Getting my skates on...published at 18:29

That's everything from Sportsday today, but I'll leave you with a charming tale about fans of the Quebec Nordiques, a Canadian NHL franchise that was relocated to Colorado in the United States 20 years ago.

Their long-suffering supporters now have a shiny new stadium in which to enjoy their national sport. The only problem? Until the league awards the city a new franchise they still don't have a team to play there.

Watch the video of their story here.

We're back on Monday from 08:00 BST. Until then...

Sierra Leonean athlete 'fears homelessness'published at 18:10

    Athletics

A Sierra Leonean athlete refused the right to stay in the UK has told the BBC he fears he will end up homeless if he returns to the African country after his family was wiped out by Ebola.

Jimmy Thoronka, 21, went missing after last year's Glasgow Commonwealth Games and was found sleeping rough in London. He applied to stay in the UK, but the Home Office rejected his application.

Now he says he fears detention or being forced back onto the streets if he returns to Sierra Leone.

"I have no family, no house," he said. "The people I was living with have passed away from Ebola... I would be homeless."

Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq will coach Afghanistan for their upcoming limited-overs tour of Zimbabwe on October 16.

The 45-year-old, who retired in 2007, said the country has "fighting cricketers" and that he is looking forward to improving their batting.

However he has turned down a long-term contract, saying: "I don't have experience of coaching an international team. That's the reason I wanted to first see how it goes with Afghanistan.''

'You've got to keep your eye on the kit men'published at 17:38

Everton v Liverpool, Sun 4 Oct, 13:30 BST

Everton boss Roberto Martinez was his usual calm and collected self at today's news conference. Even the players are not getting carried away ahead of the derby this Sunday. The backroom staff? Not so much.

He said: "The kit men are the ones you have to keep an eye on, they're the ones who get really excited. In terms of the players, they're very much focused and aware how important the game is and how difficult the opposition will be on the day."

Martinez also mentioned that it will be a late call on the inclusion of John Stones and Seamus Coleman.

Anyone who saw Japan overturn South Africa in their opening World Cup game will know that squad has an engine that just won't quit. And for record caps holder Hitoshi Ono that engine appears to be fuelled by beer - lots of beer.

Coach Eddie Jones joked that the secret to the 37-year-old's longevity is plenty of milk and 10 pints of beer a night.

Ono is set to earn his 96th cap for Japan against Samoa on Saturday, and Jones said: "If you want a strong child make sure they get brought up on a dairy farm, deliver the papers every morning, drink 10 beers a night. He's an incredibly tough player and that is why he is picked."

Big praise for Smallingpublished at 17:28

    Chris SmallingImage source, AFP

Louis van Gaal singled out Chris Smalling for praise in his news conference earlier.

The defender scored against Wolfsburg in the Champions League and has been an assured presence at the back for Manchester United so far this season - something that has not gone unnoticed.

Van Gaal said: “I think the player, when he does things, he does it all by himself. I help him with advice and also with demands, also with training sessions, also with showing images to improve him, but he has to be open and he has to perform on the pitch. He does everything for himself. The greatest compliment you have to make is to Chris and not to me.”

    McNulty Q&Apublished at 17:17

    #bbcsportsday

BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty has been conducting a question and answer session for Sportsday live readers today. Here's his final question...

@A96oye asks on Twitter: Do you think Rangers and Celtic will ever play in England?

Phil answers: No I don't. Don't forget Rangers are not even in Scotland's top division at the moment, so why would they be allowed to play in England, even if they wanted to?

And where would they start? Would they just expect to be parachuted into the Premier League? Who would they replace? Complete non-starter and rightly so.

Ashley-Cooper tackles Cipriani remarkpublished at 17:13

    Rugby World Cup

This one could be heating up quite nicely, if you're into off-the-pitch banter.

Australia's Adam Ashley-Cooper has had a cheeky dig at Danny Cipriani after the former England fly-half said no one in the Wallabies team, external would make it into Stuart Lancaster's squad.

Ashley-Cooper fired back: "It's just nice that Danny is talking about someone other than himself. He's a good bloke and I enjoy his selfies a lot. He can say what he likes, he wouldn't ever be a part of our team."
