off the tee into the left rough.

The Dane stays just one down.
