    Frank Lampard

He's now staying until the end of the season, with the player himself releasing a statement earlier today to try and clear up the situation.

Quoted in the Guardian, City said: "The statement on the NYCFC website in July saying Lampard's two-year contract took effect from Aug 1, 2014 was a mistake. The initial statement on City's website that it was a loan was also an error.

"Any contract with NYCFC will now take effect from July 1, 2015."

"Why not keep that level in all games? We know it is not easy but if we are capable of that performance against Chelsea we need to keep those performances in the future," says the Argentine.

"We are very happy, the 5-3 against Chelsea means more than just one victory.

  20. Why I let Podolski go - Wenger

    Football

Arsene Wenger has revealed why he decided to allow German international Lukas Podolski to leave on loan join Inter Milan on loan for the rest of the season.

"He didn't get enough opportunities to play - because I knew that, I gave him a chance to go," the Arsenal boss said.

    Lukas Podolski

"Why? Because we have many players who can play in these positions and at the end of the day only 11 can start.

    Football

Simon Stone, BBC Sport football writer

Virtually since he joined Manchester United, Louis van Gaal has been battling against injuries.

Now he has only one - and how he enjoyed telling everyone.

"I am very happy with your question," he said with a big smile. "Can you believe it?"

The pitch inspection at Accrington Stanley has taken place and it's bad news... the club's League Two game with Bury tonight has been called off because of a waterlogged pitch.

    Accrington Stanley
  28. Woods back at 'raucous' event

    Golf

Former world number one Tiger Woods has confirmed he will start his 2015 season at the Phoenix Open, arguably the most raucous event on the PGA Tour.

Woods suffered an injury-plagued 2014 which saw him undergo back surgery, fail to qualify for the FedEx Cup play-offs or Ryder Cup, and split from coach Sean Foley.

    Tiger Woods

After missing the cut in the US PGA Championship in August, the 39-year-old had a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

"It will be great to return to Phoenix," the 14-time major winner said on his website. "The crowds are amazing and always enthusiastic."

On his Twitter page, Woods posted a link to his hole-in-one in 1997 on the 16th, a short par three which attracts massive crowds who often boo when players miss the green.

Wolves have striker Rajiv Van La Parra fit again for Sunday's trip to Blackburn after missing last weekend's 0-0 FA Cup third round draw at Fulham, reports BBC WM's Mike Taylor.

  31. Manchester United news conference

    Football

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal

It seems Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal isn't too keen to share his transfer plans with the media. (Not that he should, of course)

"I do not discuss that with you," says the Dutchman. "You can ask that any way you want. But remember, I bought Victor Valdes in very quickly."

He does, however, reveal, Ashley Young will be out for four to six weeks with a hamstring injury and that his aim is to "form the best team in the world".

  33. Don't try this at home

    Tennis

    Andy Murray

Hard to know for certain but we're fairly sure Andy Murray isn't taking part in a modern-day version of It's A Knockout, but is instead in training.

Standing on what appears to be an oversized beach-ball, holding a tennis racquet, and producing quite a grimace, the Scot posted this photo on Instagram, with the message: "Post match work out... Don't try this at home."

    Rest assured Andy, we won't.

  35. Curle pulls no punches

    Football

No one can accuse Carlisle United manager Keith Curle of not being straight-talking.

Speaking to the club's website about the return of midfielder Alex Marrow to training, Curle said: "The situation is that Alex wants to leave the football club. I also want Alex to leave the football club.

    Keith Curle

"Fortunately for Alex, while he is here, and doesn't want to be here, he still gets paid. Unfortunately for me while Alex is here, and doesn't want to be here, I've still got to pay him.

"I've asked Alex to leave and not take the money he's owed. That has been my negotiating strategy. We've obviously hit a stumbling block on that.

"In the short term the beauty of what we've got with working for a very honourable football club is that we will continue to pay Alex for his services, even though he doesn't want to be here."

We're just guessing here, but it sounds like the two of them might not be going out for a drink together anytime soon...

  36. Awaiting Van Gaal

Simon Stone, BBC Sport football writer

"A trip across rainy Manchester and now I am at Manchester United to hear with Louis van Gaal has to say ahead of Sunday's game against Southampton.

"Yet again though, an injury roll call is required."

Louis van Gaal is due to start his press conference any minute now.

  38. 'Experienced journalists were surprised'

    Football

Steve Bruce caused something of a stir today with his comments in support of convicted rapist Ched Evans.

Here are the thoughts of the man who asked the Hull manager the question, BBC Look North's Simon Clark.

"As a seasoned football manager who has taken charge of more than 700 games Steve Bruce is always willing to answer questions posed by journalists at his weekly news conference. Normally these are about routine matters such as injuries and potential signings he would like to make.

    Steve Bruce

"Today though even experienced journalists were surprised at how much detail Bruce went into when I asked him if he was one of the three Premier League managers who had spoken to Oldham Athletic chairman Simon Corney.

"Bruce had no hesitation in admitting that he had spoken to Mr Corney about the Ched Evans matter before giving the news conference his take on how he viewed the Evans case.

