    Classic manager tactics now.

It's pointed out by a journo that Everton's last home win was on 21 November.

"We don't want to look back, we want to look forward," says Martinez, boss code for 'cheers pal for pointing that out, it's a bit of an embarrassing stat and I really don't want to be talking about it'.

Martinez does say a bit more though, adding: "It is true that our points return at home hasn’t been good enough and we need to work on that.

"We have a really important period of games now. The cups have been a welcome distraction but we now have three very important league games in a short space of time."

Next comes the obligatory question about the imminent arrival of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

"Pep is one of the best managers in world football and it will be fantastic for the league to have him," responds Martinez.

"He will bring a very successful football philosophy and he is going to bring a completely different tactical approach to the British game.

"I know exactly what he is like as a person. He is a winner and he has an attention to detail.

"But now is the time to be respectful to Manuel Pellegrini, who is fighting for a trophy on every front."

More on new arrival Oumar Niasse.

"He can cope with the physical nature of the Premier League," Martinez explains.

"The last game in Russian league was 10 December – that was when their winter beak started – so the first thing is to get him back to full fitness.

"But he is really intelligent and he has a lot of assists. He is a striker who can fit in different formations.

"He is quite flexible in the way that he plays, and at the age of 25, it is the perfect moment for him to arrive in the Premier League."

The Toffees chief has arrived and is immediately asked about deadline day signing Oumar Niasse, bought from Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow in a £13.5m deal.

"He had a real desire to join us and we moved quickly to do it," says Martinez.

"He has been successful in two European leagues and he is going to bring something different. He has incredible hunger and he will fit into our dressing room."

Is he back-up for Romelu Lukaku, a reporter asks?

"He is not back up. He has his own ability and he is someone who can stretch a defence," says the boss.

Sid Dodia: Seriously, happy for Man Utd. No signing, no waste of money, from next season the new manager will take care of it, to Mourinho.

John Soya: Brentford FC has still got a few players left they haven't sold. Down to the bare 11 will do.

Ste Dickinson: Disappointed Liverpool didn't sign Teixeira or a decent centre-back but we never sign anyone in January.

"Andy Murray arrived back in the UK from Melbourne no closer to cracking the code required to defeat Novak Djokovic in a Grand Slam.

The world number two played some outstanding tennis in the second and third sets of the Australian Open final. And yet he still left the court with nothing to show for it, and without a win over the Serb at this level since the 2013 Wimbledon final."

Is there anything David Beckham can't do?

The England and Man United legend stopped with tea and coffee for a paramedic treating an elderly man who had fallen on a London street.

Catherine Maynard said she had been waiting for an ambulance with the man when Beckham walked past, before returning 10 minutes later with hot beverages for the pair.

Maynard told the Evening Standard: "All of a sudden, I looked up and saw someone who looked like David Beckham walking past us. He said hello and got in his car.

"I said to the man I was treating, 'I think that was David Beckham.' Ten minutes later, he came back with a cup of coffee for me and a tea for the patient."

    What a guy.

    England rugby latest

The announcement about Steve McNamara comes almost three months after the coach guided England to a 2-1 victory over the world number one-ranked Kiwis, the national team's first series triumph for eight years.

His departure paves the way for the appointment of veteran Australian Wayne Bennett as the new England head coach.

Bennett, who turned 66 on New Year's Day, is widely acknowledged as the leading coach in the sport following his unrivalled success in Australia, where he guided Brisbane and St George Illawarra to seven Grand-Final triumphs.

He has twice coached Australia and was right-hand man to Stephen Kearney, his current assistant at the Broncos, when New Zealand won the 2008 World Cup.
