    Britain have won their opening game in their Fed Cup qualifying in Budapest after singles wins for Heather Watson and Johanna Konta against Liechtenstein gave them an unassailable 2-0 lead.

    The epitome of the modern, three-format batsman, De Villiers can destroy an attack with classical strokeplay, ingenuity and raw power. The fastest man to 7,000 ODI runs, but that record is nothing compared with the devastation wreaked on the West Indies on 18 January. A 16-ball fifty, a 31-ball century, both the fastest in ODIs, in an innings of 149 in 44 balls that contained a record-equalling 16 sixes. De Villiers has also claimed 97 dismissals on occasions when he has played as wicketkeeper-batsman.

    London Irish have held talks with highly-rated Chiefs lock Matt Symons, academy coach Declan Danaher has told BBC Radio Berkshire.

    Symons, 24, has established himself at the Chiefs after moving from England to New Zealand to play amateur rugby.

    "If we're lucky enough to get hold of him, he's a dynamic and exciting lock who's played in the Super 15 in a very good team," said Danaher. "I think the club have spoken to him but I suppose we'll find out a lot more in the next couple of days."

    A finisher before the rest of the world knew what a finisher was, Bevan made a career of dragging Australia over the line in run-chases, often with only the tail for company. A two-time World Cup winner, Bevan's average is the highest of any retired player and of all of ODI batsmen to have registered more than 6,000 runs.

    British number two James Ward continued his climb towards the world's top 100 by beating Antonio Veic to reach the second round of the Zagreb Indoors.

    The world number 109, who gave veteran Spaniard Fernando Verdasco a real scare at the Australian Open last month, needed just over an hour to defeat home hopeful Veic 6-2 6-4 in the Croatian capital.

    Ward, 27, fired three aces past his first-round opponent and saved three of four break points and will next face fifth seed Andreas Seppi of Italy.

    It's almost here... the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

    And, to mark the competition's opening on the weekend of 14 February, BBC Sport is conducting a vote on the world's greatest one-day international XI. Each day, Sportsday Live readers will get to vote for the different components which make up the side - opening batsmen, middle-order batsmen, all-rounders, wicketkeepers, pace bowlers and spin bowlers. The contenders have been nominated by the Test Match Special team.

    Voting on each category will take place on each weekday, with two votes on 9 February. The vote result won't be revealed until the Tuffers & Vaughan show on BBC Radio 5 live on Monday, 9 February and on the BBC Sport website.

    The second one is live now and we'll profile the contenders during the course of the next 120 minutes. You can vote for one player, with the top three being selected as middle-order batsmen.     While West Ham players have formed a band for charity, a lifelong Everton fan has swapped from blue to Liverpool red before this weekend's Merseyside derby to raise money.

    The Liverpool Echo, external reports that 51-year-old Raymond Moore is doing a series of challenges.

    He has already run 10k and completed the three peaks challenge, but the most difficult task will probably be on Saturday when he will have to cheer for Liverpool rather than his beloved Toffees.

    Midfielder Katie Chapman has been recalled to the England squad for the friendly with the USA on 13 February.

    The 32-year-old last played internationally in 2010, but stopped after not receiving backing over childcare issues.

    However, manager Mark Sampson reassured her the door was open for a return to the national set-up and this is her first call-up in five years while defender Anita Asante, who plays in Sweden, also returns.

    Huddersfield defender Tommy Smith has told the Huddersfield Examiner, external of his moment of panic after he was airlifted to Leeds General Hospital when he was knocked out in Saturday's defeat to derby rivals Leeds.

    "I can remember all the game up until the incident quite clearly, but then I felt as though I clashed my head from both sides and, when I went down, that was pretty much it," he said.

    "I regained full consciousness when we were halfway to the hospital in the helicopter, which took me by surprise, and when I realised where I was I started panicking a little bit. I was all strapped up to keep me secure and the panic came about because I couldn't really move.

    "I remember thinking to myself just to try and keep calm, to close my eyes and hopefully the whole experience will be over in no time."

    Kevin Pietersen will be part of the BBC Test Match Special commentary team during the upcoming Cricket World Cup.

    The four-time Ashes winner will join the team from the quarter-finals onwards and the 34-year-old says he is looking forward to it.

    "I really enjoyed having a go at some commentary during the Big Bash and it will be good to return to Australia for the climax of what should be a really exciting tournament," he said.

    Harry Redknapp resigned as QPR manager on Tuesday but have we seen the last of him in the dugout or will he pop up again to talk transfers through the window of his car?

    BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty asks whether the former Tottenham boss has lost his sparkle.

    "Just five wins all season - and an horrendous run of 11 straight league defeats away from Loftus Road - tell the story," writes McNulty. "By the time he quit, Redknapp had lost 26 of 48 Premier League games in charge, winning just nine. Contrast this with his fine spell at Spurs, where he won 71 of 144 games."

    Tim Sherwood has emerged as a frontrunner to become the next Queens Park Rangers manager.

    Derby boss Steve McClaren and Real Madrid assistant coach Paul Clement are also in the frame to replace Harry Redknapp, 67, who resigned on Tuesday.

    QPR chairman Tony Fernandes is keen to bring in a young manager with a focus on nurturing young talent.

    Golfer Rory McIlroy has reached an out-of-court settlement with his former management company Horizon Sports Management at the High Court in Dublin

    McIlroy had been suing Horizon following a multi-million euros dispute over fees.

    The period under dispute coincided with McIlroy's sponsorship deal with Nike, said to be worth about $100m (£66m) and the golfer complained that fees charged by Horizon were excessive.

    The management company was counter-suing for outstanding fees, alleging breaches of contract.

    Football super-agent Jorges Mendes has been talking about all sorts of things with BBC sports editor Dan Roan. Well, all sorts of football things.

    One topic has been Jose Mourinho, and Mendes does not think his client will ever manage Manchester United.

    "Jose will stay for sure," said Mendes of the Chelsea manager. "He will be the Sir Alex Ferguson of Chelsea Football Club. He loves the supporters, he loves the city and I think he will stay there for more than 10 years."

    As well as England, France have named their first team for the 2015 Six Nations campaign.

    South African-born scrum-half Rory Kockott will make his first start in their opener against against Scotland on Saturday in Paris.

    After three substitute appearances during the November internationals, the 28-year-old Castres half-back will line-up alongside Camille Lopez, who starts at fly-half.

    Scott Spedding, another South African born player who only made his France debut in November, continues at full-back while Stade Francais prop Rabah Slimani comes in at tight-head.
