    News of an international managerial appointment to bring you - Japan have appointed former Algeria manager Vahid Halilhodzic as their new boss.

    Previous coach Javier Aguirre was fired after Japan flopped at the Asian Cup in January and he was beset by allegations of match-fixing dating back to a previous tenure in Spain.

    Bosnian Halilhodzic has also managed Paris Saint Germain, Dinamo Zagreb and Ivory Coast in a nomadic career.

    The last race of next week's Cheltenham Festival has been renamed to honour retiring 19-time champion jump jockey AP McCoy.

    The AP McCoy Grand Annual Handicap Chase for the Johnny Henderson Challenge Cup is due off at 17:15 GMT on Gold Cup day, 13 March.

    The new name, made in agreement with the Henderson family, is for 2015 only.

    Here's a treat for British athletics fans. Olympic champion and 800m world record holder David Rudisha confirms he will compete at this summer's Birmingham Grand Prix.

    The Kenyan created one of the defining moments of the London 2012 Olympics, setting a new world record of 1:40.91 when he won the 800m.

    "I love competing in the UK and I can't wait to line up at the Birmingham Grand Prix," he says.

    "I have good memories of winning over 600m in Birmingham last summer and of course setting the world record at the London 2012 Olympics. Hopefully I can repeat that sort of form against what I'm sure will be a very strong field in June."

    Former England bowler Chris Tremlett has described Kevin Pietersen's sacking by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as "unfair".

    He also criticised the comments of incoming ECB chairman Colin Graves that Pietersen could yet return to international cricket.

    Tremlett writes in City AM, external: "Kevin Pietersen's sacking last February was unfair, and it was a shame for English cricket the way it happened, but the timing of Colin Graves seemingly handing him a lifeline has created an unwelcome distraction.

    "It would be good to see Kevin play for England again, because they are crying out for a match-winner."

    Reigning NRL premiers South Sydney Rabbitohs make a winning start to life without Sam Burgess as they cruise to a 36-6 victory against Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.

    The Bunnies, who named England forwards George and Thomas Burgess in their squad, ran in five tries from Dylan Walker, John Sutton, Greg Inglis, Luke Keary and Joel Reddy to ensure a miserable homecoming for returning Broncos coach Wayne Bennett after six years away.

    Great Britain's Davis Cup tie against the United States begins on Friday, and the draw is coming up at 12:00 GMT here in the Scottish city.

    Andy Murray leads the British team and he has been talking about his search for an assistant coach, after early exits in his last two tournaments. "After the Aussie Open I spent the next three or four weeks with no coach, and I feel that's something I need to get sorted.

    "For me, it's better to have someone around so I'll try to make sure I do that for the clay-court season. That's high on my list of priorities."

    Norwich City's in-form striker Lewis Grabban is set for a spell on the sidelines to have an ankle operation.

    The 27-year-old, who has five goals from his last five Championship games, will undergo the surgery on Thursday.

    It is not known how long he will be out for, but boss of the Championship high-flyers, Alex Neil, is hopeful of a return before the end of the season.

    As footballing weeks go, it is fair to say Chelsea have enjoyed a decent one. On Sunday, the Blues beat London neighbours Tottenham to lift the League Cup and then last night they edged past another rival - West Ham - to maintain their Premier League title challenge.

    Wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Brown and all-rounder Harry Finch have signed deals with Sussex until the end of 2016.

    Brown, 26, has scored 2,970 runs and taken 177 catches in 67 first-class matches since making his debut in 2007.

    Finch, 20, a Sussex youth academy graduate like Brown before him, who signed his first professional contract in 2013, made his T20 debut last season and also featured in the One-Day Cup.

    Meanwhile, disaster averted in the US's Major League Soccer: the new season will kick off as scheduled on Friday after the threat of a players' strike was headed off.

    A five-year deal for a new collective bargaining agreement has been reached after four days of negotiations.

    The agreement is a contract to promote the mutual interests of MLS, the players and their union.

    New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez, one of baseball's biggest stars, has played his first game in his comeback from a 162-game doping ban.

    The 39-year-old New York Yankees slugger missed the entire 2014 season after he was suspended for taking performance-enhancing drugs.

    He was greeted by cheers and boos as the Yankees faced the Philadelphia Phillies in Tampa, Florida.

    BBC Sport has announced extensive coverage of the 2015 Formula 1 season, with 10 races live on television and highlights of all others.

    Every race, practice and qualifier will be live on BBC Radio 5 live or sports extra and the BBC Sport website, allowing audiences to "get as close as possible to the starting grid, paddock, pit-lane and track," according to Ben Gallop, the BBC's head of F1.

    And that's not all - this very website will once again host an exclusive column by reigning champion Lewis Hamilton.

    Hamilton told BBC Sport: "I hope it gives some insight into my life, which is pretty different to most people's, and shows just how much work I put into being the best F1 driver I can be."
