Ross County's new faces

Midfielder Filip Kiss returns to Ross County on a season-long loan from Cardiff City. The 23-year-old Slovakian scored six goals in 17 goals for the Staggies last season, having arrived at Victoria Park in January.

Also joining up is 25-year-old left-back Uros Celcer, with the Slovenian having left Parma without making an appearance for the Serie A club. Teenage midfielder Rosario Latouchent arrives from France.

MK Dons signing

MK Dons sign midfielder Samir Carruthers from Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee, following his loan spell at the club last season.

The 21-year-old, who has signed a three-year deal, featured 28 times for the League One side in 2013-14 before a knee injury curtailed his campaign.

He made three substitute appearances during his four years at Villa Park.

"It's exciting and it's what I wanted," said Carruthers, who is currently sidelined with a thigh injury.

Benzema stays at Real

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema signs a contract extension to keep him at the club until 2019.

The 26-year-old France international joined Real in 2009 from Lyon and has scored 72 goals in 159 appearances for the La Liga club.

Done deal for Forest

Nottingham Forest sign winger Michail Antonio from Sheffield Wednesday for a fee of around £1.5m.

The 24-year-old has signed a three-year deal and told BBC Radio Nottingham he wanted a new challenge and the chance to work with Reds boss Stuart Pearce.

"At Sheffield Wednesday I thought I'd got a bit to comfortable," he said. "In football you have to push boundaries and to take risks.

"I feel I can learn a lot from the boss and he can make me a better player."

Lions complete victory

England Lions beat Sri Lanka A by 51 runs at Taunton as the visitors collapse from 185-3 to 288 all out in pursuit of 339-5. Ravi Patel took 3-71, with Harry Gurney, Boyd Rankin and Ravi Bopara all taking two wickets apiece. Earlier, Alex Hales scored a century for the hosts.

Forest close in on Assombalonga

Nottingham Forest are on the verge of sealing a £5.5m deal for Peterborough United striker Britt Assombalonga, BBC Radio Nottingham reports.

The 21-year-old has been in talks with Forest and is set to sign for a club-record fee after a medical. Assombalonga scored 33 times in 58 appearances for the League One side last season and has attracted interest from Premier League clubs

Man City confident on Mangala

Manchester City remain confident of securing a deal to sign Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala for about £32m.

The 23-year-old Frenchman came close to joining City in January and has been heavily linked with a summer move. Mangala visited Manchester last month and was inadvertently pictured in a 'signing' video on the club's website, but the move is yet to be completed.

BBC Sport understands that City are not concerned by the delay, which relates to Mangala's third-party ownership.

Fulham's challenge

Fulham's new right-back Tim Hoogland says their squad must gel quickly if they are to make an immediate return to the Premier League. The 29-year-old is one of nine new arrivals at Craven Cottage this summer.

"I think it is always sad when you are relegated. I think Fulham is a big club and have to be in the Premier League," he told BBC London. "We have many new players. Maybe the first games will not be the football we want to play but we have to win them."

Ameobi's Nigeria decision

Newcastle forward Sammy Ameobi has opted to play for Nigeria. The 22-year-old has represented England at under-21 level but will follow his older brother Shola's lead and play for the country of their parents.

"It wasn't a difficult decision because I decided to follow my heart and I think it's the right thing to do," Ameobi told BBC Sport. "I saw Shola at the World Cup and for him to play at a major tournament like that is a big motivation."

Bayern to sign Liverpool keeper

Bayern Munich agree a deal to sign Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina. The German champions have revealed Reina will have a medical after they agreed a fee with the Reds and personal terms with the 31-year-old Spain international.

'Canaries should have kept striker'

Norwich City should have kept striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel for another season, according to Canaries legend Iwan Roberts.

The 25-year-old has joined St Etienne on a season-long loan after scoring just one goal for the club following his £8.5m move last summer.

"I would have kept him for another year," Roberts told BBC Radio Norfolk. "I would have given him an opportunity to score a few goals. He's probably more suited to Championship football."

