Looking at the odds for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, it isn't obvious that Galopin Des Champs is bidding to do something so rare.

Only four horses, including the legendary Arkle and Best Mate, have ever won a hat-trick of Gold Cups.

And yet the Willie Mullins-trained horse is the odds-on favourite for Friday's Gold Cup, which goes off at 16:00 GMT, and meaningful challengers seem thin on the ground.

So what makes Galopin Des Champs so special?

"I think he's got just lots of heart," Mullins told BBC Sport at his sprawling Closutton stables in County Carlow.

"He's obviously got athletic ability, he's better than average. But when push comes to shove in those last two furlongs, when you've got to dig deep, this guy seems to have reserves of energy.

"And it's also mental. It's his heart. He just gets down, you know, when the going gets tough, the tough get going and that's what he is. He's tough."

Rachael Blackmore won the Stayers' Hurdle aboard Bob Olinger to complete a Cheltenham Festival double on Thursday.

The 8-1 shot, trained by Henry de Bromhead, beat last year's winner Teahupoo in a thrilling battle up the hill.

"I'm very lucky to be on this horse. He is brilliant. He has so much speed and could use it," said Blackmore, who earlier triumphed on Air Of Entitlement.

Blackmore and Bob Olinger clinched a third Festival triumph after novice hurdle and novice chase successes in 2021 and 2022.

The pioneering 35-year-old jockey adds the Stayers' Hurdle to a winning CV that also includes the Grand National, Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, Champion Chase and Ryanair.

Meanwhile, Fact To File put in a bold display to win the Ryanair Chase for trainer Willie Mullins and owner JP McManus.

Johnnywho travelled like the second coming, but he landed hard on the second last. You could hear punters calling him on but the line came too soon.

What a finish from Daily Present! He seemed to come from nowhere and even managed to hold off a huge challenge from Johnnywho right on the line.

Walking On Air almost went after a very poor jump but it's able to carry on with around a quarter of the race to go.

Mint Boy unseats his rider at the ditch.

Gelino Bello has been pulled up as they make the turn to mark the half way stage.

Mint Boy is towards the back of the field at the moment.

Sine Nomine after that vet check has dropped in last, but looks pretty keen.

Johnnywho is sixth, seventh down the rail.

Alan O'Sullivan's Walking On Air is going steady in the middle of the pack. It's just about navigating the course at this stage.

Willie Mullins' Sa Majeste leads the pack but there's a very long way to go in this one.

Sine Nomine has been given the all clear and we're off as all clear the first jump.

Looks as though Sine Nomine got a bit of a kick down at the start and the vet has been called while we wait for this race to get going.

It's another false start, might as well continue the theme of the day.
