    The owners of Birmingham City Football Club have said they have "no other option" than to go into receivership.

    The Championship club's parent company Birmingham International Holdings Limited (BIHL), blamed "fractious and inharmonious relations within the management" for the decision.

    BIHL said it had appointed three receivers from Ernst and Young.

    The club said it wished to reassure supporters "most emphatically" that no winding-up petition had been filed.

    Former Paris St-Germain forward Nene is undergoing a medical ahead of a potential move to West Ham.

    The 33-year-old Brazilian is available on a free transfer after leaving Qatar outfit Al-Gharafa in January and would bolster the club's attacking line-up after Andy Carroll was ruled out for the rest of the season.

    Former Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait is to return for a second spell with Essex for this summer's T20 Blast campaign.

    Tait, who will be 32 next week, is among the quickest bowlers in the world and helped Essex reach finals day in the domestic Twenty20 competition in 2013.

    Essex coach Paul Grayson said: "Shaun had such a positive impact around the club during his first spell.

    "We believe we have an excellent chance of winning the T20 Blast this season, and Shaun will help us towards that target. Alongside Jesse Ryder, we now have two really exciting overseas players."

    Cardiff flanker Rory Watts-Jones has been forced to retire from professional rugby on medical grounds.

    Watts-Jones suffered a concussion-related injury in November and his retirement comes in the wake of high-profile head injuries to Wales pair George North and Samson Lee during the Six Nations game against England in Cardiff on 6 February.

    The 26-year-old said: "I am obviously devastated after accepting medical advice that I should retire from rugby. Having put in so much to have my career cut short before I had reached my full potential is hard to take."

    A club statement read: "After a period of recovery and specialist review, under the guidance of Cardiff Blues medical team, Watts-Jones was advised to retire with his long-term health regarded the highest priority."

    Davis Love will be named United States captain for the 2016 Ryder Cup, according to a report by the Golf Channel.

    Love was captain in 2012 when the US led 10-6 going into the final day's singles only to lose 14.5 to 13.5 after an inspired European fightback labelled the 'Miracle at Medinah'.

    The 50-year-old was part of an 11-man task force charged to look into all aspects of the US approach to the Ryder Cup after they suffered an eighth defeat in the last 10 contests at Gleneagles in September.

    But a statement from the PGA of America read: "It is premature to discuss the US Ryder Cup captaincy and we are not prepared to comment at this time."

    Nottinghamshire batsman James Taylor has been awarded an increment contract by England for 2014-15.

    The 25-year-old top scored for the side with 98 in England's thrashing by Australia in their opening World Cup game last Saturday.

    He qualifies for the award after reaching the required points within a 12-month period which a non-contracted player needs in order to automatically earn an increment contract.

    Glasgow Warriors second row Tim Swinson has been added to Scotland's squad for the rest of the Six Nations.

    Swinson - celebrating his 28th birthday today - replaces Richie Gray who, as we reported at 10:35, will miss the remainder of the championship with an arm injury.

    Australian full-back Greg Inglis could be the next big rugby league defector.

    The newly-appointed captain of NRL champions South Sydney has two years left on his contract with his club but is being tipped to follow his former Rabbitohs team-mate Sam Burgess into rugby union at the end of 2015.

    Inglis is in Manchester ahead of Sunday's World Club Challenge clash with Super League champions St Helens.

    "I'm contracted to 2017 but I'm still looking at different options," he says. "Years pass that quick and we're in 2015 now so I'm just keeping all the doors open and all my options open. There is no harm in looking around."

    St Johnstone captain Dave Mackay has agreed a one-year contract extension.

    The 34-year-old defender, who arrived from Livingston in 2009, has made over 230 appearances for the club, and led them to the Scottish Cup last season.

    Manny Pacquiao says a fight with unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather is "near" after he agreed to a key demand to undergo drug testing.

    "(The fight) is near. The negotiations are nearly finished," says Pacquiao.

    "We agreed that this fight has to happen. We are ironing out the kinks. He (Mayweather) said he wants the fight to push through."

    Mayweather is the WBC and WBA champion, while Pacquiao is the holder of the WBO belt.

    Scotland lock Richie Gray has been ruled out of the rest of the Six Nations after suffering an arm injury in Sunday's 26-23 defeat to Wales.

    The loss of the 25-year-old, who plays for Castres in the French Top 14, has come a day after it was announced that Glasgow prop Jon Welsh neede surgery on a fractured hand.