Cook considered position

Alastair Cook says he questioned his position as England captain in the past few weeks before deciding he "could not live with" walking away from the job.

Cook, 29, went into the third Test with India at Southampton under pressure to stand down, short of runs and leading a team without a Test win in a year.

But the England captain enjoyed knocks of 95 and 70 to help his side to a solid 266-run win in the third Test.

"I still feel as if I have a lot to give," Cook said. "It's a great job to have, the England captaincy. To throw it away just as it gets really tough. I couldn't live with that decision at that time."

Terry in the runs

In county cricket's One-Day Cup, Hampshire amass 275-9 in their 50 overs against Leicestershire - Sean Terry top-scoring with 63 and Michael Carberry making 61. James Sykes takes 3-34 with the ball.

Sussex post a similarly high score against Surrey - reaching 289-8, with Ed Joyce and Craig Cachopa both scoring 58.

Meanwhile, at Canterbury, Kent bowl out Glamorgan for 209 despite Christopher Cooke hitting 73. Australian Doug Bollinger takes 5-35.

Schurrle's delight

Germany World Cup winner Andre Schurrle has been talking about his momentous summer on his return to pre-season training with Chelsea.

Speaking to the club's official website, he said: "It's an amazing feeling, I feel very good. I've had a nice holiday after some big celebrations but it's nice to be back and now I'm highly motivated to do big things with Chelsea this season.

"It took a couple of days, even weeks, to realise what happened. In Germany the fans are so happy, the whole country was behind us and it was an amazing feeling.

"On our parade, there were more than one million people on the streets of Berlin and following our bus through the city. They were all celebrating with us and we had lots of fun, we were singing and dancing, and it was an amazing feeling to see so many people so happy."

IPC Swimming European Championships

Britain's Ellie Simmonds had to settle for silver in the S6 50m freestyle after she was beaten by 0.04 seconds by Ukraine's Yelyzaveta Mereshko.

"It was a great race and it's good to have new challengers coming through," said the 19-year-old four-time Paralympic champion. "I set two new personal bests in the event in the heat and the final and she pushed me all the way to that."

There was also silver for Sascha Kindred in the men's S6 50 free.

Dufner's pain in the neck

Defending champion Jason Dufner is pleased to have recovered from a neck injury in time to play in this week's US PGA at Valhalla.

"It's just an arthritic, degenerative issue that I'm probably going to be dealing with for a good bit," Dufner said. "If I can get six to eight weeks of a strength, rehab, resting programme, I feel like I can get better, but it's just something that's not going to change. I'm going to have to deal with it.

"It has been discouraging. I'm not swinging the way I would like to swing and I'm limited in what I can do."

Murray reaction

Andy Murray, speaking to Sky Sports after beating Nick Kyrgios in straight sets: "Nick's obviously got a lot of confidence after Wimbledon (where he beat Rafael Nadal) but I tried to play with a lot of variety. That's how I play my best tennis and it worked out today. We have been working on all aspects of my game in recent weeks - I served well today and that was important, and my legs are strong. I'm moving well around the court."

Dons wary of Sociedad

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is anticipating another tough night when Real Sociedad visit Pittodrie in the second leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie.

Sociedad lead 2-0 from the first leg, and McInnes said: "Here's hoping they take their foot off the gas but I wouldn't imagine so. We can't bank on it

"All we can do is put a bit of doubt in their heads by the way we play. They were really up for the game over there and I wouldn't expect anything different from them."

Murray well on course in Toronto

Done deal

Notts Countysign former Sheffield United midfielder Elliott Whitehouse on a one-year deal after he impressed while on trial.

The 20-year-old, who was released by the Blades this summer, had spells on loan at York and Alfreton last season.

Rochina leaves Rovers

Spanish forward Ruben Rochina leaves Blackburn Rovers to join Granada on a four-year contract.

The 23-year-old joined Rovers from Barcelona in 2011 and made 54 appearances during his time at Ewood Park, scoring 11 goals. Blackburn did not announce whether they received a fee for the player.

Saints sign Taider, but lose Osvaldo

Southampton announce the arrival of Algeria midfielder Saphir Taider on a one-year loan from Inter Milan, with striker Dani Osvaldo heading in the opposite direction on the same basis.

