Athletes at the Winter Olympics in Sochi will have the freedom to make statements against Russia's anti-gay laws - but should not mount protests on the podium, says IOC president Thomas Bach.

The IOC's rules state "no kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted", but Bach said athletes were free to make their feelings known in press conferences.

"It is very clear that the Games shouldn't be used as a stage for political demonstrations," says Bach. "But on the other hand the athletes enjoy the freedom of speech so if in a press conference they want to make a political statement they are absolutely free to do so."

Sunderland release a statement in response to Paolo Di Canio's comments on the club's players.

The club statement reads: "Sunderland AFC would like to express its' disappointment in relation to the disparaging comments made recently by Paolo Di Canio, regarding the club and its players.

"The club is immensely proud of its players for the dignified and restrained manner in which they have conducted themselves publicly since Mr Di Canio's departure and it is particularly disappointing to read such comments when there are legal obligations in place to ensure such behaviour does not occur. The club is now considering its position with its legal representatives."

Pirelli will take special winter tyres to the first pre-season Formula One test to ensure teams get as much track time as possible if the weather turns cold.

Testing, which starts in Jerez on Tuesday with 10 of the 11 teams, has been brought forward from February because of the challenges posed by a new turbocharged V6 engine and accompanying energy recovery systems. Jerez is the only test in Europe, with the other two scheduled for the heat of Bahrain, before the season starts in Australia in March and teams can ill afford weather delays.

"Last year the teams lost some pre-season running due to excessively cold conditions in Spain: we even saw some ice on the track at one point," said Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew casts doubt over the future of Yohan Cabaye by admitting he is "not confident" the Frenchman will be at the club when the transfer window closes on Friday. The Magpies have already rejected a £14m bid from Paris St-Germain for Cabaye's signature.

Asked in a news conference if he was confident of keeping the 28-year-old at the club, Pardew says: "No, I'm not confident.

"I don't think any team not in a Champions League position or fighting for a Champions League spot could be."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will assess the fitness of midfielder Joe Allen in the build-up to tomorrow night's Merseyside derby at Anfield. The midfielder overcame a groin problem to feature against Aston Villa in mid-January but has struggled for fitness since. Meanwhile, defender Mamadou Sakho is still three weeks away from full fitness.

"It's just a case of assessing Joe on whether this game is going to push him too much and whether he's fully fit," Rodgers tells a news conference.

"What we don't want is another injury. Maybe if we had a raft of players, we could put him in and if he came out of the team we'd have someone else to put in.

England head coach Stuart Lancaster is excited by the possibility of selecting three uncapped players for their Six Nations opener against France in Paris. Uncapped trio Jack Nowell, Anthony Watson and Luther Burrell are all in contention to start at the Stade de France.

Lancaster tells a news conference: "I've never shied away from giving people without much experience opportunities. At some point you have to do it.

"This time two years ago I selected seven players with no caps for Scotland away. There is a balance to strike, but I've always been reasonably confident to pick inexperienced players if I feel they're ready."

"Thanks to Lazio and all the others clubs who wanted to sign me these last few days," says Anelka on Twitter. "See you this summer if I decide to continue, but the question is why should I leave my club and England?

"I'm happy here and I did nothing wrong, so now it's time to stay focused on my football with my club. I will try my best on the pitch like I always do."
