    Rory McIlroy says his recent form does not signal "the start of an era" as he prepares for the US PGA Championship, which starts on Thursday.

    The world number one has won his last two tournaments, including the Open at Hoylake, and is favourite to claim his fourth major at Valhalla this week. But the 25-year-old says talk of the "Rory era" is premature.

    "I've had a great run over the past few months, but sometimes people are too quick to jump on the bandwagon," said the Northern Irishman.

    Tiger Woods has until 10 minutes before Thursday's tee-off time at the US PGA to declare himself fit to play following a back injury.

    The American, 38, withdrew from last weekend's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational after jarring his back. The four-time US PGA winner requested an extension to the deadline for registration, usually 17:00 on the eve of the tournament, and it was granted.

    Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers' claim that Manchester United counterpart Louis van Gaal will be taken by surprise by the competitiveness and physicality of the Premier League is the back-page lead in the Daily Express , externaland several other newspapers.

    "I think what he'll find is the competition in this league will be different to any other league that he's worked in," said Rodgers.

    "In a lot of the other leagues, there are one or two teams and those are the teams that are expected to win.

    "This is a league where the top team plays the bottom team and on any given day you can lose. You don't get that a lot in the other leagues."

    It's been slow going for Pakistan in their first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

    After winning the toss and choosing to bat, the visitors slumped to 19-2 with Dhammika Prasad removing both openers cheaply. Azhar Ali's patient 30 helped to rebuild the innings, but he has since been removed by Rangana Herath.

    Tottenham are readying a bid of £15.9m for PSV Eindhoven and Netherlands winger Memphis Depay, according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. , external

    The 20-year-old scored twice in the Netherlands' World Cup campaign earlier this summer.

    Britain's Andrea Green defends her Va'a LTA paracanoe title at the Canoe Sprint World Championships, which starts in Moscow today.

    Derby's Green starts as favourite for the title having won the European Championships in Brandenburg earlier this summer.

    However, after learning her event will not be part of the next Paralympics in Rio in 2016, she is in the process of switching to kayak - not that she will let that cloud her focus for Moscow.

    "I'm feeling pretty confident about the Worlds," the 44 year-old said. "I haven't been in my Va'a much, I've been focusing more on the kayak this year, the Paralympic boat.

    "I've just been back in the Va'a this couple of months to get used to it. I've improved my strength and I made a few slight changes in my technique to make me quicker for the Worlds which has helped."

    "Action is continuing at the IPC Swimming European Championships in Eindhoven. It's day three and Great Britain are hoping to add to their eight gold medals so far.

    "Already this morning, Ellie Simmonds has set a new personal best in the S6 50m freestyle. The 19-year-old clocked 35.76 seconds in the heats, beating her previous best of 36.10 and had a beaming smile on her face. Simmonds won the 400m freestyle on Monday and admitted she was less than happy with her time in that race, but it wasn't the case today. Her final is at 16:53 BST.

    "Also this morning, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ollie Hynd defends his S8 200m medley title at 10:14 and European record holder Steph Slater is in action in the S8 100m butterfly final at 09:29."

    Liverpool hope to announce the loan signing of Atletico Madrid right-back Javier Manquillo, 20, in the next 24 hours, according to the Liverpool Echo., external

    The Reds are also close to completing the £16m signing of Sevilla's 21-year-old left-back Alberto Moreno, but the club are unlikely to pursue Wilfried Bony as Swansea's £20m price tag and the striker's personal wage demands are too high.

    The Daily Mirror reports, external that Celtic and England goalkeeper Fraser Forster will quit the club should they fail to overturn a 4-1 aggregate deficit in their Champions League qualifier second leg against Legia Warsaw this evening at Parkhead.

    Southampton are reportedly poised to complete a £8m move for the 26-year-old.

    The Scottish champions will again be without captain Scott Brown and James Forrest for the crucial match. Both have long-term injuries.

    The hosts cannot call on the services of Efe Ambrose either as the Nigeria defender is suspended after being sent off in the first leg.