"He can play as a controlled midfielder, but he can also move up around the box and up front, which is a good thing for a coach or manager because it brings more possibilities to the players in the team," said Southampton manager Ronald Koeman

"He brings competition to the squad."

Done deal

Portsmouth sign Millwall defender Paul Robinson on a one-month loan deal. The 32-year-old centre-half has made 362 appearances for the Lions since his debut in 2002.

"He's an experienced Championship centre-back - and that's an area where we're a bit light on numbers," Pompey boss Andy Awford told the club website.

Done deals

Blackpool sign former Nottingham Forest striker Ishmael Miller on a permanent deal and Everton midfielder John Lundstram on a season-long loan.

Free agent Miller, 27, who spent much of last season on loan at Yeovil, joins the club on a one-year contract with the option of a further 12 months. Lundstram, 20, has had previous loan spells at Doncaster, Yeovil and Leyton Orient.

They are set to make their debuts when Blackpool begin the Championship season at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Gold for Millward

England's Euro 2020 boost

England's bid to host the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 at Wembley could be unopposed, with Munich thought to be considering dropping its rival bid.

The German football association (DFB) may only bid for Munich to host group games in order to strengthen Germany's bid to host Euro 2024.

"Our decision is open," said DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach. "We have an excellent relationship with the FA and we are thinking about how we can support the other association."

Owls sign Red Star defender

Sheffield Wednesday sign free agent defender Dejan Kelhar on an initial short-term deal, subject to international clearance. The Slovenia international, 30, moved to Hillsborough on trial during pre-season after leaving Red Star Belgrade. He played 15 matches last term as they clinched Serbia's Super Liga title.

Feyenoord dream factory

Confident Fowler

US and British Open runner-up Rickie Fowler, seeking a breakthrough first major title at the US PGA at Valhalla this week, is confident of more success.

The 25-year-old American, who also shared fifth at the Masters, said: "This year has definitely been the most comfortable I've felt in the majors. I think the more I can put myself in contention on Sunday, and possibly in the final group, I'll just get more and more comfortable."

Campbell's plea to relay team

Britain's new breed of sprinters must end the "friction" between rival camps to win relay gold at the European Championships, according to Darren Campbell.

Two training groups of British sprinters clashed earlier this year after months of acrimony, before Team England claimed a silver finish at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

"I think there's a little bit of friction at times between the boys, but we always tried to stay away from that - it can't work," said Campbell, who claimed Olympic relay gold in Athens in 2004 with Devonish, Gardner and Mark Lewis-Francis.

"We were rivals, but we didn't take on the personal issues of our coaches or whatever. Collectively you've got to come together as a relay team, so you can't have disharmony, it can't work - because the relay's all about trust.

"I think the current crop have the ability to break our European record, they have the ability to run a lot, lot quicker."

Garcia in no hurry

Sergio Garcia, who has endured 10 top-five finishes at majors without ever lifting a trophy, says he feels no sense of urgency about collecting a breakthrough title in this week's US PGA Championship at Valhalla.

"I've always wanted to win at least one, but I would never say I felt urgency about it," Garcia said. "But like I've always said, if I get to 45 and I haven't won one, then I'll probably start worrying a bit more. But hopefully that won't happen."

The 22-year-old, who controlled the ball with his chest before sweeping a volley past goalkeeper Sergio Romero, told Bild newspaper: "You don't really think very much when you're in a situation like that.

"I could try to describe what happened but only after taking a look at the replay myself. In the match it all happens intuitively."

Sinfield back for semi-final

Warrington coach Tony Smith says it would have been unfair if Leeds captain Kevin Sinfield had been suspended for their Challenge Cup semi-final.

Sinfield was sent off for the first time in his career during a 24-24 draw with Castleford Tigers last month. The England skipper has completed a two-match ban and is free to face the Wolves at Langtree Park on Saturday.

"Any more than two games with his impeccable record would have been wrong," said Smith.

