There could only be one outcome, a footballing lesson and a heavy defeat.

    Wrong.

Lawrie Sanchez's header and a Dave Beasant penalty save from John Aldridge secured one of the most famous footballing victories of all time - and led to one of John Motson's best ever commentary lines too.

Peterborough United have appointed former Stevenage boss Graham Westley as their new manager.

The League One side have been without a permanent boss since sacking Dave Robertson on 6 September.

Former Preston manager Westley, 47, has been without a job since leaving Stevenage in May, after losing in the League Two play-off semi-final to Southend.

He watched from the stands as Posh drew 1-1 with Walsall on Saturday, leaving them 18th in the league.

    Brazil 1-7 Germany

Brazil had the weight of their nation on their shoulder when they faced Germany in the World Cup semi-final in Belo Horizonte in 2014.

But the Germans hadn't read the script and were 5-0 up within half an hour.

They went onto win 7-1 and inflict Brazil's heaviest World Cup defeat and their first competitive home defeat in 39 years.

Germany would go on to beat Argentina in the final to win the World Cup.

    Senegal defeat world champions France

In 2002, France went to the World Cup in South Korea and Japan as reigning champions, European champions and one of the favourites for the cup.

They had a team of galaticos including Fabien Barthez, Lilian Thuram, Marcel Desailly, Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet.

Zinedine Zidane withdrew through injury but their opening match against World Cup debutants Senegal was meant to be a formality.

Midfielder Pape Bouba Diop scored the winner on 30 minutes as Senegal stars like El Hadji Diouf became household names.

France never recovered and following a draw with Uruguay and a 2-0 defeat to Denmark meant they finished bottom of their group, while Senegal went on to reach the quarter-finals.

The West Indies side of the late 1970s and early 80s was packed full of world-class, legendary talent and marched ominously to the final of the 1983 World Cup at Lord's. They had won both of the previous two World Cups.

After reducing India to 183 all out, few would have expected anything other than a hat-trick of victories.

But improbably the Indian bowling attack exploited the weather and pitch conditions perfectly to bowl out the best batting line-up of the era for 140 from 52 overs in return, winning by 43 runs.

Kapil Dev conceded just 21 runs from 11 overs. Against that batting line-up...

Ban 'left me in dark place' - Baxterpublished at 13:42

    Jose BaxterImage source, PA

Sheffield United forward Jose Baxter says failing a drugs test earlier this year left him 'in a dark place'.

He served two months of a five-month ban, the rest suspended, after testing positive for ecstasy - but blames it on a spiked drink.

"I was in a dark place, but I'm happy now I'm back playing. It has been a sticky few months, but I'm glad to see the back of it," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

    Sheffield stun Wigan

Wigan had failed to reach the final since their 1995 triumph, but the 1998 brand of Warriors were odds-on favourites to notch their name on the famous trophy once again.

John Kear's Sheffield Eagles were the opposition at Wembley, but not many outside South Yorkshire gave them a prayer.

But five minutes in, and it was the Wigan fans looking to the heavens as Nick Pinkney touched down before a Matt Crowther try and a Mark Aston drop goal put Sheffield 11-2 up at half time.

With the crowd watching open-mouthed, Darren Turner went over in the second half and the underdogs survived a late Wigan onslaught to hold on and complete a stunning Wembley upset.
