    "Although the project has taken longer than envisaged and costs have risen, meaning plans have had to be scaled down, it's opening, possibly in February, is testament to the hard work that has gone in since the Evostick Premier Division club was formed in 2005.

    "Those who have stuck with the club, which emerged following Malcolm Glazer's takeover of Manchester United will be housed in a 4,400 capacity arena, that has adjoining community pitches, impressive match day bar facilities, good changing rooms and even somewhere for female officials."

    England captain Chris Robshaw has been named in the Harlequins side to face Leicester tomorrow in the Premiership.

    Robshaw has been out of action for five weeks after suffering a shoulder injury against Leinster last month, but has not undergone surgery and is set to lead England in the upcoming Six Nations.

    Swansea City are contemplating a bid for Aston Villa's Matt Lowton, says the Daily Mail., external

    Garry Monk wants competition for Angel Rangel and Neil Taylor in the full-back positions and Lowton is frustrated with his playing time at Villa Park, says the paper.

    The Mail claims Swansea enquired about Tottenham's Kyle Naughton but baulked at the £5m price tag.

    Breaking a record set by Australia legend Don Bradman is quite an achievement but that's what the country's current skipper Steve Smith has done in the fourth Test in Sydney.

    Smith hit 71 off 70 balls to pass Bradman's 1947-48 record of 715 for the most runs by an Australian in a series against India.

    Great Britain have avoided a Belarus team headed by Victoria Azarenka in the draw for the group stage of their Fed Cup division.

    The team - featuring Heather Watson and captained by Judy Murray - will play Ukraine, Turkey and Liechtenstein in qualifying in Budapest in the first week of February.

    If they top their group, they may then need to beat Belarus in a play-off to qualify for next year's World Group 2.

    The other members of the team are Johanna Konta, Anna Smith and Jocelyn Rae. Laura Robson's delayed return to the tour has ruled her out.

    If you've lost four league games on the trot then one of the last sides you want to be facing is champions Manchester City but that is exactly the scenario facing Everton.

    BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage has had his say on how Toffees boss Roberto Martinez can get his Goodison Park side back on track.

    "In a way Martinez actually needs to be more like predecessor David Moyes was, and find a way of grinding out results," says Savage in his BBC Sport column.

    "He needs his team to get their belief back, but the first thing they need to be is hard to beat again."

    Roger Federer will challenge Grigor Dimitrov for a place in the final of the Brisbane International after brushing aside home hopeful James Duckworth in 41 minutes.

    The Swiss world number two - last year's runner-up at the tournament - hammered Duckworth 6-0 6-1.

    Bulgarian Dimitrov, the fourth seed, reached the semi-finals by ousting Martin Klizan 6-3 6-4.

    The other last-four showdown sees second seed Kei Nishikori tackle Milos Raonic.

    Cardiff have completed the signing of Rotherham United striker Alex Revell, subject to international clearance.

    Revell, 31, was signed by Russell Slade in 2010 when the Bluebirds boss was manager of Leyton Orient.

    The 6ft 3in forward, who has also played for Wycombe Wanderers and Swindon, has scored four goals in 26 appearances this season.

    Of the eight men left in the BDO World Championships, only Jeff Smith does not hail from Great Britain.

    But the 39-year-old Canadian is hoping to live up to his nickname of "The Silencer" and quieten his remaining rivals for the title and emulate fellow countryman John Part, who won the first of his three world titles in 1994.

    BBC Sport's Phil Cartwright caught up with Smith following his second-round win over Gary Robson to find out a bit more about a man who spray-paints cars for a living.

    Hull City manager Steve Bruce has questioned the conviction of rapist Ched Evans and says the footballer should be given a chance to play again.

    Evans was released from prison in October and saw a move to Oldham Athletic collapse this week.

    He was convicted in 2012 and refused leave to appeal, but the Criminal Cases Review Commission is studying his case.

    "I might be upsetting people but there is a question of the rape and how he's been convicted by a jury," said Bruce. "When you look at the evidence, it is there for appeal."

    Norwich City have confirmed the appointment of Alex Neil as their new manager following the resignation of Neil Adams earlier this week.

    Neil, 39, has left Scottish club Hamilton to join the Carrow Road side.

    A little more on the 'no smoking please' cafuffle at Arsenal.

    Wojciech Szczesny's father came out in defence of his son, after the accusations of smoking in the dressing room. Szczesny snr pointed the finger at the rest of the Arsenal defence for the goals conceded at Southampton.

    Asked about that during his press conference, Arsene Wenger said: "I don't need to make a big fuss of it. Every club has internal discipline and rules and it does not have to be public.

    "I don't want to talk more about it. I don't listen to the fathers, the mothers or the grandmother or the grandfathers."

    Give Wenger his due, ask a question and he'll always give you an answer.

    Arsene Wenger insists Wojciech Szczesny remains in contention for a return to the Arsenal side for the weekend visit of Stoke despite allegedly smoking a cigarette in the dressing room following the recent defeat at Southampton.

    "I don't want to talk about that because what happens in our dressing room stays in our dressing room - apart from the fact that it doesn't stay in there," said the Arsenal boss.

    "Of course [he has apologised]. He is a serious boy who works very hard, he doesn't need all that. He made a mistake, he is not the first one or the last one.

    "You can do what you want at home. You have a freedom. My issue is that the players here are judged on their performances. Ideally, the best way to have as high [a] level as possible is to behave as close to the rules."

    England captain Wayne Rooney has had his ups and downs with the national team's fans but all seems to be hunky dory again.

    The Manchester United forward has been voted the men's player of 2014 by England fans, while Toni Duggan has won the women's award.

    "I would also like to thank all the England fans for their support throughout what was a mixed year," said the 29-year-old Rooney.

    "They have stuck by us since the World Cup, we have managed to win every game since and are in the best possible position for European qualification."

    Top seed Simona Halep sailed into the WTA Shenzhen Open final and will face Timea Bacsinszky, after the Swiss world number 47 upset double Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova.

    Romanian Halep, ranked third in the world and last year's French Open runner-up, disposed of unseeded home player Zheng Saisai in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