Andy in Armagh, via 81111: Ezequiel Garay moved from Benfica to Zenit St Petersburg for just £4.5m last month. He was in great form for Benfica last season, especially in Europe, and he had a solid showing at this summer's World Cup for Argentina. It's a shame he's gone to Russia, he would have been a great addition to the Premier League.

Done deal at Gigg Lane

Joe Thompson signs a one-year deal at Bury, just seven weeks after being given the all-clear from cancer. The 25-year-old midfielder's contract at Tranmere Rovers expired at the end of June and he has been training with the Shakers for much of pre-season.

Thompson was diagnosed with nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's lymphoma last October and later underwent a six-month course of chemotherapy.

Bury have also signed ex-Northampton left-back Joe Widdowson.

Mutch thanks former club Cardiff

Madrid-based Spanish daily newspaper ABC claims that Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria is being fought over by Monaco and Manchester United.

It claims that while manager Louis van Gaal is a fan of the 26-year-old Argentina international, Manchester United are yet to meet the Real's £44m asking price and Di Maria's demands of £6.3m in annual wages.

Paris St-Germain haad been thought to lead the chase for Di Maria, but are struggling to sell anyone to make room in their squad and avoid falling foul of Financial Fair Play.

Froch v Groves II breaks records

The boxing rematch between Carl Froch and George Groves at Wembley Stadium in May is officially Britain's biggest grossing fight, according to the Daily Mail.

Total income from the fight was more than £22m, with the victorious Froch earning £8m and Groves taking home £2m.

Coady set for Huddersfield switch

Coady spent last season on loan at Sheffield United.

Carberry in the runs

There are three games under way in county cricket's One-Day Cup.

Denton's setback

Scotland and Edinburgh back rower David Denton is ruled out for at least three months with a hamstring problem.

The 24-year-old sustained the injury in training and will be a doubt for Scotland's autumn Test series, which begins against Argentina on 8 November.

Vernon's apology

English 5,000m runner Andy Vernon apologises to Scotland's Lynsey Sharp after a Twitter row over her winning silver in the Commonwealth Games 800m.

Sharp, 24, finished second in Glasgow on Friday, less than a day after being on a hospital drip because of illness. Vernon was critical of her reaction to her performance in several comments on the social media website.

But later Vernon, 28, apologised and tweeted: "What started as a joke got out of hand."

Cavendish to return on 12 August

Mark Cavendish, who has been out of action since a crash at the end of the first stage of the Tour de France in Harrogate, will miss the London Classic on 10 August, but return to action in the Tour de l'Ain in France on 12 August.

"Tour de l'Ain will be important to see where I am at with my training and recovery from my injury, and also as a bit of a test at competition pace," Omega Pharma-Quick Step Cavendish, who dislocated his shoulder in his fall on the Grand Depart, said.

"The rest of my program will be decided 100% after Tour de l'Ain depending on how I feel during that race. "

McIlroy on way to 'greatness'

Rory McIlroy is "on his way to greatness" heading into the final major of the year, according to former European Ryder Cup skipper Colin Montgomerie.

McIlroy is the hot favourite for the US PGA Championship, which starts at Valhalla in Kentucky on Thursday. The 25-year-old is fresh from dominant victories at the Open and WGC Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

"When he plays well, he is the best player in the world," Montgomerie told BBC Sport. "We have a rightful number one in the world, with all respect to everyone else.

"When he plays his best, he wins. I could have said the same about Tiger Woods in the year 2000 when he was proving it. Now McIlroy is proving it as well."

England captain Alastair Cook says Steven Finn will give the England bowling attack a different dimension if he is selected for Thursday's fourth Test against India at Old Trafford.

Finn has not played a Test for England since the opening match of last summer's Ashes series, as he battled problems with his bowling action.

"It's been a tough six months (for Finn) to fight through it," Cook said. "But he will be a stronger bloke for it.

"He gives us something different (in terms of his height and bounce), and it's nice to add him to the pile of fast bowlers."

England captain Alastair Cook says that he would rather James Anderson was involved in the odd scrape than change his abrasive personality on the field and lose the edge to his game.

