    Manzon, a member of the 24 Hours of Le Mans hall of fame, took part in the famed endurance race six times, and drove in 28 F1 races from 1950-56.

    Championship League One side Gateshead Thunder have rebranded as Newcastle Thunder, returning professional rugby league to the city for the first time since 1938.

    As part of the change, Thunder have applied to Newcastle City Council to make Kingston Park their home ground.

    The switch comes after Newcastle Rugby Limited, owned by Falcons rugby union chairman Semor Kurdi took over the rugby league side in May.

    Ex-Crystal Palace sporting director Iain Moody has spoken for the first time about the text scandal involving himself and Malky Mackay.

    He resigned in 2014 after allegations he shared racist, sexist and homophobic texts with manager Mackay, when they were at Cardiff City from 2011 to 2013.

    "Good people sometimes do bad things," he told Palace fanzine Five Year Plan. "I'm not denying it was me, but that's unrecognisable and it's not a reflection of what I stand for."

    World heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has announced his first fight in America for seven years.

    The 38-year-old Ukrainian will defend his IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO belts against unbeaten 30-year-old Bryant Jennings at Madison Square Garden on 25 April.

    The bout will be Klitschko's first fight since November, when he knocked out Bulgaria's Kubrat Pulev.

    Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has described Sunderland as a "special club".

    The 32-year-old striker completed his move to Sunderland last week, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with the club.

    "It's been good and it always helps knowing a few of the players when signing for a new club. The lads have been great," he said.

    "I spoke to Gus on a few occasions and I played with him at Spurs. Even before I met him he was someone I admired as a player.

    "I have always known over the years that it is a special club with special fans. I'm really looking forward to making my home debut."

    The Cyprus Football Association says it is postponing all matches for one week after referees went on strike following a bomb attack.

    The week-long strike is in response to a bomb attack at the home of a referee's mother.

    "It's a disgrace. It was a big device and it blew off the front door of the house," said Costakis Koutsokoumnis of the Cyprus FA. "If the mother of the referee was not in the right place then we probably would already have a victim."

    It is the third such attack this season. All league and cup games scheduled from Tuesday onwards, from senior to junior level, will be postponed until Monday, 26 January.

    Mauritius international Kevin Bru has signed a contract extension with Ipswich Town to run until 2018, with an option for a further year.

    The 26-year-old has made 21 appearances for Town, who have lost fellow midfielder Luke Hyam for up to six weeks with a knee injury.
