Stoke defender Marc Muniesa is out for up to six weeks with a torn hamstring.

The 22-year-old suffered the injury during Stoke's 4-1 FA Cup fifth-round defeat by Championship side Blackburn.

"We feared it was a really bad one. He had a scan and they've come back saying it's four to six weeks," assistant boss Mark Bowen told BBC Radio Stoke.

It leaves Stoke short of cover for their next game against Aston Villa with Ryan Shawcross also injured and Robert Huth on loan at Leicester.

  6. Holding backing for Irelandpublished at 18:38 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2015

Former West Indies pace bowler Michael Holding believes Ireland should be granted Test status.

His comments come on the back of Ireland beating the West Indies in their opening World Cup group game on Sunday.

"Ireland need to be recognised now," said Holding. "It's about time ... if they continue to linger around the lower regions of world cricket they'll continue to lose good cricketers.

"(Eoin) Morgan left Ireland to play for England because he saw brighter prospects."

  7. Dorrans to join Norwich on loanpublished at 18:35 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2015

West Brom midfielder Graham Dorrans will join Norwich on a month's loan this week.

The 27-year-old Scotland international, who was close to moving to Carrow Road during the transfer window, will complete the temporary switch on Thursday.

He told Norwich's website:, external "I'm glad to finally get it sorted. I came here on the last day of the transfer window and for whatever reason it didn't work out.

"I've been in discussions ever since then, so although I was frustrated it never got done on the final day, I hope now I can add to a good squad."

  8. Palace pledge to ban coin throwerspublished at 18:26 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2015

Crystal Palace says they will ban indefinitely anyone found guilty of throwing coins at recent home matches.

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini was struck by a coin when celebrating a goal with team-mates during last week's 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park.

United manager John Carver said the Argentinian defender could have been blinded for life, while a similar incident occurred during Saturday's 2-1 home defeat to Liverpool in the FA Cup fifth round.

"We have conducted our own investigation into the incidents at our last two home matches, as well as making our CCTV footage available to the police," read a club statement.

"We take a zero tolerance approach to this sort of behaviour and, if the perpetrators are identified, they will be banned indefinitely from the stadium. If they are season-ticket holders, their cards will be made void without a refund."

  10. 'We normally take 50 to games'published at 18:20 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2015

Perhaps the most intriguing game taking place in England tonight . . . is a Scottish Cup fifth-round replay.

Spartans FC, of the Lowland League, are aiming to become the first non-league side to reach the Scottish Cup quarter-finals for 47 years when they visit League Two Berwick Rangers. If they win, they will face neighbours Hibernian next.

Craig Graham, Spartans' chairman, has told BBC Radio 5 live: "It's more excitement than nerves for us. We don't get to this round of the Scottish Cup very often, so we've got to have fun, enjoy it and get excited by it.

"We've got 11 buses going, so there are over 500 fans going that way, there's a train route from Edinburgh to Berwick that only takes 45 minutes and there are obviously a few car loads as well. So we're hoping to take 1,000 fans. We normally take 50 to games."

  13. Saints ready for 'great Souths side'published at 17:58 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2015

St Helens head coach Keiron Cunningham says he is looking forward Sunday's World Club Series game against "one of the best" South Sydney Rabbitohs sides.

Saints are competing in the newly-expanded competition for the first time since 2007, when they beat Brisbane.

"They're probably one of the best Souths sides that have ever existed," Cunningham told BBC Radio Merseyside. "You've got those Burgess boys (George, Tom and Luke), Greg Inglis, great halves, they've got strike out wide - it's going to be good.

"I'm looking forward to seeing that Souths side walk out at Langtree Park; it's going to be a special moment for me as a coach."

The BBC Sport website will be running a live text commentary on all of the World Club Series matches.

Afghanistan will make their World Cup debut against Bangladesh at 03:30 GMT on Wednesday.

BBC Sport's Stephan Shemilt writes: Andy Moles has had three previous international coaching jobs, but his brother didn't want him to take the fourth.

The reason? Moles is in charge of Afghanistan and his brother works in counter-terrorism.

"He wasn't very happy," the former Warwickshire batsman told BBC Sport.

"He's still not happy about the time I spend in Kabul because he hears all the dark things that are happening there."

  15. '1-1 would keep Chelsea very happy'published at 17:42 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2015

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin gives BBC Radio 5 live his forecast for the Parc des Princes: "I wouldn't be surprised by a 1-1 tonight. That would keep Chelsea very happy, and it wouldn't be the worst result in the world for PSG either, because they will feel that they can score when they get to Stamford Bridge."

  16. 'Diego Costa v David Luiz should be top fun'published at 17:39 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2015

Diego Costa is set to return in attack for Chelsea tonight after completing a three-match ban - which is likely to mean a contest with Paris St-Germain defender David Luiz, who left Stamford Bridge for the French capital last summer.

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin has told BBC Radio 5 live: "Jose Mourinho says he doesn't feel Diego Costa is 100% fit, but I'm looking forward to seeing him against David Luiz. That should be top fun.

"I think David Luiz is a great player, but not necessarily a great centre-half. He has all the attributes to be a top defensive midfielder, but he makes too many mistakes at centre-back. Maybe he hasn't got the mental strength to play there. Let's not forget, though, that he was voted among the top 11 players in the world."

  17. It's about Mourinho - Nevinpublished at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2015

Let's start looking ahead to tonight's Champions League action. Chelsea are in France to face Paris St-Germain in the first leg of their last-16 tie, and their former winger Pat Nevin has been speaking to Radio 5 live.

Nevin, who played at Stamford Bridge between 1983 and 1988, said: "Paris St-Germain have four or five injury problems, and they may well have to field players who are not fully fit. But tonight's match is all about Jose Mourinho - and whether he wants a defensive-type Chelsea away performance or thinks that this is the chance, and goes out to get an away goal our two to tie things up. Laurent Blanc, on the other hand, has to put out whatever side he can.

"It's amazing how many times the away goal becomes so important, because it changes everyone's tactics for the second leg. You love a 1-1 away from home, but a 0-0 is not so good."

  18. Azinger support for Lovepublished at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2015

    Davis LoveImage source, Getty Images

Paul Azinger has welcomed reports that Davis Love will captain the United States Ryder Cup team for the second time at Hazeltine in 2016.

The Golf Channel has reported that Love will be appointed next week and given the chance for redemption after being on the wrong end of the 'Miracle at Medinah' in 2012, when his side lost despite leading 10-6 going into the final day's singles.

"If true, I believe that Davis is an excellent choice to lead US Ryder Cup in 2016," Azinger told the Golf Channel., external

"He's still connected to the players. He was very prepared and thorough in 2012. Davis will bring much needed continuity to the process.

"I had no interest in being the captain in 2016 for many reasons, personal and business. I suggested Davis to the powers that be at the PGA. He's a logical choice if he wants it."

Catalans Dragons coach Laurent Frayssinous says Super League referees are failing to protect his exciting full-back Morgan Escare.

Frayssinous claims the 23-year-old France international, who was the Dragons' leading tryscorer in 2014, is being targeted unfairly by opponents.

"I am angry and frustrated," says Frayssinous. "I'm really worried and concerned about the way Morgan Escare is being treated.

"The opposition started to target him at the end of last season and it is happening this year."
