    Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon seems to think Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer will have his work cut out, external to win the Fifa Ballon d'Or.

    Neuer, 28, won the World Cup with Germany and a domestic double with his club this year and is joined by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi on a three-man shortlist for the award.

    "Perhaps a goalkeeper will win the Ballon d'Or when he helps his team become world champions by winning four games in a row on penalties and saving every spot-kick," says Buffon while laughing. "That way no-one can overlook him. But something really remarkable needs to happen."

    Lord Sebastian Coe says he favours giving athletes a lifetime ban for doping but says: "legally that train has probably left the station".

    Coe, who is running for president of athletics' governing body the IAAF, was speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

    "This is not a battle that we can lose and under my presidency that is not something we will flinch," he said of doping in athletics. "It is entirely predicated on trust, trust that the athletes competing against each other trust in each other."

    He may be the reigning WBA and IBO middleweight champion of the world and one of the most feared fighters on the planet, but Gennady Golovkin cannot get a visa to enter the United Kingdom.

    The 32-year-old Kazakh was due in London yesterday to hold a news conference before his February fight with St Helens fighter Martin Murray but visa issues held up his arrival and eventually led to his trip from the US being cancelled.

    Birmingham City have issued a statement to refute reports that they are in financial trouble, at a time when speculation is increasing that they may have a new potential buyer.

    BBC WM 95.6 report that former Swindon owner Jeremy Wray is behind a bid for the Championship club, who have been up for sale for two-and-a-half years.

    That has not been denied by the club's Hong Kong-based parent company.

    In the short term, Blues released a statement, external saying: "The club wishes to allay any fears that may now arise on the basis of the allegation there will be no funds beyond January-February 2015 - this is categorically refuted."
