    Palace's English stars Scott Dann, Joel Ward and Wilfried Zaha have all impressed since Pardew took over in January.

    "Our boys are fighting for their status. You need to gain your status, and to be fair to Harry Kane he has done that really fast," says Pardew.

    "Let's hope we can produce someone of that ilk because he is a really good example to every young player up and down the country."

    Jermaine Beckford says he considered retiring from football because of the problems caused by an ear infection.

    The 31-year-old striker, who is currently on loan at Preston from Bolton, has scored four goals in his five outings since returning to the team following a month-long absence.

    "I couldn't move," Beckford tells BBC Radio Lancashire. "I was laying down in bed and any time I tried to sit up I would pretty much lose consciousness and pass out. I would get dizzy, throw up, that sort of thing - it was brutal, a really, really tough time.

    "After the third week I'd seen no improvement at all and I thought to myself 'well after three weeks nothing has got better - I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to call it a day soon'.

    "I think the first time I sat up was maybe about 24 or 25 days into it."

    Keeping things simple is one of the keys to India's continuing World Cup success, according to captain MS Dhoni.

    India made it seven successive wins in this tournament, and 11th overall in World Cups, courtesy of a 109-run quarter-final victory over Bangladesh.

    "If there's any pressure on these players, I'm taking it off them by saying we've got no chance of automatic promotion," Brown told BBC Essex. "We were playing for automatic promotion before the game and at half-time. I think that's gone now."

    British pair Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland withdraw from the upcoming ISU World Figure Skating Championships due to illness.

    Coomes is recovering after spending a few days in an American hospital with illness.

    The unlucky pair also withdrew from the European Figure Skating Championships in January because Buckland was ill.
