How Europe retained the Ryder Cup on the 18th

Sam: Shame about Viktor! Even though he’s not there, The Postman is still delivering his Envelopes for the European Team!

Andy: Never seen a team more together and focused on what they need to do. Inspiration comes from within and these guys are tough as nails which helps

Dessie: Just come off a Mediterranean cruise in Barcelona - with about 80% Americans onboard. They were very subdued - over the past few days, watching the golf on board the liner!

Carol: Respect to Europe throughout the three days of the Ryder Cup. The USA crowd have done their best to put them off their stride. But look there’re sportsmen they can handle it with another brilliant display of golf on this remarkable day! Good luck to both teams!

Ed: Matt Fitzpatrick to get the first point for Europe. 5&4 win

    Young A/S Rose (4)

Hole halved on the fourth after a lovely chip from Justin Rose gets him out of trouble, he just turns and gives a bit to the crowd, or someone in the crowd that may have said something.

Vice-captain Jose Maria Olazabal then comes across to have a quick word with Rose as he heads to the fifth tee - most likely a calming word and just a reminder to try and block out the crowd, not give them anything, especially with Europe so far ahead.

    DeChambeau v Fitzpatrick 1UP (2)

Not a great deal of difference between Bryson DeChambeau and Matt Fitzpatrick on the second, largely because the American ends up the rough.

Neither get particularly close with their second and it's a ultimately a par each and as you were.

    Thomas v Fleetwood 1 UP (3)

Tommy Fleetwood's short game is on song at the moment.

The 34-year-old has showed his composure with the putter while banking four points in the foursomes and fourballs in the previous two days and he looks to have the momentum at the moment.

He calmly putts from about sjx feet on the third to halve the hole with Justin Thomas and keep his nose in front of the American.

    Cantlay v Aberg (17:46 BST)

Cantlay v AbergImage source, Getty Images

Patrick Cantlay is an absolute menace in matchplay and has been among the best players for the hosts, despite picking up just 1½ points.

He'll be favourite against Ludvig Aberg, who has shown some great form in patches but has had mixed fortunes on the greens.

Aberg has shown great character for one so young, but he'll need a bit more than that as Cantlay is relentless and has won both his previous Ryder Cup singles.

  7. ‘Get in the hole’published at 17:49 BST

    Peter Scrivener

I guess you can legitimately shout “get in the hole” when Bryson DeChambeau is on the first tee at Bethpage. He’s said all week it’s drivable if the weather conditions are right.

Well it’s baking hot and that helps balls fly further. The whoops and yelps of delight follow his ball through the air and heads then turn to the tracer line on the big screen… cue more excitement as the ball ended up just short.

Fitzy is more of a plotter - fascinating contrast in style and personality coming up.

And we all know how that hole ended up for Bryson. What do they say about slow and steady?

  8. Poor putting startpublished at 17:48 BST

    Scheffler A/S McIlroy (1)

Rory McIlroy over-read that. It went absolutely gunbarrel straight, and thus missed right - because he had expected some borrow.

Scottie Scheffler doesn't threaten the hole in reply. That missed by an inch.

Tommy Fleetwood makes the green at the second hole in two shots and leaves himself with a putt from about seven feet.

The Englishman makes no mistake and Justin Thomas has no answer.

Another chunk of blue on the board.

    Scheffler v McIlroy

The American has 70 yards to the pin. Flights it beautifully onto the back tier and avoids to much spin. He already looks better than Fourball Scottie yesterday.

Rory McIlroy is 18 yards closer. Backs off when someone shouts something from the crowd, then with a half swing, drives that one forward with a low trajectory to within 10 feet.

A putt off. And not likely to be the last of them today in this match.

    Young v Rose A/S (3)

The USA have just never managed to keep the momentum so far this week have they.

There was barely a blade of spare grass round the edges of the first tee with tens of thousands wedged in but now Rory and Scottie have teed off, two-thirds of the fans have set off in pursuit.

A big match in many senses of the word.

  14. 'Fitzpatrick has to stick to his game'published at 17:42 BST

    DeChambeau v Fitzpatrick 1UP (1)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Bethpage Black

In match play you always prepare to expect the unexpected.

Matt knows he has to stick to his game. He knows Bryson is going to be hitting driver past him all day. It’s not something he’s unused to.

He’s just got to stay in his routines and try and beat him the old-fashioned way.

  16. 'Just going to be a great match'published at 17:41 BST

    Scheffler v McIlroy

    Jamie Donaldson
Ryder Cup 2014 winner for BBC Radio 5 live

Scottie is so chilled but hasn’t been playing the golf he normally does and it’s just incredible how good he is, how dominant he is to have not won a point so far. He’ll have something to prove.

Rory’s playing unbelievably having not lost a game.

Its just going to be a great match

  17. Postpublished at 17:40 BST

    Scheffler v McIlroy (17:35 BST)

Strains of the Cranberries' song Zombie - anthem of the Ireland rugby team - are heard from the stands just before Rory McIlroy sends that opening exocet just shy of the first green.

Scottie Scheffler pummels his opener to a similarly optimum spot.

    This is mouthwatering.

A sense of hunour from the DJ… “It started out with a kiss…” from Mr Brightside plays just as Rory McIlroy walks out to face world number one Scottie Scheffler.

Thankfully no expletive-laden chants directed at Rory today with the home fans, after naturally booing him turn to their standard ‘Scottie Scheffler’.

But the Ole’s take over as Fitzpatrick nails a hole-winner,,, “Drive for dough,” says one disgruntled local while another adds “how did we lose that hole”?

Both miss the green at the par-three third and produce so-so chips - but then Cameron Young misses from six feet for par, having landed that bomb on the first.

There's no chance of Justin Rose then missing from five feet though and he slots it in to level the match. Calm as you like.

  20. Fitzpatrick edges aheadpublished at 17:37 BST

    DeChambeau v Fitzpatrick 1UP (1)

Matt Fitzpatrick stiffs his iron to six feet. Great response from the Englishman to Bryson DeChambeau's power play off the tee.

The American will be putting first as well, as his chip and run comes up just over eight feet short and he hits that too hard, taking the break left out of the equation.

That will likely sting as Fitzpatrick is not missing from there and drops in his birdie putt to establish an early advantage.
