Rodgers on the quality of Chelsea:

"I was at Chelsea when Nemanja Matic came in and he certainly wasn't the player then that he is now. He showed his quality at Benfica and has come back stronger. He is very good. At the top end of the field they have real talent. I love Diego Costa's game. He presses and works and has better feet than people think. Then you've got Hazard and Oscar. So it is a threat. But for us it is about nullifying that threat and bring the qualities of our players into the game.

"These are the games that excite you and it is an opportunity to win a trophy. If we do that it is an opportunity to bring these players on."

"Jose Mourinho has proved he is a top class manager over the last decade or so and he has great experience. But once the players cross the line it isn't down to Jose or me, it is down to those on the pitch."

Rodgers on Rickie Lambert's goal on Saturday against Aston Villa and the celebration:

"I thought it was brilliant. I know he got booked for it but it was a yellow card worth taking. To score a goal like that as a local boy, the chance to celebrate with your own supporters ... it captured the spirit we have and it was a great moment."

Rodgers on the two-legged Capital One Cup semi-final:

"We have spoken about the fact it is a different type of game. You don't need to open up too much. We want to win, but the tie won't be won or lost in the first game. We know we'll have to deal with pressure at moments in the game but the most important thing is to make sure we are in a good position in the second leg."

Rodgers on forward Divock Origi, who is on loan for the season at Lille: "He will most likely stay at Lille.

On Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho telling fans not to mock Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard following his slip in a crucial match against the Blues last season:

"Jose is talking out of respect for a player who is one of the best this league has ever seen. I reiterate that Steven last year was a big part of the reasons why we challenged for the title. His slip didn't lose it, he was a big part of us nearly winning it. He is a strong character and he'll have no problem dealing with it."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, speaking ahead of his side's Capital One Cup semi-final against Chelsea on Tuesday:

"Chelsea are in a really strong position. They have a very experienced squad of players who are playing well. They are five points clear but there is still a long way to go.

"Our objective is still to win a trophy and qualify for the Champions League. A trophy would help build for the future. Chelsea have showed that once you win a trophy you can go on and sustain it. But the first trophy is always the hardest.

"We know it will be very tough but to win a competition, you have to beat the best teams. We are developing and improving as the season goes on and we are full of confidence."