"We also want to play competitive cricket, we don't want it to be too nicey-nicey and everyone just saying we're playing in the right spirit. There's always that muddied line," said Cook.

"There's little bits where Anderson might have overstepped the mark occasionally throughout his career, but you'd rather him be on the line than too passive."

'Aggression good for the game' - Dhoni

India captain MS Dhoni says that aggressive characters like England bowler James Anderson are good for the game, but umpires must be ready to intervene if they "cross the line".

Anderson was cleared of abusing and pushing Dhoni's team-mate Ravindra Jadeja during the first Test between the teams at Trent Bridge earlier this summer.

"What is important is to realise that strong characters are needed in the game, but umpires need to step in when the line is crossed," said Dhoni.

Swansea & Utrecht at loggerheads

Swansea and FC Utrecht are embroiled in a dispute over the proceeds from Michel Vorm's transfer to Tottenham, according to the Daily Mail.

The Dutch club inserted a 30% sell-on clause into the deal that took the goalkeeper to the Liberty Stadium in 2011 and believe they are entitled to more money after his switch to White Hart Lane this summer.

The Daily Mail reports that Swansea believe Vorm moved to Spurs as part of the deal that saw midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson head in the opposite direction and, as such, they do not owe Utrecht anything.

Howard Webb ends refereeing career

Howard Webb ends his 25-year career as a referee to become technical director of the referees' body - the Professional Game Match Officials Limited.

Webb has taken charge of more than 500 Premier League games and officiated both the Champions League final and the World Cup final in 2010.

"Refereeing has given me so much and I think it's important that match officials who have had the rewards remain in the game to pass on their knowledge," said Webb.

"I also have much more to learn about the business of refereeing and I believe the best place for me to do that is with PGMOL."

Manquillo completes Liverpool move

Liverpool sign Atletico Madrid right-back Javier Manquillo on a loan deal.

The 20-year-old is manager Brendan Rodgers' seventh signing of the summer.

"When they tell you Liverpool want to sign you, I think like any player, you are going to be absolutely amazed and you don't think of anything else than going straight there," said Manquillo.

"It's a team that nowadays, as I said before, any player would want to be a part of."

Dortmund 'angered' by Bayern

Borussia Dortmund react angrily to Bundesliga rival Bayern Munich's attempts to sign star forward Marco Reus.

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has told German media that Reus has a buyout clause in his contract with Dortmund, which could see the player leave Dortmund next year for a set fee of £20m, about half of his estimated market value.

Dortmund's chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke says his club has noted with a "certain anger" Rummenigge's statements that will "damage the already tense relations" between the two clubs.

Jessica Stretton, from Hemel Hempstead, wins individual archery gold at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports World Junior Games in Stoke Mandeville.

The 14-year-old was the youngest competitor in the field of under-23 athletes. Stretton, who has cerebral palsy, was only introduced to archery two years ago but, as well as shooting three personal bests during the competition, her score would have bagged her a bronze at this year's European Championships.

Ricciardo 'one of the best'

Lewis Hamilton believes Daniel Ricciardo is one of the best drivers in Formula One at present following his impressive performances this season.

Other than Hamilton and his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, Ricciardo is the only driver to win a grand prix, taking the chequered flag in two of the 11 races to date, propelling him to third in the drivers' standings.

"He's been driving fantastically well from the beginning of the year," said Hamilton. "It's not only now, but through the whole year he's shown his capability and is going from strength to strength.

"He's not only one of the nicest guys in the paddock, but also one of the best drivers here, for sure."

Neymar back in training

Neymar returns to training with Barcelona, after the Brazil striker passed a medical exam in his continued recovery from a fractured vertebra sustained at this summer's World Cup.

The Brazilian striker trained away from his team-mates on Tuesday after being examined by team doctors. The club says Neymar's progress will determine when he rejoins the team for regular training.

Macklin's fight postponed

Matthew Macklin's WBC middleweight title eliminator against Jorge Sebastien Heiland in Dublin on August 30 has been postponed until later in the year because of an injury to Macklin's lead trainer Jamie Moore.

