He wouldn't say who was warning the team against the strike action, which the team had planned because of concerns for months over the administration of the Samoa Rugby Union and alleged interference in team selection.

"There's been a lot going on the last couple of weeks," said Johnston. "It's really important we put the country first before ourselves. We've all just decided that we'll front up this week to make sure that we play well."

Rafael Nadal criticises Spain's female Davis Cup captain for feeding a "false and absurd" debate that started when his coach questioned whether a woman could coach in the men's game.

The 14-time Grand Slam winner struck out at both captain Gala Leon and the Spanish tennis federation.

"It seems strange to me, as Davis Cup captain, that instead of seeking union and harmony between players, captains and the federation, she has incited and fed a debate that is totally false and absurd," says Nadal.

Scott Overall, who represented Great Britain in the London 2012 Marathon, has voiced his support for Doha, announced as host city ahead of Barcelona and Eugene for the 2019 World Athletics Championships.

"I've raced in all three cities and Doha will do a fine job," said Overall.

"Eugene doesn't have the infrastructure. Obviously athletes will need to adjust if it's done in October, but that is just an adjustment that is easily done.

"There is no international airport near Eugene, not many hotels, sure it has the fans, but Doha is gaining more experience each year with the diamond leagues.

"I did the world indoors there in 2010 and the facilities, medical, everything was great."

Scottish former Fifa referee Hugh Dallas, now in charge of appointing match officials in Greece, has decided to limit his workload after his assistant was injured in a street attack that triggered the indefinite suspension of the country's football leagues.

The Greek Football Association says Dallas will limit his duties to referee training following Friday's attack on referee Christoforos Zografos, who was severely beaten with wooden clubs.

The 57-year-old Dallas, who refereed at the 1998 and 2002 World Cup finals, was appointed earlier this year to oversee refereeing in an effort to combat perceived corruption in the sport.

But it seems the French Davis Cup team have taken some inspiration from the boxing fraternity ahead of this weekend's Davis Cup final against Switzerland.

  17. Fifa lodges criminal complaint over World Cup rowpublished at 16:45 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2014

    Dan Roan
    BBC sports editor

"It's a complex issue and Fifa lodging criminal proceedings is merely the latest twist in a long, long saga.

"In effect, it is tantamount to Hans-Joachim Eckhart (the report author) saying there are limitations or restrictions to how far Fifa could go.

"This is an internal disciplinary investigation by a sports organisation, they could not seize email or phone records, they could not demand certain witnesses appear in front of them and be interviewed.

"A criminal investigator has more power, and they think some things they have unearthed warrant further probing by the attorney general who has more powers."

A 42-page summary report was released last week but quickly criticised by Michael Garcia, who spent two years investigating the claims of wrongdoing.

"Once again, we have examined this matter very, very carefully from a legal point of view," says Blatter. "The result was clear: if Fifa were to publish the report, we would be violating our own association law as well as state law.

"The people who are demanding in the media and elsewhere that Fifa publish the report are obviously of the opinion that Fifa should or must ignore the law in this regard. We obviously cannot do that."
