    Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson demanded that his salary was doubled in the aftermath of Wayne Rooney's big pay increase in 2010.

    Rooney was set to leave United before signing a deal worth £250,000 a week.

    "I told them I did not think it fair that Rooney should earn twice what I made," Ferguson says in a new book.

    "[United co-chairman] Joel Glazer said: 'I totally agree but what should we do?' It was simple. We just agreed no player should be paid more than me."

    Younes Kaboul is suspended for Sunderland's League Cup tie against Manchester City after being sent off at Bournemouth at the weekend.

    Skipper John O'Shea, who missed that trip through illness, is available, but Adam Matthews (ankle) is still out.

    Eliaquim Mangala is a doubt for City after being taken off against West Ham and David Silva has a calf problem.

    Young forwards Kelechi Iheanacho and Patrick Roberts could feature, as could Spanish full-back Pablo Maffeo.

    Aston Villa are without midfielder Idrissa Gueye after he flew back to France for treatment on his hamstring problem.

    Jores Okore (knee) and Adama Traore (ankle) are also expected to be sidelined but Rudy Gestede could start.

    Birmingham are without defender Neal Eardley, who is likely to be out for six weeks with a dislocated shoulder.

    Clayton Donaldson is set to lead the line with Demarai Gray supporting him in attack.

    Managing Bolton Wanderers is just as challenging as being in charge of former club Celtic, according to manager Neil Lennon.

    Lennon spent four years in charge at the Bhoys, winning three league titles, two Scottish Cups as well as managing in the Champions League.  

    "It's as big a challenge as I had at Celtic, in a totally different way," the 44-year-old told BBC Radio Manchester.

    Sunderland and Newcastle were amongst the biggest spenders in the summer transfer window, according to a new study, external of Europe's top five leagues.

    Newcastle's net spend of £66m was more than Bayern Munich, Juventus and Chelsea this summer, despite being second bottom of the table.

    Sunderland - who are the only team below Newcastle in the Premier League - are 13th with a net spend of £38m.

    World Cup chiefs have moved to clarify the role of television match officials.

    It follow the opening game between England and Fiji, which lasted more than 100 minutes as referee Jaco Peyper referred six incidents to the TMO for closer inspection.

    It led to criticism from those in the game and has forced World Cup bosses to release a statement, which says: "The objective of the television match official system is to ensure accurate and consistent decisions are made on the field in a timely and efficient manner.

    "The TMO is a tool to help referees and assistant referees with their on-field calls and the referee remains the decision-maker who is in charge of the process."

    Sir Alex Ferguson has also been speaking to Sky Sports News this week, and he reveals he once tried to sign Tony Adams for Manchester United.

    "I think Tony Adams was a United player in an Arsenal shirt to be honest with you," Ferguson said. "I thought he'd be absolutely perfect for United. I tried a little bit when he was 19, in the reserves, but no chance."

    Inspired by a Kim Little hat-trick, Scotland escaped from Ajdovscina with a convincing win despite a subdued opening Euro 2017 performance.

    The 25-year-old evaded her marker to chip the Slovenia goalkeeper and give Anna Signeul's side a half-time lead.

    Little scored twice more after the break, twice racing through on goal and rounding the keeper to tap in.

    "It's always nice to score goals for your country, and to get another hat-trick is great. What's important is getting the win," Little said.

    They continue their campaign with an October double header at home to Belarus and away to Macedonia.

    Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro has decided to part company with the club - six weeks after she was criticised by manager Jose Mourinho.    

    Her role was downgraded following a row during the 2-2 draw against Swansea on 8 August.

    Despite requests from the Blues she will not to return to work and is considering her legal position.

    The Football Association is looking into a complaint that Mourinho used abusive or sexist language towards her.

    In case you missed it earlier, former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has confirmed he will play in the inaugural Pakistan Super League in February.

    He will play in the Twenty20 competition alongside compatriots Luke Wright and Tim Bresnan.

    Pietersen said via a video message posted on the league's Facebook page: "Absolutely buzzing to be a part of the Pakistani mela (fair) coming up in February.

    "(I) cannot wait to get started. Looks like it's going to be a wonderful competition, lots of fun, lots of sixes, lots of wickets. Really, really excited to be a part of this wonderful tournament and excited to get going."

    Manchester City's Yaya Toure says he doesn't want to be rested for tonight's tie at the Stadium of Light.

    A tennis fan who woke from an 11-year coma in August thought his family were joking with him when they told him that his favourite player – Roger Federer – was still one of the best on the planet.

    Jesus Aparicio, who was involved in a serious car crash in December 2004, is reported to have said: “When I knew that at 34 years old, he is still playing and is number two in the world, I thought they were kidding me. I could not believe it.

    “When I heard that he reached 17 slam titles, I put my hands on my face. I knew Federer was very good but I never thought he could win all he has won.”

    Sir Alex Ferguson says he only managed four world-class players during his time at Manchester United – Paul Scholes, Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo. 

    So we were asking you which Premier League players were world class. 

    BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty told Sportsday live readers that Ashley Cole was one.

    "Cole was a magnificent left-back and his personal battle with the young Cristiano Ronaldo when England lost in the quarter-final of Euro 2004 in Lisbon's Stadium Of Light was a work of the defensive art and was a privilege to witness in the flesh,” said McNulty. 

    “The fearless Ronaldo ran at Cole all night but time and again Cole was his equal, and on plenty of occasions his better.”

    They begin their 2017 European Championship qualifying campaign in Austria at 1730 BST.

    Chris Coleman's men's side need only a point from their final two Euro 2016 qualifiers to reach next year's finals in France.

    "When our girls watch the men play they can't not be inspired because they are playing very well," Ludlow said.

    Liverpool Ladies boss Matt Beard is to leave the club to become head coach of US National Women's Soccer League side Boston Breakers.

    The 37-year-old has been in charge of Liverpool since August 2012, and guided them to the Women's Super League titles in 2013 and 2014.

    He joins a Breakers side that finished bottom of the US top-flight in 2015.  

    "I feel I have taken the club as far as I can," Beard said.

    Arsenal defender Gabriel's three-match suspension has been withdrawn with immediate effect.

    An appeal by the club was upheld following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing.

    Gabriel was dismissed for violent conduct during the game against Chelsea on Saturday after an altercation with Blues' striker Diego Costa.

    Gabriel is currently subject to a separate FA charge of improper conduct in and has until 18:00 BST on Thursday to respond.
