  1. United back in the hatpublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 13 August 2014

Tonight sees the draw for the Capital One Cup second round - not the most momentous of occasions, you might think, except that Manchester United, having failed to qualify for Europe last season, will be in the hat for the first time since the 1995-96 season.

On that occasion, the Red Devils were defeated over two legs by York City, who memorably beat a side containing David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Parker and Denis Irwin 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Former Manchester United defender John O'Shea says Wayne Rooney is a good choice as the Reds' new captain this season. Speaking to BBC Sport at the Premier League's launch day, the Sunderland player said: "Wayne is a fantastic player, has been at the club for such a long time and won that respect over the years.

"Obviously the new manager has come in and had a look at all of them but opted for Wayne. There will have been lads in that dressing room who already looked up to him an unbelievable amount for the goals he scored and things he has done.

"He has reached that point where he is a leader and he has plenty of experience."

    Phil McNulty
    BBC chief football writer

    Third: Manchester United

"I do not expect United to be on the outside looking in at the top-four fight again this season - and it will still be intriguing to see what Louis van Gaal can get out of a squad that looked in serious need of renewal last season.

"Ander Herrera will provide class in midfield and Luke Shaw youthful quality at left-back, but United need to add authority in central defence (would you trust Chris Smalling and Phil Jones against opposition of the highest calibre?) and in central midfield.

"Not title contenders just yet - there may yet be world-class additions before the transfer deadline that could change that, of course - but do not expect any repeat of the misery Old Trafford suffered under Moyes."

Here are more of your Premier League predictions, taken from the comments section on the BBC Sport website:

Rossyboy1903: Think title will be a fight between Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal (City to win it) and fourth will go to Liverpool or Man Utd. I'm not as confident as some Utd fans who think we can challenge at the top again, but the fact Liverpool have Euro football and we only have one game a week and a more experienced manager should at least keep it competitive.

Jeb: For me it's between Chelsea and City for 1st/2nd and United and Arsenal 3rd/4th. Can't see Liverpool gelling quickly enough to compete for top four while in the CL too.

M_T_Wallet: Leicester to finish a few notches up - 12th or so. Burnley down + two from Villa, Albion and Swansea.

"The league reaches 175 countries, 650 million homes and in the USA last year, experienced its biggest ever audience increase of 114%. Little wonder there is demand for the winning captain, Vincent Kompany."

  20. Small goals for Barkleypublished at 10:19 British Summer Time 13 August 2014
