    Former West Bromwich Albion defender Daryl Burgess does not believe the signing of Manchester United's Darren Fletcher will significantly improve the Baggies' midfield.

    Burgess told BBC WM that Fletcher is "very similar to the type of players they already have at the club".

    Fletcher, who turned out to be new Albion manager Tony Pulis's only deadline day signing, is expected to make his Baggies debut at Burnley this Sunday (12:00 GMT).

    Club owner Tony Fernandes says he has been impressed with Les Ferdinand since his return to the club in October as head of football operations and says he will play a key role in the club's new direction.

    "Our recruitment policy at QPR is changing," he said. "We want to develop a philosophy of buying young, hungry players, who can go on to forge decent careers with us.

    "We've made a number of mistakes in the transfer market over the last few years and it's something we want to change. We don't want to be a buying club - we want to nurture young talent and build a young, ambitious team.

    "Premier League survival is our priority in the short term, but in the medium and long term we want to make sure everything is in place, from the academy upwards, to create a culture and philosophy within the club that QPR fans can be proud of."

    Changes are continuing at QPR following Harry Redknapp's resignation on Tuesday with former player Les Ferdinand named director of football at the club.

    The 48-year-old re-joined the Loftus Road club in October as head of football operations and will now be responsible for overseeing the entire footballing department and building for the future.

    "Everyone knows what this club means to me and if anything the last few months have only enhanced the feelings I have for QPR," he said.

    "Working closely with Tony [Fernandes] and the Board, I can assure QPR fans that they are desperate to create a lasting legacy at Loftus Road and the role of Director of Football will be hugely important in terms of where we want to take this club in the future.

    Great Britain's women have started their Fed Cup qualification campaign against Liechtenstein in style, with Johanna Konta winning the opening match of the tie 6-0 6-0 in Budapest with the doubles and second singles matches to come.

    Reports in Germany suggest that Bayern Munich and former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola could take over as Qatar's coach for the 2022 World Cup.

    The 44-year-old signed a three-year contract with Bayern when he joined in 2013 but has yet to agree a new deal with the Bundesliga leaders. German newspaper Sport Bild, external dedicated its front page on Wednesday to speculation that he could be tempted by a lucrative deal with the 2022 World Cup hosts.

    The 44-year-old spent two seasons at the end of his playing career at Qatar Stars League side Al-Ahli and was part of the 2022 World Cup bid.

    BBC Sport's Andrew Benson reports that Marussia's chances of returning to Formula 1 this season have increased.

    The team ceased trading last November but there is now a plan for them to come out of administration on 19 February and receive new investment.

    Administrators FRP Advisory said the company was making "progress towards a longer-term viable solution".

    In the England side, Dan Cole takes over from David Wilson in a pack showing four changes from the one that started the last international against Australia, with lock George Kruis in for Courtney Lawes, James Haskell replacing Tom Wood at blind side flanker and Billy Vunipola taking over from Ben Morgan at number eight.

    Jonathan Joseph and Luther Burrell form the centre partnership in the only changes to the backs.

    Nick Easter and Danny Cipriani are confirmed on the bench while the team has only five starters from those who were in the starting side for the 30-3 defeat in Cardiff two years ago.

    Michael Clarke will be fit to captain Australia at the World Cup, according to coach Darren Lehmann.

    Clarke, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, is due to play for a Cricket Australia XI against Bangladesh in Brisbane on Thursday.

    The 33-year-old was injured playing against India in the first Test at Adelaide in December, and even suggested he may never play again given his age and recent injury record. But he has stepped up his recovery and took part in fielding drills and net sessions on Wednesday, having played in Sydney grade cricket at the weekend.

    Disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident after crashing into two parked cars in the American ski resort of Aspen, Colorado.

    According to police, the cyclist left before officers arrived and allowed his girlfriend Anna Hansen to take the blame.

    Armstong, 43, who was stripped of seven Tour de France titles for doping, faces court on 17 March and could face a fine and up to 90 days in jail if convicted of the charges of leaving the scene and driving too fast for the snowy conditions.

    Football agent Jorge Mendes believes Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, who is one of his clients, will stay at Old Trafford.

    The 24-year-old Spaniard, who joined United for a £17.8m fee in 2011, has been linked with a big-money move to Real Madrid.

    "He has one year left on his contract and I think that he will stay in Manchester," said the 49-year-old Mendes, who is reported to have brokered more than £1bn worth of transfers. "The player will decide, but he's happy there, at the moment."

    Sifford twice won on Tour in the 1960s and was inducted into golf's Hall of Fame in 2004.

    Last year President Obama presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In the world of golf, it's an honour only Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer have received.

    Football super-agent Jorges Mendes has said Manchester United still have not found a replacement for their "genius" former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

    Mendes - who represents several top players at Old Trafford - told BBC Sport that executive chairman Ed Woodward was "the right guy to drive Manchester United to find a way to win important trophies".

    "But at the same time, he has just one problem - it's completely impossible to find someone like Sir Alex Ferguson because he's a god, he's a genius and to find a genius is very difficult," Mendes said. "You have one in England - Jose Mourinho."

    Former Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz has been talking to BBC Radio 5 live about Reds captain Steven Gerrard, who is set to make his 700th appearance for the club in this evening's FA Cup replay against Bolton.

    Henchoz, who was playing for Blackburn when Gerrard made his Liverpool debut in 1998 against Rovers, said: "Nobody at the time could ever imagine that he'd be the player he's been, being the greatest player of all time for Liverpool.

    "It just shows the talent Steven Gerrard has got, obviously as well the dedication. It shows how good a pro he's been all these years.

    "I doubt anyone will play that many games for Liverpool. These days football has changed. Who playes for a club for 10 years?"
