"We have some great youngsters coming through," he told BBC Radio Leeds.

John Motson believes there is a media conspiracy against Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

Speaking on the Monday Night Club, the commentator said: "Every time I read an article about Liverpool, there's somebody digging away at him.

"If we can put things in perspective, two years ago he nearly won the league."

Liverpool have started the Premier League season with just two wins in their first six games.

So there's a tasty second City derby tonight when Aston Villa take on Birmingham City in the Capital One Cup.

Spare a thought for poor old Peter Enckelman, who as Villa goalkeeper let a throw-in roll under his boot for an own goal when the two sides met in the Premier League in 2002.

England discard Adam Lyth suffered another failure on a generally positive morning for the champions against Sussex at Hove.

Lyth was lbw to Chris Jordan for three, but Gary Ballance (38) and Andrew Gale (31) shared an unbroken stand of 51 before lunch.

Sussex need a maximum of nine points to be certain of playing Division One cricket again next summer, and are one wicket away from their first.

Trescothick continues good formpublished at 13:04

    Somerset 98-2 v Warwickshire

BBC Somerset's Anthony Gibson at Taunton:

"A satisfactory morning for Somerset, which would have been a whole lot better but for a wild heave from Tom Cooper, which left his middle stump lying on the ground off the last ball before lunch.

"Marcus Trescothick is still there on 50, his 11th score of 50 or more in the County Championship this season, and the wicket looks to be as placid as everyone was expecting.

"This was a good toss for Somerset to win, on a blustery, distinctly autumnal day."

Edwards offers hope for Hantspublished at 12:56

    Nottinghamshire 95-3 v Hampshire

BBC Radio Nottingham's Dave Bracegirdle at Trent Bridge:

"Three early wickets for Fidel Edwards more than justified James Vince’s decision to insert the home side on the opening morning of Hampshire’s vital match against Nottinghamshire.

"Scrapping for First Division survival, Hants got off to the perfect start in a must-win match, as Edwards removed Brendan Taylor and he followed that with the wickets of Jake Libby and Samit Patel.

"An unbroken stand of 56 between Steven Mullaney and Riki Wessels turned the session around, though, with Wessels passing 1,000 runs for the season when he reached 20."

The one hard news line to emerge from Farrell's chat with the media is that a decision will be made tomorrow on whether Jonathan Joseph will be fit to face Wales.

Joseph has a chest injury but Farrell played down concerns.

"JJ has a bit of a knock but it’s nothing too serious and our medical team are doing their best to get him fit," he said.

"It’s something and nothing. He has just got a knock on his chest. We’ll know whether he is fit by tomorrow."

He added: "It won’t change the whole dynamic of the selection (if he's missing) because we have a squad that has been training together for a long time now."

England's replacements made a huge impact in the opening game against Fiji, and Sam Burgess received the loudest cheer of the night when he entered the fray.

Tossed a question about Burgess's chances of starting against Wales, Farrell played a straight bat.

"We were confident when we picked the 31-man squad that everyone can do a job for us," Farrell said.

"Everyone in that squad will be comfortbale in the starting 15. We know what we see week in, week out and we back all of them to start in the team."

So, not really answering the question at all then...

England Back's coach Andy Farrell has been speaking to the media ahead of that huge World Cup game at the weekend.

"It’s one of these games that everyone is unbelievably excited about," he says."Everyone worldwide is excited about this one.

"It’s a very difficult pool to play in, we all know that. It is about getting the preparation right and emotionally being in the right place to give the performance of our life at the weekend.

"What will count is that England are playing in white, at Twickenham, in the home dressing room, and we will have a hell of a lot of support on the day – that will count for a lot."
