    Northampton Town appoint Chris Wilder as the club's new manager on a three-and-a-half-year contract. The former Alfreton Town manager resigned as Oxford United boss on Sunday, freeing him up to succeed Aidy Boothroyd who was sacked in December.

    "I know it has been a frustrating time for our supporters and I apologise for that, but I make no apologies for taking our time and making sure we made the right appointment," says Northampton chairman David Cardoza.

    The new president of Barcelona Josep Maria Bartomeu plays down rumours that Lionel Messi is considering a £207m (250m euro) move to Paris St-Germain, reports reported by French paper L'Equipe., external

    Speaking to Spain's Canal+ TV, Bartomeu said: "I doubt that Messi wants to leave Barca, he is happy here. He came at the age of 13 - he was practically born here. I always hear that he wants to finish his career at Barcelona."

    It was under a week ago that West Ham co-chairman David Gold said the club were in a low-point in their history as they battle relegation. The Hammers have won just once in nine matches but boss Sam Allardyce is in upbeat mood, buoyed by the signing of Antonio Nocerino and fewer players in the treatment room.

    "Antonio is a box-to-box midfielder who's capable in all areas of the pitch," says Allardyce.

    "When you come into this league you need intelligence and he has that. It's about what's in between the ears and he's a very experienced player.

    "Things are looking good on the injury front. We've got our defensive players back into training, including Winston Reid."

    West Ham United sit in the Premier League relegation zone and face a trip to Chelsea on Wednesday night. The Hammers, have however, signed Roma striker Marco Borriello and AC Milan midfielder Antonio Nocerino on loan until the end of the season. Manager Sam Allardyce is conducting his news conference ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge.

    "Antonio is very excited to play in the Premier League. He's wants to get into the Italy squad for the World Cup," says Allardyce.

    "He is fine to be selected as soon as possible, whereas Marco needs a bit of time as he hasn't played a game for six weeks."

    Premier League leaders Arsenal travel to Southampton on Tuesday evening off the back of seven wins in a row. Manager Arsene Wenger says he has one or two fitness concerns ahead of the match.

    "We have a doubt about Jack Wilshere but Ramsey, Arteta and Vermaelen are back in the squad," says Wenger.

    "Oxlade-Chamberlain is not fully fit but he is getting closer. I haven't decided whether he will start tomorrow."

    Baines, who was strongly linked with a move to Manchester United during the summer transfer window, joined Everton from Wigan in 2007 and has made more than 200 appearances since. His new deal will keep him at the club until 2018.

    "He is so important with his daily standards and with the younger players," says manager Roberto Martinez.

    "His best is still to come. From every angle you look at it, to have Leighton here for the long term is an incredible boost."

This one is, however, a bit different with the small matter of a Merseyside derby taking place on Tuesday night. Things kick off on a sombre note though as Martinez reacts to Bryan Oviedo's double-leg break in the win over Stevenage on Saturday.

    "Bryan is a really positive guy and has been overwhelmed with the thoughts of every Evertonian," says Martinez. "Today is an important day with surgery.

    "We'll keep in mind the incredible level he showed this season and we can't wait to get him back. He's been very important for us.

    "They say these things take five to six months, but I think Bryan may be less. We want to help him get back in time for World Cup."

    Wales international Dan Evans agrees a three-year contract with the Ospreys. The Newport Gwent Dragons full-back will move from Rodney Parade at the end of this season, the Ospreys have announced.

    In Melbourne on Sunday we saw Stanislas Wawrinka land his first Grand Slam with victory over an injury-struck Rafa Nadal in four sets at the Australian Open. Wawrinka became the first player to win a major outside of the world's big four players - Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer - and former British number one Andrew Castle thinks it's deserved.

    "Did I see him winning a Grand Slam, not really, but the manner in which he beat Berdych and Djokovic was impressive, as was the manner in which he put down an ailing opponent yesterday," Castle says on BBC Breakfast.

    "I didn't expect it but he clearly deserves it. It's not easy to put away an injured opponent. Some people are saying Nadal was faking his injury; he would never do that and Stan got rid of him. The day was Wawrinka's and there are many who think he can go on and win a lot more."
