    A Scottish Premiership footballer has admitted kicking a police officer - his third conviction for police assault.

    Dundee FC midfielder Paul McGowan, 27, was arrested after an incident at a house in his home town of Airdrie in the early hours of 23 November 2014.

    At Airdrie Sheriff Court, he admitted behaving in a threatening manner and assaulting PC Jamie White. Sentence was deferred and his bail continued.

    McGowan was given a community sentence last year for an attack on police.

    Leeds Rhinos full-back Zak Hardaker was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a student - after his club called the police when they saw CCTV images of the England international on a local newspaper's website.

    "As soon as we were made aware of the pictures that were on the Yorkshire Evening Post website, we actually rang the police ourselves," reveals Rhinos coach Brian McDermott.

    "We made that phone call straight away and then phoned Zak."

    Hardaker, 23, along with club-mate Elliot Minichella, 19, were released without charge after admitting the assault.

    The pair agreed to pay £200 in compensation and write a letter of apology to the victim under a "community resolution".

    England's current situation is a "soap opera", according to former national captain Michael Vaughan.

    The team made an early exit from the World Cup at the pool stage, leading to questions over coach Peter Moores.

    Selectors have since been criticized by Alastair Cook for dropping him as one-day captain while also coming under pressure to clarify the international future of ex-player Kevin Pietersen.

    "If any producer is willing, make a movie," Vaughan tells Test Match Special.

    More from BBC Sport's Pat Murphy on the revelation incoming ECB chairman Colin Graves has spoken to Kevin Pietersen - the day after the ECB said they had no plans to recall the 34-year-old batsman.

    "Graves has confirmed he recently called Pietersen who then requested a meeting when he returned from the World Cup, where he's commentating for BBC Radio," he says.

    "Graves hasn't yet agreed to the meeting but says he'll try to accommodate Pietersen although he'll make no promises to him.

    "Graves stressed it was a confidential phone call and that he can't comment any further until he takes over as ECB chairman on 15 May."

    Derbyshire sign specialist Twenty20 fast bowler Nathan Rimmington for the T20 Blast in 2015.

    The 32-year-old plays for Melbourne Renegades in Australia's Big Bash and is one of the leading wicket-takers since the league's inception in 2011.

    Earlier this week, Derbyshire signed veteran Sri Lanka batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan, who will appear for the county in two spells during the summer.

    Sport England is taking funding away from swimming, rugby league, gymnastics and equestrian sport on the basis that they missed participation targets

    Total amount taken away is £1.53m across the four sports.

    "It has been removed from four governing bodies because they failed to meet targets agreed between them and Sport England in 2013/14," said a spokesman.

    The money, the spokesman added, "will be reinvested in alternative projects to explore new ways of producing better results in those sports".
