Another calm performance from the Liverpool manager even in the face of more difficult questions. He was insistent that his side are improving and are beginning to create more clear-cut chances. He was also quick to remark on the differing expectations between the red half and blue half of the city.

The two clubs are separated by a point in the table. Rodgers joked, "they have had a fantastic start and we have had a disaster!"

Rodgers does, however, know that defeat on Sunday, will prompt more criticism and 'hysteria', a victory though will add to his view that things perhaps aren't as bad as they are being made to look.

So, a calm and collected Roberto Martinez this morning ahead of the biggest game on Everton's domestic football fixture list.

Newport County have appointed John Sheridan as their new manager.

He replaces Terry Butcher, who left his role on Thursday.

Sheridan departed Plymouth at the end of last season after guiding them to the play-offs and will be in charge of the team for Saturday’s match against Exeter after taking the position on a short-term basis.

The Liverpool boss has bemoaned his team getting punished for little defensive mistakes, according to PA. He is also reported as saying he "respects and understands" the booing from certain supporters.

Brendan Rodgers has been addressing the pressure he has been under going into the derby. PA reports him as saying: "We are back into that flow of creating chances. We go there with confidence. There is no greater pressure than what I've had before. We are five points off the top. The players and I are very calm."

According to Press Association reporter Jim van Wijk, things seem to be getting a bit tense at the Arsenal news conference when manager Arsene Wenger is asked about remarks made by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho...

The thrill of the derby is not lost on Martinez, even if that first victory remains elusive.

He says: "I know how important it is to get a victory - you only have to speak to the fans… but the only thing that matters at this stage is to get three points to take a promising start into an exciting start.

"The derby is a fixture that we want to give our fans really a sense of satisfaction."

The Everton boss has given his thoughts on the scrutiny Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers finds himself under, saying that pressure has become the name of the game. 

He adds: "We’ve created so many high expectations that it’s something that is normal. If you win a game, you’re looking forward to the next. If you don’t you’re under pressure and we accept that."

Martinez confirms everyone from West Brom came through without injury and he expects Steven Pienaar, Leighton Baines and Tony Hibbert to step up their recoveries so they will be ready after the international break.

Also some praise for newly-fit Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge: “In any squad you’ve got players that can bring that edge and I think Sturridge is one of those."

Martinez now stressing the importance of a team effort, rather than relying solely on Romelu Lukaku: "Romelu is a striker who can bring you that final moment which is of course important but... if we don't perform well as a team we won't win football games."

"I don’t think being favourites matters a lot, it’s about what happens in the 90 minutes and what we can create as an atmosphere at Goodison.

"If you’re looking at the amount of money Liverpool have spent in the past few seasons they have to be favourites but I don’t think we can take too much into the game. It’s a very important game because we’re coming from an away win… but we know it’s a derby and it doesn’t matter what kind of form you’re in."
