    Mario Gotze says his World Cup final-winning strike for Germany against Argentina this summer was instinctive.

    The 22-year-old, who controlled the ball with his chest before sweeping a volley past goalkeeper Sergio Romero, told Bild newspaper: "You don't really think very much when you're in a situation like that.

    "I could try to describe what happened but only after taking a look at the replay myself. In the match it all happens intuitively."

    The last time we saw Andy Murray in competitive action was a strangely subdued performance in a straight-sets quarter-final defeat to Grigor Dimitrov at Wimbledon more than a month ago.

    Warrington coach Tony Smith says it would have been unfair if Leeds captain Kevin Sinfield had been suspended for their Challenge Cup semi-final.

    Sinfield was sent off for the first time in his career during a 24-24 draw with Castleford Tigers last month. The England skipper has completed a two-match ban and is free to face the Wolves at Langtree Park on Saturday.

    "Any more than two games with his impeccable record would have been wrong," said Smith.

    Andy in Armagh, via 81111: Ezequiel Garay moved from Benfica to Zenit St Petersburg for just £4.5m last month. He was in great form for Benfica last season, especially in Europe, and he had a solid showing at this summer's World Cup for Argentina. It's a shame he's gone to Russia, he would have been a great addition to the Premier League.

    Joe Thompson signs a one-year deal at Bury, just seven weeks after being given the all-clear from cancer. The 25-year-old midfielder's contract at Tranmere Rovers expired at the end of June and he has been training with the Shakers for much of pre-season.

    Thompson was diagnosed with nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's lymphoma last October and later underwent a six-month course of chemotherapy.

    Bury have also signed ex-Northampton left-back Joe Widdowson.

    Madrid-based Spanish daily newspaper ABC, external claims that Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria is being fought over by Monaco and Manchester United.

    It claims that while manager Louis van Gaal is a fan of the 26-year-old Argentina international, Manchester United are yet to meet the Real's £44m asking price and Di Maria's demands of £6.3m in annual wages.

    Paris St-Germain haad been thought to lead the chase for Di Maria, but are struggling to sell anyone to make room in their squad and avoid falling foul of Financial Fair Play.

    The boxing rematch between Carl Froch and George Groves at Wembley Stadium in May is officially Britain's biggest grossing fight, according to the Daily Mail., external

    Total income from the fight was more than £22m, with the victorious Froch earning £8m and Groves taking home £2m.

    Hull's one-club half-back Richard Horne, who has 12 caps for Great Britain, announces he will retire at the end of the season.

    The 32-year-old has been with his home-town side all of his playing life, having made his debut aged 16. Since then he has racked up 383 appearances for the Black and Whites, including a victorious Challenge Cup final in 2005.

    English 5,000m runner Andy Vernon apologises to Scotland's Lynsey Sharp after a Twitter row over her winning silver in the Commonwealth Games 800m.

    Sharp, 24, finished second in Glasgow on Friday, less than a day after being on a hospital drip because of illness. Vernon was critical of her reaction to her performance in several comments on the social media website.

    But later Vernon, 28, apologised and tweeted: "What started as a joke got out of hand."

    British heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson pulls out of the European Championships, external having failed to recover fully from the foot injury that forced her out of Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

    Javelin thrower Goldie Sayers will captain the Great Britain team in Zurich from 12 August.
