    Adam Lallana believes last night's Liverpool performance in the defeat to Real Madrid augurs well for their Champions League prospects.

    The Reds are third in Group B but, with games against FC Basel and Ludogorets to come, the midfielder thinks Liverpool will still qualify for the last 16.

    Liverpool Echo reporter Ian Doyle is the latest to question Brendan Rodgers' decision to field a weakened team against Real Madrid last night.

    "At the Bernabeu, however, it was the metaphorical raising of a white flag that symbolised an evening that could become a defining one for Brendan Rodgers.

    Lancashire have hit a £3m bond target which will allow them to continue their development of Old Trafford.

    The Red Rose club can now move ahead with plans to replace Old Trafford Lodge with a new four-star hotel.

    In September, the Red Rose county launched the retail bond asking investors for at least £1,000, with the money being locked away for five years.

    Lancashire named Ashley Giles as cricket director after their relegation to Division Two of the Championship.

    Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards is an injury concern for Wales after suffering knee ligament damage.

    Edwards was hurt during the first half of Wolves' 2-1 defeat at Ipswich Town in the Championship on Tuesday and is likely to miss the Euro 2016 qualifier with Belgium on 16 November.

    His club will assess the problem further in the next couple of days.

    "It's a knee ligament injury, which isn't a good one," Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett told BBC WM 95.6.

    As well as being a mighty fine tennis player, it turns out Andy Murray is also a thoroughly decent chap.

    The British number one is awarded the title of the ATP's Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year.

    He has helped raise money for cancer research at Queen's Club in each of the past two summers: this year in memory of Elena Baltacha, who died of liver cancer in May. He has also helped raise awareness for the work of Unicef and Malaria No More.

    Sanjay Patel, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket India, has told Press Association Sport there will be no backing down in the organisation's high stakes stand-off with the West Indies Cricket Board.

    The BCCI have claimed damages totalling around £26.2m from their Caribbean counterparts following the abandonment of the West Indies' recent tour with five matches unfulfilled.

    The cash-strapped WICB do not have the funds to meet such a figure and face an uncertain future should they be found liable, but Patel said the effect of the cancelled tour has been "direct, disastrous...irreparable" to Indian cricket and that the WICB is held "solely responsible for the entire episode".

    Here's a tale of a hard-up former footballer and model... Ex-England goalkeeper David James is to auction hundreds of items of football memorabilia collected during his career.

    James, who played for Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham, Manchester City and Portsmouth, was declared bankrupt in May.

    Among the items being sold through Kent-based auctioneer Hilco are 150 signed shirts, shorts and match balls.

    Bolton manager Neil Lennon praised his side's excellent performance as they comfortably beat Cardiff in the Championship last night.

    Wanderers midfielder Liam Feeney scored his first two goals for the club and captain for the night Matt Mills completed a 3-0 victory.

    After one win in their first 11 league games, Bolton have won three of their five Championship matches since ex-Celtic boss Lennon, 43, became manager.

    "Our quality of football at times going forward was breathtaking," he told BBC Radio Manchester. "We matched Cardiff all over the park. It was an outstanding team performance. It would be difficult to pick out individuals because they all played, more or less, at the top of their game."

    The Real Madrid and Portugal striker will get his hands on the European golden boot at Melia Castilla Hotel in Madrid. Sounds grand.

    New safety measures have been introduced at Flemington Racecourse after a "freak accident" led to the death of a Melbourne Cup horse.

    Seventh-placed Araldo was spooked by a flag being waved as he walked down a pathway to the mounting yard after Tuesday's race. The horse suffered a serious leg injury and was later euthanised.

    Racing Victoria chairman of stewards Terry Bailey said: "The incident involving Araldo was a freak accident and something that we have not seen previously. However, we have taken these interim measures for the remainder of the carnival and will discuss the long-term procedures with the VRC following its completion."
