"Sorry for keeping you up late but at the last moment the main deal collapsed and the rest folded like a pack of cards. Stay strong," he tweeted. "No matter how hard you tried there are people out there that you just can't do business with."

Alan Simon:, external Poor dealings by Spurs but at least we ruined West Ham's day. Payback for refusing to ground share. Take that Karren Brady!

d prasad:, external I am disappointed that Man Utd didn't sign Cuadrado themselves. They should have paid £25m for him. On top that, let Zaha go. Mistake

Graphic showing top-flight spending across Europe's main leagues

How does the spending of Premier League clubs compare with other top-flight leagues in Europe? We can help because we've done our calculations and put it all in a nice graph.

Italian Serie A clubs spent 50% of the amount Premier League clubs parted with (£65m), the German and Spanish spend was about 40% (£52m), while in France it was a quarter of England's (£32m).

We can't promise a graph on the hour every hour, but we'll try our best.

You can watch BBC sports editor Dan Roan's interview with Jorge Mendes on this website. The Portuguese says people have the "wrong idea" about football agents and defends the amount of money in the game.

Mendes, who is reported to have brokered more than £1bn worth of transfers, has been described as the most powerful figure in the game.

He described football as the "most important sport in the world" and defended players' wages, saying they "deserve the maximum possible".

  9. 'Clubs would pay ate least £300m for Ronaldo'published at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2015

One player who will never be involved in another transfer is Cristiano Ronaldo, according to his agent Jorge Mendes.

But should Real Madrid decide to let him leave tomorrow, the Portugal captain would sell for £300m says Mendes.

Asked how much he was worth, Mendes said: "Cristano Ronaldo? One billion. His buyout clause one billion, so it is one billion. It is impossible to buy someone like him. If for any reason the club decide to sell him tomorrow for £300 million, someone will pay."

But asked if Ronaldo will finish his career at Real, Mendes said "for sure". "He will not leave Real Madrid," he added.

Chelsea's £23.3m signing of winger Juan Cuadrado was the biggest deal completed on transfer deadline day, but Manchester City's acquisition of Wilfried Bony for £28m was the month's most expensive signing.

Crystal Palace were the busiest top-flight club on deadline day, signing four players including Wilfried Zaha - but there were more comings and goings at Crawley Town last month than anywhere else, with the club signing nine players. Nine!

  14. Premier League clubs spend bigpublished at 08:13 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2015

Graphic showing Premier League spending in January over the last 10 years

A cool £130m was spent by Premier League clubs in the January window, which matches last year's figure. That amount is short of the record £225m frittered away in 2011, though - but way more than the £30m shelled out in 2010. While we write out the next entry, why not have a look at a nice graphic we've prepared on Premier League clubs' January spending since 2006.
