Rain disrupts Championship programmepublished at 12:18

The start of three games in the final round of Championship fixtures have been delayed by rain. There will be no play before lunch at The Oval, where Surrey need a maximum of 17 points against Northants, to make certain of the Division Two title.

It is a similar story for rivals Lancashire, who are waiting to begin their game against Essex at Chelmsford, and in Division One, the umpires are to carry out a 13:10 BST inspection where relegated Worcestershire's game against Middlesex has yet to get under way.

Two players in Australia's NRL have been taken to hospital following an overdose of pain-killing medication.

The players - Aaron Gray and Dylan Walker - had taken too many of the painkillers they were prescribed after undergoing operations last week, said John Lee, chief executive of their club, the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

He said there was no evidence of illegal drug use by either player.

Somerset fast bowler Alfonso Thomas, who has taken over 550 wickets for the county, will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Cape-Town born Thomas, 38, arrived at Taunton ahead of the 2008 campaign.

In total he played in 91 first class matches scoring 1,852 runs and taking 306 wickets, including a haul of more than 100 in the summer of 2010.

"It's been great fun but like all good things they eventually come to an end," said Thomas.

Agree with Sir Alex Ferguson that Paul Scholes was world class - and England also had another player who undoubtedly deserved that status during the so-called "Golden Generation" era.

Ashley Cole was, for years, deserving of the label world class and was perhaps not fully appreciated a) because of the acrimony towards him following his move from Arsenal to Chelsea and also the unforgiving spotlight on his personal life and b) maybe England supporters simply took him for granted because he was so good so often.

Cole was a magnificent left-back and his personal battle with the young Cristiano Ronaldo when England lost in the quarter-final of Euro 2004 in Lisbon's Stadium Of Light was a work of the defensive art and was a privilege to witness in the flesh.

The fearless Ronaldo ran at Cole all night but time and again Cole was his equal, and on plenty of occasions his better.

And if any further confirmation is needed, just check Cole's honours list.

    'Show your anger'published at 10:56

    Football

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed how he likes watching the pre-match news conferences and how he sometimes gives advice to managers facing the cameras, including to Leicester manager Nigel Pearson when City were struggling to avoid relegation from the Premier League last season.

    gImage source, Getty Images

"I felt he was a little bit too casual," said Ferguson. "I said 'Your team is bottom of the league and you have to show your anger a little bit. The fans want to see you care.'

"He improved after that and so did his team. He did a great job."

Leicester avoided relegation but Pearson was sacked in the close season.
