Then again, to be fair to them - given the summer we've had - they probably weren't expecting glorious sunshine in mid-September...

Not surprisingly Van Gaal is rather chuffed with Martial's impact thus far.

"He scores goals. That is the most important thing, and he is doing great," said the United boss. "He can improve further I think but he has a high level of talent."

Van Gaal also believes victory proves his side can have a tilt at Premier League glory.

"We have made a statement that we shall compete for the title," he said.

"You cannot expect a title from a team in transition, but when we are close we shall grab it."

Some said Manchester United gaffer Louis van Gal might have lost the plot when he shelled out big bucks for 19-year-old Monaco forward Anthony Martial.

It's still early days but three goals in his first three shots on target suggests that Van Gaal's judgement might be pretty sound after all.

The teenager was at it again at Southampton where his two goals secured three points for the Reds in a thrilling 3-2 victory.

The victory moves United up to second in the table, two points behind rivals Manchester City, who lost 2-1 at home to West Ham on Saturday.