Ex-European light-middleweight champion Jamie Moore was shot twice in Spain while at a training camp in Marbella. He remains in hospital.

"I am disappointed to have to postpone my fight but in the light of the circumstances and the disruption to my preparation it is the right thing to do," said Macklin.

James Anderson is England's best pace bowler in home conditions since Sir Ian Botham, but must cut out sledging to be regarded as a true great, says former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott.

Anderson, 32, is just 12 wickets behind Botham's tally of 383 Test victims heading into Thursday's fourth Test against India at his home ground of Old Trafford.

"In English conditions, Anderson is as good a fast-medium bowler as there has been and the best England have had since Sir Ian Botham," Boycott said.

However, Boycott has warned that Anderson is in danger of being remembered as a "foul-mouthed abusive bowler".

Derby sign Real Madrid midfielder Omar Mascarell on a season-long loan from the Bernabeu.

Liverpool have made a £17.9m offer for Paris St Germain playmaker Ezequiel Lavezzi, according to reports in Spanish newspaper AS.

The French champions are apparently keen to bring in funds to finance a move for Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria.

Slater surprised

Britain's Steph Slater says she is "surprised" by her world record time to win the S8 100m butterfly gold at the IPC Swimming European Championships in Eindhoven.

The 23-year-old clocked one minute 8.20 seconds to beat American Jessica Long's mark of 1:09.60.

Woods 'will suffer' if he plays at Valhalla

Tiger Woods "will suffer" if he plays through the pain of a back injury in this week's US PGA at Valhalla, according to Colin Montgomerie.

Woods has until 10 minutes before Thursday's tee-off time to declare himself fit to play, having withdrawn from last weekend's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational after jarring his back.

Ecclestone happy case is over

Sportswear giant Adidas recently signed a £750m deal to make Manchester United's kit for 10 years from next season, but a new survey shows that Nike will supply shirts to more teams in the top five European soccer leagues this season than the German firm.

However, the study shows that Adidas has cornered the most lucrative clubs.

It's the first time Nike has overtaken Adidas in Europe since the 2009-10 season to supply 26 of the continent's top clubs, up five compared with last year. Adidas is supplying 18, down four.

Rodgers warning for Van Gaal

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers' claim that Manchester United counterpart Louis van Gaal will be taken by surprise by the competitiveness and physicality of the Premier League is the back-page lead in the Daily Express and several other newspapers.

"I think what he'll find is the competition in this league will be different to any other league that he's worked in," said Rodgers.

"In a lot of the other leagues, there are one or two teams and those are the teams that are expected to win.

"Already this morning, Ellie Simmonds has set a new personal best in the S6 50m freestyle. The 19-year-old clocked 35.76 seconds in the heats, beating her previous best of 36.10 and had a beaming smile on her face. Simmonds won the 400m freestyle on Monday and admitted she was less than happy with her time in that race, but it wasn't the case today. Her final is at 16:53 BST.

"Also this morning, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ollie Hynd defends his S8 200m medley title at 10:14 and European record holder Steph Slater is in action in the S8 100m butterfly final at 09:29."

Liverpool closing in on Manquillo and Moreno deals

Liverpool hope to announce the loan signing of Atletico Madrid right-back Javier Manquillo, 20, in the next 24 hours, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds are also close to completing the £16m signing of Sevilla's 21-year-old left-back Alberto Moreno, but the club are unlikely to pursue Wilfried Bony as Swansea's £20m price tag and the striker's personal wage demands are too high.

Forster deal dependent on Celtic's CL fate

The Daily Mirror reports that Celtic and England goalkeeper Fraser Forster will quit the club should they fail to overturn a 4-1 aggregate deficit in their Champions League qualifier second leg against Legia Warsaw this evening at Parkhead.

Southampton are reportedly poised to complete a £8m move for the 26-year-old.

The Scottish champions will again be without captain Scott Brown and James Forrest for the crucial match. Both have long-term injuries.

The hosts cannot call on the services of Efe Ambrose either as the Nigeria defender is suspended after being sent off in the first leg.