"Steve Bruce is not a manager you normally associate with controversy but his comments today have certainly stirred public opinion."

  42. Stoke news conference

"It's difficult to say how far we can go. We had a good season last time round and got up to ninth.

"If we could do that again then we would be delighted. My teams historically grow stronger as the season goes on, whereas many others burn brightly initially and then fade somewhat."

    Confidence, we like it.

  44. Stoke news conference

    Football

    Mark Hughes

Mark Hughes on Sunday's opponents Arsenal: "Arsene Wenger is very consistent in terms of the style he will play.

"He has a few key players back too, so we know they will be very strong."

  45. Ex-England international May to retire

    Rugby Union

London Welsh team captain and former England international Tom May is to retire at the end of the season.

Centre May, 35, joined Welsh in 2013 and led them to promotion via the Championship play-offs last season.

He began his professional career at Newcastle Falcons, making his debut in March 1999, and went on to play for Toulon before joining Northampton.

  47. Stoke news conference

    Football

Stoke lost out to Inter Milan in the race to sign Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri.

But Hughes said it showed the ambition of his club.

"We will pursue players who we feel that we can realistically get and Shaqiri was one of those. He slipped by the wayside, but we were firmly in the frame," said the Stoke boss.

"If you read what his agent said then you will see that we were serious contenders.

"We can take a lot of comfort from the fact that we can get these players in the room now and have serious conversations with them. Maybe that wasn't the case in the past."

  48. Stoke news conference

    Football

First up a question for Hughes about new signing Philipp Wollscheid.

The 25-year-old Germany centre-back has arrived on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, with a view to making a permanent move in the summer.

"The timing of getting a new central defender wasn't what we anticipated, but we felt it was too big an opportunity not to take," said Hughes.

"He is a really good player, he is in good shape and he has arrived here in a good frame of mind.

"Having seen him in training this week he looks impressive. It is a big decision whether to throw him in at the deep end on Sunday, so we will wait and see."

Koeman also revealed he has given his players three days off this week, because "we lacked a bit of fitness" during the 1-1 FA Cup third round draw against Ipswich.

  70. Chelsea news conference

    Football

Newcastle's Papiss Cisse won't be involved when Chelsea host Newcastle on Saturday - the striker is on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Senegal.

Asked if that was a bonus for the Blues, Steve Holland said: "We've been on the flipside of that situation in the past, with players like Drogba and Mikel.

    Papiss Cisse

"If you have players from that part of the world, that's the risk you run. I'm quite sure Newcastle will have been aware of that well before now. and will have factored that into their planning.

"They have a good squad and I'm sure whoever plays in that position at the weekend will be a good player.

"But for us it's obviously good for us if the club we're playing are without their best players. The same could happen next week with Swansea and Bony, and Manchester City and Yaya Toure."

What about those reports linking Lionel Messi with Chelsea?

"Jose Mourinho has made it quite clear that nobody comes or goes," says Chelsea assistant coach Steve Holland.

    Lionel Messi

"I recall he said something similar last year but a couple of things happened which meant we had to be reactive. The hope and expectation is that nobody comes or goes."

In terms of Messi, he adds: "When you look at some of the numbers mentioned around the Messi deal, you would think it is almost impossible for any club working within the Financial Fair Play rules."

  73. Chelsea news conference

    Football

Steve Holland, explaining how big the pressure is: "The pressure is equal. If you look at the league table, 20 matches in, the two teams at the top of the table aren't even separated by goal difference. Their records are identical. So just over the halfway mark, the difference between success and failure is so small.

"And in a game like Southampton, when clearly a penalty should have been given, it would have been a good situation for us and we might have gone on to win the game.

"So when managers speak immediately after a match, they are going to be frustrated."

  74. Chelsea news conference

    Football

Jose Mourinho leaves his news conference duties to assistant Steve Holland having been charged by the Football Association for claiming there is a "campaign" to influence referees' decisions against the Blues.

"He's focused on the game against Newcastle tomorrow," says Holland. "We lost the away game recently and we are very determined to put that right.

"There is a frustration with all of us, not just Jose, at the accumulation of events. We are all together in this but we all have to move on."

BBC Sport football writer Simon Stone

    FC United

"Maybe the most impressive aspect is the terrace behind one of the goals, which saved the club £150,000.

"Bought from Northwich Victoria when they hit financial difficulties, the structure was formerly the Dane Bank end of Drill Field.

"It was taken down and kept in various locations in the Manchester area before being rebuilt again.

"However, as the markings show, the pieces have not been put together in the right order.

"I don't want to talk more about it. I don't listen to the fathers, the mothers or the grandmother or the grandfathers."

  95. Arsenal news conference

Arsene Wenger insists Wojciech Szczesny remains in contention for a return to the Arsenal side for the weekend visit of Stoke despite allegedly smoking a cigarette in the dressing room following the recent defeat at Southampton.

    Arsenal

"Of course [he has apologised]. He is a serious boy who works very hard, he doesn't need all that. He made a mistake, he is not the first one or the last one.
