If anyone was thinking Viktor Hovland was settling in for a normal round after his first par of the day at the fifth, then I've got news for you.

He has blundered his tee shot waaay right off the sixth.

...Tyrrell Hatton, fresh off his down, up, down par on the last, fires in to about three feet. Saddier's scruffy start continues as his ball runs through the back of the green.

Jon Rahm perhaps in must-make mode after an untidy approach found the bunker at the 14th.

He's ended up seeking par from 11 feet and no, he's given it too much turn.

That is a real momentum checker for the Spaniard.

I must admit at no stage did it look like it was in.

Because of the pace he hit it, it did a full 360 around the cup - and that's always hard to take.

A penny for your thoughts Tyrrell Hatton. His birdie putt horseshoes in and out the hole. The emotions are kept in check, just.

Alex Noren leaked his approach to the fourth way out right but he played a delightful third to a fraction inside Hatton's ball and he learns from the putt to drain his birdie and he's suddenly two clear.

That's because Adrien Saddier is also a little ragged and fails to hole a chip from just off the green for a four. Par for the Frenchman.

He's judged it extremely well and will ensure he gets par.

Disappointment for Harry Hall though as a bogey drops him back.

Back to the fourth and the trials and tribulations of Tyrrell Hatton. The Englishman's ball didn't go out of bounds and he's advanced it back into the fairway with his second shot.

He's having a chat with a rules official about his ball. Hatton is claiming his ball is cracked, after bouncing on a tarmac road and therefore he can change it. The rules official is having none of it, despite Hatton's protestations.

So he gets back over his ball, 76 yards from the pin, and he spins one in to about six feet. Think the rules official might have been right Tyrrell!

Can Jon Rahm nudge closer to the leaders?

He's given himself another good opportunity from 15 feet but it skims just off line.

He'll stay three back.

Perfect tee shot from Rory McIlroy lands him plumb in the middle of the fairway to attack the 18th.

He doesn't really like it but it's landed on the green and will leave him 35 feet or so for eagle.

So far this week, he's been sloppy on the par fives. Not so today - four under so far, and eyeing more progress.

Viktor Hovland clutches his red putter and eyes up his four feet for birdie. Needs this you think.

In it goes. A rueful smile as he completes his early pattern to go bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie at the start of his round.

Four back - and there are birdies apiece for Harry Hall and Darren Fichardt too.

The fifth may seem a bit of a beast at 200+ yards for a par three, but the hole is cut towards the back of the green with a helping slope guiding the ball in.

Patrick Reed takes full advantage, knocking his tee shot in to about four feet. And that leads to a birdie.

Another birdie for Kristoffer Reitan - that's four in six.

He's three shots back of the leader at -13.

Eagle putt for Viktor Hovland from across the far side of the fourth green.

On it goes down the slope but it's not strong enough and will leave about four and a half feet for birdie.

Not the usual conviction in Viktor's game so far today.

Tyrrell Hatton hates this tee shot.

He told me before the tournament that so much of this course fits his eye but this one doesn't.

I'm a bog standard golfer but been lucky enough to play this a few times. I love that shot!

I'm not sure Tyrrell would appreciate help from me.

A few moments ago I was typing about the par-five fourth being an almost gimme birdie today.

Well, Tyrrell Hatton will do well to escape with a par after pinging his drive way, way, way right. It's so far right he's heading to Hampshire. He could well be out of bounds.

Aaron Rai's charge continues on the fifth. The par three holes is playing 206 yards today and the Englishman goes flag hunting with a doozy of an iron that leaves a four footer for birdie. And he duly knocks it in.

Three birdies in his opening five holes.

Currently 18 players within five of the lead.

This tournament is up for grabs.
