    Italy has announced its intention to bid for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

    "The growth of rugby in Italy in recent years, our experience of hosting Six Nations games as well as the November Tests are fundamental to our bid," said Italian Rugby Federation president Alfredo Gavazzi.

    Ireland are so far the only nation to formally bid to host the 2023 tournament.

    Trainer Gary Moore has likened chaser Sire De Grugy to the world's fastest man, Usain Bolt.

    Sire De Grugy won at Chepstow recently after recovering from a hip injury and is being prepared to defend his Queen Mother Champion Chase crown at the Cheltenham Festival.

    "If he was a human, he would be Usain Bolt - he's big, strong and just very talented," Cisswood-based Moore told BBC Sussex.

    More from Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse, who admits he should not have reacted in the clash with Manchester United defender Jonny Evans.

    In his statement, he adds: "I reacted to something I found very unpleasant. Sometimes it is hard not to react, particularly in the heat of the moment. I have always tried hard to be positive a role model, especially for our young fans, and yesterday I let you down.

    "I hope children out there playing football for their clubs and schools this weekend will know better than to retaliate when they are angry. Perhaps when they see the problem it now causes me and my team they will be able to learn from my mistake, not copy it."

    Evans has also released a statement today, denying spitting at Cisse.

    Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse apologises for his part in the spitting incident with Manchester United defender Jonny Evans last night.

    The Senegal international appeared to spit at Evans before squaring up to his Red Devils opponent.

    In a statement released by the club, he says: "I have apologies to make to a lot of people today. Firstly to my teammates and to our supporters, secondly to Jonny Evans, and thirdly to every football fan who saw the incident between myself and Jonny."

    Perhaps only the most positive of Manchester City fans believe they can overhaul leaders Chelsea's five-point advantage to regain the Premier League title.

    But City midfielder James Milner, who netted the second in last night's 2-0 home win against Leicester City, is still confident. He reckons they must win their final 10 matches - and believes they can do so.

    "We know what is in front of us now. The remaining games, we have to win, and we are more than capable of doing that. We have done it before," says the England man.

    A former test driver sacked by F1 team Sauber is taking legal action against the team.

    Dutchman Giedo van der Garde claims Sauber reneged on a deal to give him a 2015 race seat.

    Swede Marcus Ericsson and Brazilian Felipe Nasr have been signed as Sauber's race drivers for the season, while Italian Raffaele Marciello has been named as Sauber's reserve.

    Wales captain Sam Warburton and fly-half Dan Biggar have been passed fit for the Six Nations match against Ireland in Cardiff on 14 March.

    The pair were hurt last weekend in the 20-13 win over France in Paris.

    Flanker Warburton had a bruised knee while Biggar took a blow to his hip, but both have returned to training this week.

    "They'll be fit and available for selection," confirms Wales assistant coach Rob Howley.

    Former Barcelona and Newcastle striker Patrick Kluivert is poised to be named the new coach of Caribbean island Curacao, according to local media.

    The Curacao Chronicle reports that Kluivert, whose mother hails from Curacao, is due to be unveiled on the island today.

    38-year-old Kluivert was assistant to Louis van Gaal with the Dutch national team until Van Gaal's move to Manchester United. He was also linked with the Ross County manager's job - a role that ultimately went to Jim McIntyre.

    Manchester United defender Jonny Evans insists he did not spit at Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse when they clashed in last night's Premier League match.

    Evans says: "I am shocked to have seen the media coverage from last night's match. I would like to make it clear that I did not spit at Papiss Cisse.

    "I was totally unaware of any spitting incident and had assumed that the issue at the time was with the challenge and his attempted retaliation to the tackle from the floor.

    Stiliyan Petrov will return to former club Aston Villa to work with the first team, head coach Tim Sherwood has just announced.

    Petrov played for Villa from 2006 to 2012, when he was diagnosed with leukaemia. The illness is now in remission.

    Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho and Chelsea's Oscar are among five English-based players in the latest Brazil squad, ahead of the Selecao's upcoming friendlies against France and Chile.

    Chelsea duo Filipe Luis and Willian and Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho are also included, alongside the likes of Neymar and Thiago Silva.

    The match against Chile takes place on 29 March at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.

    Warrington's Tony Smith is "proud" of his record as the longest-serving head coach in the Super League era, as he enters a seventh year in charge.

    The former Leeds and Huddersfield boss took over on 5 March 2009, initially combining the role with being in charge of the England team.

    "We've created a terrific culture here where we're trying to improve as a club on and off the field, and I think we've made some great inroads in that over the years," he said.

    Rotherham United have signed Burnley defender Daniel Lafferty on an emergency loan deal.

    The 25-year-old Northern Ireland international has played twice for the Clarets this season.

    The former Derry City man could make his debut for the Millers in Saturday's Yorkshire derby against Huddersfield.

    Northampton Saints scrum-half Lee Dickson believes he is in the thoughts of England head coach Stuart Lancaster.

    The 29-year-old has not featured in this year's Six Nations, and the last of his 18 Test caps came last summer.

    "I spoke to the England staff a couple of times. They're happy with how I'm playing - they think I'm playing very well," he told BBC Radio Northampton.

    "For reasons that they have, they've gone for Ben Youngs and Richard Wigglesworth. I have to take that on the chin and adapt and react to that."

    Lancashire sign Australia pace bowler Peter Siddle as their overseas player for the new season.

    The 30-year-old will be with the Red Rose county from the beginning of the season until the end of July.

    Siddle, who was with Nottinghamshire last year, has taken 192 wickets in 56 Tests and played every match in the two Ashes series in 2013-14.
