    Watford have signed midfielder Ben Watson, external from Wigan. The midfielder, whose contract at the DW Stadium was set to expire at the end of the season, is best known for scoring the goal that won the 2013 FA Cup final against Manchester City.

    The 29-year-old is eligible for Watford's Championship match against Blackpool tomorrow.

    There's been another penalty shootout in the day's second Asian Cup quarter-final - and an upset to go with it. The United Arab Emirates are through to the last four, beating defending champions Japan 5-4 on spot-kicks in Sydney after a 1-1 draw.

    The UAE will next face tournament hosts Australia in Newcastle on Tuesday.

    Luton Town manager John Still has said former England striker Andy Johnson is likely to join the League Two side, should he decide to carry on playing.

    The 33-year-old former Everton, Fulham and QPR player left Crystal Palace earlier this month at the end of a short-term deal.

    "He's still in a situation where he's not 100% sure what he wants to do," Still told BBC Three Counties Radio. "By and large, if he plays, he'll play here. I think he just wants to make sure he can be comfortable playing."

    As trailed a short time ago, Massimo Cellino has resigned from his post as president of Leeds United.

    The Italian businessman lost his appeal against the Football League's decision to disqualify him from owning Leeds earlier this month. BBC Radio Leeds reports that board member Andrew Umbers has become interim chairman.

    In a club statement, the Italian said: "It is with great sadness and frustration that I have to take this step, however I abide by the Football League's decision to temporarily disqualify me from this great football club and will return in April in good health and good spirits.

    "I have done my best for a club and fans that I hold close to my heart and it is now financially much stronger than it has been for a long time. It will continue to thrive and I am sincerely looking forward to returning very soon."

    West Brom midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu will have a scan on the hamstring injury that is threatening his further participation in the Africa Cup of Nations.

    The Democratic Republic of Congo captain limped off during Thursday's goalless draw with Cape Verde in Ebibeyin.

    "I felt my hamstring but I hope it is going to be OK. But I really felt pain," he said.

    Rafael Nadal had a tougher time of it in the third set than in the first two, but the Spaniard has beaten unseeded Dudi Sela of Israel 6-1 6-0 7-5 to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open. The 2009 champion, seeded third, will face South Africa's Kevin Anderson next.

    Former Marussia Formula 1 driver Max Chilton is linking up with Carlin as they both consider moving into the Indy Car series for 2016.

    Briton Chilton - left without an F1 berth after Marussia went into administration towards the end of last season - is not expected to drive for Carlin in 2015, but will instead help Dubai-born Ed Jones, who has been signed up for Indy Lights, a competition that develops drivers for the Indy Car series.

    "While I'm still considering my options for 2015, the Indy Car package presents an interesting challenge and by assisting with the development of the Indy Lights team I'm keeping my options open for an Indy Car programme in 2016 based on a strong foundation of knowledge and experience," said Chilton, although presumably not all in one breath.

    MK Dons boss Karl Robinson hinted that there is some substance to Newcastle United's reported interest, external in midfielder Dele Alli.

    The 18-year-old has 11 goals in League One this season and is expected to go on to big things, having been scouted by Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

    "Obviously there has been a lot of talk about Dele and Newcastle," Robinson told BBC Three Counties Radio. "I don't think it's paper talk, I think it's a bit more than that, but it's nothing we've heard about yet."

    Blackpool defender Nyron Nosworthy will remain with the Championship's bottom club for the remainder of the season. The 34-year-old's short-term deal was due to expire this month. He has made four appearances so far for the Seasiders.

    Australia have beaten England by three wickets with a ball to spare in Hobart to reach the ODI Tri-Series final. Captain Steve Smith's century was key for the hosts, before Mitchell Starc hit the winning run in a tense finish. The final is in Perth on Sunday, 1 February - and they could yet face England again, although India may have something to say about that.

    Full-back Alex Tait has extended his stay at Newcastle by two years. The 26-year-old full-back follows homegrown talents Will Welch and Tom Catterick in agreeing new terms at Kingston Park.

    "Alex is another of our talented local contingent and as such it is good that he has chosen to remain with us," said rugby director Dean Richards."

    Mohamed El-Sayed, of BBC Arabic, is at the Asian Cup in Australia, and gives this reaction to Iraq's thrilling quarter-final win over Iran on penalties in Canberra (see 09:58):

    "Although Iraq won the trophy in 2007, Iraqi football has since failed to capitalise on the momentum generated by that victory, because of the volatile political situation in the country. However, this unexpected win could again breathe life into the stagnant Iraqi football scene.

    "With seven of the nine Arab teams competing knocked out at the group stage, football fans around the entire Arab world are now pinning their high hopes on Iraq and UAE - who are still playing against Japan in the quarter-finals in Sydney."
